Meet Final Fantasy XIII’s Bahamut

Since Final Fantasy XIII is a Final Fantasy title you know Bahamut is going to be in it. But, he’s not a dragon in this game…

Bahamut is a dragon human hybrid, as revealed in Shonen Jump. Perhaps, a draconian? Fang, a new female character, has the iconic eidolon as a summon. Bahamut’s drive mode hasn’t been revealed yet so he might transform into a fighter jet. If Shiva can morph into a motorcycle, anything is possible, but a more likely possibility is Fang riding Bahamut in dragon form while firing Megaflare blasts.

    Please don't transform, Please don't transform…

I find the transforming summons horrible. Who would want that? “I got an idea, lets rape the summons and make them transformers! Have you seen that Michael Bay movie? It'll be incredible!”

    I can't lose Bahamut too.

  • shion16

    well….i didnt like it

  • vrakanox

Now all we need is a badass male character. Square always saves the best for last.

  • nyobzoo

    Bahamut looks horrible

  • kazalt

He looks like one of those horrible Power Rangers creatures.

Rita Rupula: “GET THOSE RANGERS, BAHAMUT!”

    Bahamut: “Yes master!”

    Rangers: “Megazord, lets go!”

  • DudeOnly

i don't see anything wrong with bahamut

  • kazalt

He has carrots for fingers, for one.

  • Saint_Tibulus

That is some hideous design right there

  • DudeOnly

lol well they could made him better

  • Saturnus

    cool

is that a screenshot for ingame? doesn't look like the others… (As in quality)

  • cowcow

    Yes it is.

And that Bahamut design looks similar to the Odin design in Agito XIII in terms of style and color palette

  • thebanditking

The summons thing is strange for sure but those transformer movies were conplete trash, infact mindless gutter trash to be precise. Sorry you bought it up though ;).

BORING. Honestly I think they need to think about what direction they are going with this, because I'm conflicted between thinking that they were going so totally over the top, what with Shiva being a sexy motorcycle! But then with Bahamut and Odin, they aren't anything special, hell they are even what I'd consider stale and boring. rar, like seriously make up your mind square, quit jerking me around! I had brief hope for a truly over the top badass FF, then you throw it out the window!

  • Advent_Andaryu

Yeah I don't like the design, but I won't fully judge it until I see a bit more. I love the transformation idea, it adds depth to summons that hasn't been done since FFX.

  • kazalt

They had it good in FFXI, to be honest. I don't know why they would decide to make them transformers. I'm not saying things should stay stagnant, but transformations?

  • Vanilla

Great, now Bahamut looks like some random deformed monster. I'm feeling a tad annoyed. I wonder what he's going to turn into?

I personally love the idea of transforming summons, but I always feel like they just started off with the Odin/horse idea and then decided to apply it to everything else. At least with the horse it…well, made sense, since Odin has a horse. But then you've got a motorcycle and a racecar (neither of which I like nor dislike) and then it turns into an oddly generic trend where people end up saying, “Okay, cool. Why do we need this again?” I'm a bit afraid to see what they do with the rest of them.

  • kazalt

It's the technology part that gets me, honestly. I don't mind the idea of transformations per se, but to make shiva a motorcycle? Retarded. I'll change my mind, of course, if it ends up being part of the story, but going off of what we know now, it's horrible.

  • http://www.genkaibreak.com Code

This. That is exactly my first thought, he looks like your average run of the mill monster rather then a badass freakin' god of dragons. Maybe Ifrit turns into a grenade launcher +o+

  • http://www.genkaibreak.com Code

wait a minute… I'm confused does two women who combine into a motorcycle even count as technology?

  • Aoshi00

Cool, Fang's her name huh, the l'Cie who seemingly works for the Sanctum that shows up at the end of the TGS 09 trailer w/ Snow.

I don't get all the constant FF XIII bashing even before the game comes out, I guess it's uncool to like a mainstream title. Alrdy have the game pre-ordered (set me back $88.80), every time they revealed something nice gets me excited. Frankly I don't dislike the mechanical summons at all, I'm not playing the game for the summons anyway.

  • kazalt

I'm not bashing FFXIII because it's the cool thing to do, I'm bashing the summons for being lame. I actually WANT to play FFXIII, it's just that the summon thing is irritating. I've used a summoner or caller in whatever form they come in every Final Fantasy game I've been able to (aside from FFXI, but that's because I don't like healing in MMORPGs[this was before summoners were allowed to be DD]). I'm a huge fan of the summoning and everything that goes with it.

I'm sorry, but there are some things that I do not think need to be messed with, one of them being the summons.

  • Cloud_ST

    BAHAMUTOOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOO!.

  • moriken

Yeah, carrots are good for your eyes!

  • ElTopo

I think that was sarcasm on his part.

