Square Enix’s Final PlayStation 2 Game

By Spencer . October 15, 2009 . 11:39am

Square Enix’s Final PlayStation 2 GameAll good things come to an end, including PlayStation 2 support. Before that curtain completely closes Square Enix will release one more game.

In Japan, Final Fantasy XI: Vana’diel Collection 2 will be released on three platforms: Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 2. The international equivalent, Final Fantasy XI: Ultimate Collection, is only available for the Xbox 360 and PC in North America.

Must be rough for PlayStation 2 distribution these days if Square Enix passed on releasing a Final Fantasy XI compilation disc. The content is already complete and we got last year’s Final Fantasy XI: Vana’diel Collection.

I hope the PlayStation 2 version of Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love will find retail shelf space…

It's kinda sad that the final Squenix game on PS2 is a MMO. It would have been cool if it were some sort of FF13 spinoff or something like that.

Wait, they're not bringing that out over here for the PS2? That sucks. I know you can download the mini expansions on the ps2 already, but this sets a precedent for them cutting off NA ps2 support, and I don't like it.

Even if they did bring it over here, most retailers wouldn't stock it. I haven't seen anywhere besides Gamestop have actual good PS2 games in stock for a while. Most stores like Best Buy just have shovelware crap. And yes, I'm also worried about Sakura Wars having enough space on store shelves…

My local Wal-Mart is starting to put PS2 accessories on clearance. Dual Shocks for $15, double memory card packs for $24. The end really is nigh.

  • kazalt

The end is always the best time to buy stuff on the cheap. I bought 4 memory cards for the ps1 for 5 bucks brand new years ago. Hell, with this economy, the end couldn't come fast enough!

recap time! Square Enix PS2 titles that never left Japan:

some notable international releases (KH, KH 2, FFX-2, FFXII)

    Dragon Quest V
    DQ+FF Itadaki Street Special
    Dragon Quest Yangus

    Hanjuku Hero vs 3D
    Hanjuku Hero IV
    Front Mission 5
    Front Mission Online

    Fullmetal Alchemist 3
    Fullmetal Alchemist: Dream Carnival

    All Star Pro-Wrestling III
    Heavy Metal Thunder
    Code Age Commanders

wish we had gotten at least one of the Hanjuku Heroes and Dragon Quest Yangus. There was Front Mission 5 fan patch, but an official release would've been really nice.

Ah, the PS2 truly is a great system and it's remarkable that it has had such a long life.
I just got my PS2 back today (long, sad story of where it was) and I couldn't be happier.
Shame that we won't be seeing this FFXI compilation on the PS2 in NA, but I can understand why not from a retail standpoint.

  • kazalt

Yeah, the smart move is to not sell it over here, since the Ps2 version of FFXI wasn't too widely well received here.

And damn right the ps2 was a great system. There were so many great games that I've wanted to get. Unfortunately, I'm a lazy bum, and never got anything for it, and my ps2 is now a dvd player/Final Fantasy Tactics slave. Occasionally GTA3 gets played too.

I have to say the PS2 is/was one of the best consoles I've ever had to play on, at that time I thought Sony had it in the bag. Then came along nintendo with two platforms that did slightly better than the gamecube :)
I'm still trudging my way through Metal Saga, Okage, Suikoden III, Stella Deus, Wild Arms 5 on PS2 though and it still gets my support.

Like Male86 said though, shame it was an MMO. I'll never buy it, should have been something more accessible and fun.

I've got a nasty feeling we'll be at the mercy of Amazon and the like for Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love. But that's beside the point.

Not sure why Square didn't release them, maybe Square doesn't think of the American/European gamers?

I was surprised we didn't at least get the FMA games, but I guess the previous ones didn't sell all that great in spite of how popular the series is.
