Storage Space Friendly Slim PS3 Arrives On November 3

imageSony Computer Entertainment America will release a 250GB PlayStation 3 next month. This model will retail for $349.99, $50 over the current 120GB slim PS3.

For an extra $50 you get over twice the amount of storage space. Don’t feel too bad if you already bought a PS3. Switching the hard drive is a piece of cake.

So far, only one 250GB PlayStation 3 has been announced in Japan and it’s the one with Lightning stamped on it.

Nice, if I do ever need to get a slim in the future, it's nice to know I don't know to switch HDD right away. If you plan to d/l demos, videos, and many games need installs, 120 gb is nothing. I know it's cheap to get a separate HDD for the PS3 though, but it's nice to know there's a decent size HDD right out of the box. 360 is going to have one w/ the Modern Warfare 2 bundle, but I hate the design of that system. If the HDD does get sold separately, I hope it wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

The thing about waiting to switch the HDD is that the Backup Utility for the PS3 is a little weird. It creates a lump file of everything on the HDD, without an option to isolate specific sections, like say, save data only. And after that, the Backup File is only compatible with the same physical unit that it was created from. In my opinion, it's best to switch the HDD as soon as possible so you don't have to delete as much built-up media to fit into your backup drive and then have to try to remember what data to download again.
  • Well this might be when I take the plunge. Not to mention I already own Demon's Souls.
