It’s Ridge Racer Accelerated!

Three years have passed since the “It’s Ridge Racer” joke. Perhaps, we’ve forgotten about it, which means it’s time for a new Ridge Racer game.

 

Maybe. Well, probably. Namco Bandai trademarked Ridge Racer Accelerated in Japan, a sign that the series may come back.

 

Huh. I wonder if this is linked to the “that RPG will return” countdown. What if RPG stands for “racing platform game”. Kidding!

    That's actually something I'm surprised we haven't really seen, a Racing RPG. There have been many racing games that have some RPG elements, and vice-versa. But never really a true fusion of the two.

    Squaresoft's Racing Lagoon was pretty close to a full-on fusion of Racing/RPG. Never made it out of Japan, and it was probably a better concept than it ended up being as a game... but it was around.

    Then there were, as you hinted at, some racers with more RPG-ish elements. SNK's Riding Hero was an early Neo Geo motorcycle racer with a story mode. Ridge Racer Type 4 was kind of similar in that it had an actual narrative story mode.

    At any rate, I'm thrilled to see anything new Ridge Racer. I love 6 and 7 (6.5?), and I'm happy to see we may not have to wait for a new console launch to see the next entry in the series.

    What about Genki's Kaido Battle 1 and 2? Or the Initial D games?
