Square Enix’s Cursed Platformer Hexes DSiWare

imageNanashi no Game: Me, a sequel to Square Enix’s horror series inspired by The Ring, includes a menacing cursed platformer. See all of those guillotine blades?

The cursed 8-bit platformer and cursed RPG are a key part of the DS game, but you don’t need to survive Nanashi no Game: Me to experience the retro games, if you own a Nintendo DSi.

Square Enix is releasing two cursed game packs as DSiWare downloads in Japan. Extreme Misfortunate Side Scrolling Action Vol 1. Cursed Game: Blood and Vol 2. Cursed Game: Prison will be available on September 9. Each volume costs 500 DSiWare points or $5.

I haven’t played enough of Nanashi no Game: Me yet to determine if these are new level packs or rehashes, but the character sprite is different from the one in the DS game. Look for more coverage of Nanashi no Game: Me (The Game Without a Name: The Eye) next week.

Namco and SNK need to follow suit with their nuRetro subgames. I want Star Radish and Demon Returns on DSiWare asap.

Square Enix oughtta bring those bad boys over here! Maybe they'll be able to gauge interest in the source material that way?
  • I hope they cursed platformer over here. It wouldn't have much competition in the download space, it doesn't require translating, and like you said it could gauge interest in Nanashi no Game.

yeah, that would be a good strategy. I hope they do it and then release the two DS games. Lately SE seems to be holding back a lot of DS games (this, the two chocobo games, and sigma harmonic [yeah I know it sucks, but I had to list it here])

edit: there is also DQ IX (but it seems likely to make it over) and Blood of Bahamut. But these two were released not to long ago in Japan so SE may just be taking their time... either way, the amount of DS games they are holding back from localization is making me worry a bit. :(

Wish they would translate the original games instead :0. I dunno if it's worth it as a stand-alone game, looks just like another generic old-school platformer that way :/
  • It should be very challenging if it's anything like what appeared in the game. It has a puzzle element to it, too. There were a few parts where I had to pause for a bit and plan my next 6 movies so I can avoid not only the falling platforms, but the falling guillotines as well. I've died over 230 times! :D
It's definitely one of the highlights of the game for me. Once I finish the game I'd love to go back and play this part and show my friends.

    What is a "cursed" game?
  • Ever see the Ring? Imagine a video game instead of a video tape. That's the premise of Nanashi no Game from Square Enix. So, in that game you play through a "cursed" 8-bit RPG similar to Final Fantasy and a "cursed" platformer which is something like Super Mario Brothers. These are games within a game

Square Enix released the cursed mini-games, which were part of Nanashi no Game, as separate DSiWare titles.