  • ElTopo

You gotta give them a little room to experiment I mean cmon, this is number 13, it can't just be the same old re-hashed crap every time. Yeah its different but the games not out, no ones played it; you could at least give it a chance. At least they are trying to bring a little something different to an incredibly stagnant series.

  • ElTopo

The summons seem more or less the same, except for the new Drive Mode which turns them into big transformations. Not that big of a deal, and hell it might fit into the story.

  • ShinGundam

Actually I like Transformation it fit Futuristic setting and without
It may end up like same **** that you have played last 20 year
Remind you the problem with traditional Summons is that if they
are too weak, eventually no one uses them anymore But if one
character related with 1 summon that has 2 modes you clearly
will use Transformation to make more use for them unlike Traditional

  • Mr_Qoo

Oh, sweet irony. I'll say this every day for the rest of my life online, I'm sure. People bash Final Fantasy for it being what it was suppose to be from the start: Keep some basic themes and iconic characters/symbolism and make changes to the mechanics here and there creating something new, or taking a different approach. So many people are fans of one or two of the games and hate the rest. It's an everchanging series all, so get over yourselves. You'd think by the XIIIth installment, not including a plethora of gaiden-esque games and spin-offs, people would stop complaining about “change,” as if it's new for FF. I think S-E spoiled the fanboys/girls when they started making a sequel to any of their games. Money is a great thing, no? =

  • Nika

Hmmm, I hoped it would be a dragon again. Pity, but ah well.

  • kazalt

I'm not against change, I'm against dumb ideas. What would you say if SE decided it was time to add Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z, who would narrate your fights and would eventually give you the powers of the saiyans to stop the villan? It'd be stupid, right? Well, that's how I feel about transforming summons. If the transforming summons are part of the story, like I said above, I'll drop it.

If I didn't like change, I wouldn't be sporting a FFT sprite as my avatar.

  • Mr_Qoo

Well, I was actually referring to Aoshi’s comment about why people always hate on FF in general, not particularly your posts. Though, your example is completely off base. I’d reserve that for something more along the lines of, say, Kingdom Hearts. Summons can barely keep that particular “title” in the series. Does anyone remember Ark from FFIX? He was a giant air-ship with a dragonhead that, well, transformed into a robot and pummeled enemies. I think it was even the best Eidolon in the game? I just think people take some of the changes and blow them out of proportion. I understand your gripes though, especially since summoning in general is so near and dear to your heart and you’re completely entitled to your own opinion. Like I said, my original post wasn’t trying to trash your comments in particular. I was just giving Aoshi my opinion of why there are a lot of FF haters out there. Most of their main points are always about how it’s not the last game. I’m sure you’ve seen it too.

Isn’t that “Affirming the consequent,” there? I get you, though.

  • Advent_Andaryu

XI summons are nice, but it's an MMO. They tried that approach in XII, IMO worst summon system ever.

Summons in X were so great because you could take control of them… I'm think XIII will feel the same way. Not just have them float next to you, but allow you to interact with them.

  • Aoshi00

If you look at the videos, it has all those commands like Sabin's Blitz from FFVI, I think that's the idea, different btn combination for different moves.

  • Aoshi00

Definitely, some people think “no changes at all” is good, like Dragon Quest, but some would say it's the same thing over and over. And when FF tries something new, people say it's not the same anymore. So Ifrit is this minotaur-like giant that throws fireball and lifts the earth and Shiva an ice goddess (even in Blood of Bahamut DS game), is it fun to keep seeing them reappear in every game in the same form? Frankly it's kind of boring. I still think they have kept the essence of the summons, like Odin's still a half man/horse, etc. And the control seems cool enough, like you enter commans like Sabin's Blitz or Auron's Overdrive from what I can tell.

Even Chocobo, it's always the same big bird. And this time we have a chocobo chick living in Sazh's afro nest, it's cute and refreshing :)

I like the fact that every FF game has a new twist on the same summons, but I'm a bit skeptical about these…

On the surface, this this game seems like a hybrid of FFVII and FFX/X-2 with a dash of FFVII tossed in. Tetsuya Nomura 's art design and direction are too heavily steeped the same themes: advanced-technology, cell phones, motorcycles, Asian high-fashion, j-rock, androgynous characters, extreme action camera angles, sappy/shallow love stories, templated heroes/villians … his style is so caricatured that he is little better than Itagaki in this regard.

Square-Enix has plenty of talented people such as Hiroyuki Ito, Hiromichi Tanaka, Hiroshi Minagawa, and Akihiko Yoshida who can (and should) take control of any future FF games while Nomura can devote his time to the KH series and any further remakes/spinoffs of FFVII (and now XIII)

Don't get me wrong, I have no doubt that FFXIII will be a decent game, but my real interest is in FFXIV.
