New Lufia Game Coming Care Of Square Enix

By Spencer . November 12, 2009 . 9:51am

Square Enix is planning a Lufia revival with Estpolis: The Lands Cursed by the Gods. Estpolis is the Japanese name for the Lufia series. Famitsu reports the original Lufia staff has been summoned to develop the new work.

How did Square Enix get Lufia? The series is a Taito property and Square Enix acquired Taito.

More details about the game and probably the platform will be announced in next week’s issue of Famitsu. Since Famitsu is a teasing a reveal Estpolis: The Lands Cursed by the Gods seems bigger than a cell phone game.

  • I’m dubbing today, “Great News Day!” This is excellent. The best part is that they’re going to bring back the same team.

    • speedstersonic

I am in totally agree! Lufia is one of the greatest RPG series ever!

  • Hopefully, they get Yasunori Shiono to compose the music again. One of the best things about Lufia was its music.

    • fallen

My first thoughts as well. Especially since he hasn’t been up to anything recently. Lufia without Shiono would be like Seiken Densetsu without Kikuta. ……>_>

  • Code

rar, holy crap I never even thought of this, durr I knew Taito did Lufia series, and I knew Taito was bought by SquareEnix, but I just didn’t put two and two together. Man, Lufia 2 was such a great game.

  • You know what’s funny about this? I was just thinking to myself today; “I wonder if they’ll ever make a new Lufia game?… Oh well, might as well play Lufia II” So I did. And now I read this awesome news!

  • Nabe

One of my most favorite childhood RPGs getting a sequel? YES! Much love Square-Enix!

  • MadMirko

    Don’t forget to make it 2D! :,(

  • Tokyo Guy

Lufia…I think the GBC and GBA games basically killed the series. Hopefully Square won’t turn the game into a hack-job 3-D mess like with Seiken Densetsu 4 (is anyone else still disappointed that game was such a failure?)

  • kupomogli

Lufia gets so much praise, but the reason I think is solely because of how good a game Lufia 2 is(Lufia 2 is one of the better SNES RPGs.) The original Lufia is the king of slow battle systems in RPGs, yet if it was sped up inbetween character and enemy turns, the game would actually be decent. Insanely slow battle system paired with a high encounter rate really doesn’t make the game much fun.

  • YES

    • My enthusiasm was curbed when I read a certain comment on a certain forum by a certain well-known informer. Chances are it’ll be for the DS (OK) but not turn-based (WTF). She also said Famitsu are wrong about getting the original team. This is from the same person who claims 7th Dragon is as good as confirmed for NA release.

      • Did you really think this game wasn’t going to come out on DS? That’s what I thought of immediately, seeing as that’s where the majority of RPGs are now a days.

        • Tokyo Guy

Yeah, the DS is basically the de-facto platform for old school RPGs. Any of the home consoles are just too difficult to program for. Though it would be interesting to see Lufia released as DLC…

…speaking of Nintendo should try and get Lufia 1 and 2 on the Virtual Console ASAP.

        • kupomogli

I haven’t seen a Lufia game not on a Nintendo system so I’d assume it would come out on the PSP, but there are chances it could come out on the PSP. There are alot of RPG titles on both the DS and the PSP.

Overall I’d rather have it for the PSP, you know how many 3D DS RPGs that have come out and every single one of them have pretty much the exact same graphical style. There are very few 2D RPGs on the DS which in my opinion would be perfect for the system given the quality they could have. Let the 3D RPGs on the PSP.

      • Your comment also curbs my enthusiasm (oh, so that’s where they got it). I was telling a friend I want this to be on ANYTHING except the DS. The last “Lufia” games, or as I called them, “Lufail”, sucked it up on the handhelds. Lufia 1 was good, but only because I played Lufia 2 first so nothing was spoiled for me.

Lufia 2 is, by all means, a nearly perfect SNES RPG experience. Challenging puzzles and moderately tough bosses? Sure. Stereotypical, but engaging, story and characters? Yep. New Game +? You bet. Optional 100 floor random dungeon? Uh-huh.

There’s nothing to complain about there. I really hope this turns out to be a good return. And for heaven’s sake, not the DS. It just… I don’t feel it’ll do it justice.

        • I agree. The old Lufia’s are classic. I’m not sure how I feel about the DS getting it. I wish we could have it on a console but everything seems to be going to the handhelds (understandable in Japan, I guess). My only gripe is, as much good as handhelds get, I don’t seem to open my copies as often because I don’t get much time on the them. So I have a pile waiting to be played.

@Denpa: Thanks for ruining my Lufia-high! J/k. Interesting info, indeed. I really hope it still turns out for the better. Lu-fi-aaaaah (“Hook” reference, :P)

          • kupomogli

            Lufia, Lufia, Lu-fi-aaaa

  • nyobzoo

I can’t help but seeing it as a handheld game

  • Jirin

Here’s praying for it to be like a modern Lufia 2, awesome dialog, puzzles, and IP meters intact!

Only there are some fixes they could make to Lufia 2. For instance, Lufia 2 was too fetchquesty. (“We’re going out to save the world. Wait! This random girl wants to get a flower from the top of a mountain! Let’s go!”) If they take the things that were good about Lufia 2 and ditch the things that were bad, it could be a great game.

And I’m just happy it’s on DS and not PSP. Because I have a DS and not a PSP. (Though I might need to get a PSP for VC2).

im not entirely sure about yasunori…but they better get him to compose music, he made the greatest music i have heard in any video game. and the lands cursed by the gods has been confirmed that it is a ds game (which i wasnt hoping for, but could still be friggen awesome) it is a 3D action rpg with voice acting and is to be released 25 february 2010, i dunno if there will be an english version (no one has confirmed that). and the main character is a woman named selena (possibly selan, or serena from other lufia games)

  • Six_Feet_Below

and if anybody could confirm anything of the story please let me know.
