Square Enix is all aboard Sony’s PSP digital comics plan. They plan to release four of their manga series on the PlayStation Store this December.

Gangan Comics, Square Enix’s manga publishing division, handles titles such as: Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Bamboo Blade, When Cicadas Cry, and Kingdom Hearts in Japan. Specific titles were not announced, but it looks like Fullmetal Alchemist is in the bag.

I can’t speak for everyone here, but I can safely say this is just *not* the way to read comics.

    • I agree. As somebody who reads scanlated manga, it just doesn’t feel the same as it would with an actual book copy.

      It’s neat idea though btw.

I started reading comics before I started reading any actual books when I was little. So when I say that I’m a traditionalist in this sense, you know it comes from the heart.

        • I like hard copies too, but this is Japan, many people read manga on their phones now.

Scrolling, zooming, and moving the cursor, this is not like Amazon’s Kindle for books you know.. I tried reading “Claymore” on the PSP once, took me like forever to read a page, lol.. Plus they would be way overpriced anyway, a tankoubon is 400 yen on average now, of course bookstores still charge around $6.50 + tax. Still buying them in chapters to read on a small screen is just not viable at all.

Still, I kind of want all my manga to be digitalized.. the piles/cupboards of books that I have scare even me (I still have a lot of weekly shounen jump phone books from way back..)… No wonder Jpn people just sell their manga to Bookoff for like 50cents once they’re done w/ it..

Also, they should do this to new manga, not existing manga that is already in book form. The DS reader thing was even more stupid and left on the wayside, who wants to pay more to read old manga in low res anyway.

          • Yeah, I’ve tried to read manga on my PSP too, if they do release manga, I hope it’s not manga scans, but a “game” that has manga and a specialized viewer or sorts..
