PSP Digital Download Prices Compared

By Spencer . October 1, 2009 . 7:18pm

image Sony released a slew of UMD games as digital downloads on the PlayStation Store for new PSPgo purchasers. How do those prices stack up against retail versions? We found out.

We took Sony’s list from the PlayStation Blog and compared their prices to a brand new copy purchased from Amazon.

New releases like Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny, Gran Turismo, Madden NFL 10, and Beaterator were a few dollars cheaper at Amazon. However, there were some games where Sony beat retail like Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce, MLB 09 The Show, and The Sims 2: Pets – which is on sale at Amazon for $82.29.

Seriously, it costs $82.29 for a sealed The Sims 2: Pets. And that’s because the game is out of print, which means never been played copies are hard to come by. Used prices for The Sims 2: Pets and other games are much less.

Here’s a detailed chart with the all of the titles covered. Differences marked in parentheses highlight games cheaper at the PlayStation Store and indicate how much you save by purchasing a game from Sony instead of Amazon.

Oh, this is an excellent article. It’s nice to see the numbers standing in comparison with each other. It seems the greater/less than totals are actually pretty close to being equal, far moreso than I thought they would be.

Prinny is an excellent catch for those of you who haven’t played it before. Especially at that price!

  • JeremyR

I think that’s a little unfair though, comparing prices of 3rd party sellers on Amazon.

A lot of times they jack up the prices on stuff even that’s in print. A fairer comparison would be looking at the used prices on ebay. (Since all you care about is the software, not the “newness” of it)

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

SCEA’s pricing parity is based on the MSRP new software though, which is why we went with new prices instead of used ones.

    • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

I look through a lot of games on eBay from old to new and I’m not sure about getting anything really accurate down from that.
If you were to actually chart the selling price it would go up and down like the Himalayas. Not to mention Buy It Now, and shipping, taxes and starting prices that vary in itself. It can change on a weekly basis.
Even if you were average it out I’d imagine there would be a pretty huge gap.

  • Divals

Prinny costs almost $60 on Amazon? Damn, I’m glad I bought it when it came out. I got it with a Prinny plushie and it still cost less than that.

    • M’iau M’iaut

New copies with the whole special package should still be findable through gamestops for regular retail….funny how atlus and nis seem to be the ones most aware of making some adjustments for digital product.

Perhaps it’s because they’ve both been a bit ahead of the curve on selling through the internets and know that with much of their clientele, making a dl title available for $10-20 won’t necessarily lose them sales for more expensive physical copies with all the swag attached. They just increase the potential numbers of the faithful.

  • Guest

hmmm i just noticed that the down side of digital games…you cant pre-prder meaning theres no such thing as little goodies such as plushies and sound tracks and other stuff =(

    • squalldane

I’m sure as the PSPGo catches on, as long as you pre-order the digital copy, you can still get the extras

    • ShinGundam

Maybe they will use Box With PSN Voucher Code for Pre-order bonus

  • Advent_Andaryu

Great article! I love charts like these, especially when it comes to games. I’d like to see other game price comparisons, not just PSP.

I agree with JeremyR, I don’t think it should be compared to Amazon alone, mix in some Gamestop and Ebay prices just to see the difference.

  • ElTopo

You cant go off of Amazon prices, at least not all of them. When Amazon doesn’t have something, it gets sold to you from an outside source and these sources just seem to make up prices to price gouge stupid consumers. I saw a book the other day on fencing for 999$. Seriously. Also games are frequently 80-90$ when you could buy them in any store for around 10-20$.

Second, why not compare these to used game prices? Which would be half of digital prices. Why call digital “new” anyways? Without a physical product there is no sense in giving it a state of condition and since most of these are old games, compare it to old used games sales or at least both.

Good idea on the article however. I still can’t believe people are buying into this garbage system. I mean who can’t wait for single priced games sold directly from publishers and not being able to sell or put a value to your collection? For that matter collecting video games is pretty much out of the window as well. This whole system and trend is so off the wall stupid on so many levels it astounds me that there’s people who want this to be THE path video games take.

Is Blade Dancer so cheap ($5) because it’s such a bad game?

Not to be picky, but while GoW COO is $5.25, it’s actually from a marketplace seller w/ $7.99 shipping, while Amazon’s price is $19.49.

I guess digital is good for some old and rare games if you don’t feel like hunting for a possible cheaper used copy.

Game prices aside, the PSP Go’s color is another no go, black for fingerprint and smudges, and I heard the white is not ceramic but sparkly, like the ice silver..

    • Ereek

The NIS games are so cheap because they’re temporarily on sale. They’re at 50% off or more for the week.

      • Aoshi00

Oh… I was wondering why Disgaea, Dragoneer’s Aria, and Badman have such good deals, still that makes Blade Dancer only $10 if not on sale. I might pick up Badman for 9.99 (then again maybe not since I sucked playing the demo). If Half-minute hero is sold digitally for $10, I would forgo a physical copy..

        • http://www.younganimal.com/berserk Mr_Qoo

I actually bought Blade Dancer on Ebay a few months back for about $8.00 I’m hoping this doesn’t speak for how good it is (not that I’ll EVER get around to plaing it!)

        • daizyujin

If you sucked at the demo, you may want to skip it. The demo is tame in difficulty compared the rest of the game. It can get quite frustrating.

  • maxchain

Heck, you’ve sold me on whatever Blade Dancer is, just because it’s cheaper than half of the new PSP Minis.

    • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

I’ve never even heard of it till now. I guess the upside to digital distribution is breathing new life to games that fall off the radar.

    • Ereek

Honestly, I’d get Dragoneers Aria instead. Both aren’t amazing games, but Blade Dancer is the worst of the bunch.

Still, at that price I don’t see why you shouldn’t get them.

  • squalldane

Where are the Square*Enix games? Do they not have any games on UMD and PSN?

    • daizyujin

It seems Square-Enix likes to wait a bit on new digital distro formats. I remember it took a good long while before they did any games on the Virtual Console.

      • tim_mbp

Or they might be waiting for a global launch once the Go lands in Japan on Nov. 1.

  • Hero_of_Hyrule

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus is $24.99 on PSN, not $29.99

    and Dragoneer’s Aria is $14.99 not $19.99

  • http://albotas.com/ brownkidd

That’s crazy. I wonder what the difference is when compared to used prices at brick & mortar stores.

  • markodj

Great piece. An interesting take on this is that in Canada, nearly most of the games available are cheaper to download from the store than to buy it online. For example, Beaterator and Persona are both 49.99 at my local GameStop, but are 39.99 on the PSN Store.

The reason is that the PSN store still sells their games at 1:1 with the US price while Cdn stores adjust due to the USD/CDN exchange rate.

  • Juggularity

I don’t shop for games at Amazon because the couple of times the game cost less than the shipping.

I’d like to see a comparison between the GameStop used prices and the PSN prices because, for me, that’s where the competition is.

  • daizyujin

Though there will always be the point that MSRP is not an indication of what a person will have to pay for a game. I see a lot of these titles on the clearance rack at Target for even less.
