This Week In Imports: Cave Takes A Chance

By Spencer . November 23, 2009 . 1:39am

imageCave is testing the import scene by making Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5 a region free Xbox 360 game. All of their other shooters have been locked for Japanese consoles only, which makes this a huge step. Let’s hope this decision pays off because we all want Deathsmiles II and the rest of their games to be region free.

Other notable titles and trilogy starters this week are La Pucelle Ragnarok and Professor Layton and the Devil’s Flute.

  • Unfortunately, I have to wait until someone confirms that Mushi will also play on PAL consoles.
  • MadMirko
Is Fighting Fantasy REALLYREALLY out this week?
  • Death Smiles II? Man, I'm still waiting to see if Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi Extra gets a release date at some point already!
By some crazy chance, maybe they're waiting to see how Mushihimesama Futari does...hm.
  • SeventhEvening
They've said they want to see how well Mushihimesama does so they can determine if future games will be region free. Cave said if the import sales are high enough, they'll consider things like more English options or even localization.
  • Ujn Hunter
Does it cost them more money to flip the Region Free flag on their disc? This isn't making sense otherwise. If they don't have any plans on releasing the games outside of Japan, then the Region lock is just limiting their sales.
  • nyoron
Maybe if this sells well enough they'll take those sales figures and try to shop their games around for localization again... after turning the region lock back on of course. And then there's still no guarantee that anyone will pick them up - and everything is back to square one.

But who knows, maybe it will all work out.

That's how I feel. I don't see a reason to have a region lock on any game released in USA, PAL or JAP regions. If someone want's to import a game they should be able to. I think there would be less modded consoles if we went region free. But I don't know the ins and outs of the industry. Maybe there is a cost associated with the region code.

I mean, the only argument I can think of against region free is that it becomes more difficult to track each region's sales. But if you keep track of where shipments are being sent, even that's a pretty small problem.

I was just reciting what I read as part of the announcement Cave made about Mushihime Futari. I didn't think it made a lot of sense either.

I know, I just hope they say something about Kizuna 360 alrdy too! Since I don't want to play a shmup on the small DS (maybe on a LL wouldn't be so bad). Maybe 5pb messed up the Dodonpachi port so bad it go axed :(... I would've ordered them both to save an extra $4 if it doesn't say TBA forever... alrdy got the LE Mushihime pre-ordered, I think the soundtracks and box would be worth it :) I have the Mushihime theme on my 360 and a Reco wallpaper on my laptop right now :)
  • Now that most (import) games are region locked for the 360 and I was forced to get a J-system I don't mind the non-region locking at the moment. I hope, for everyone's sake, that they start making more games region free. The next generation of systems better be. =( DSi is moving in the wrong direction.

I wonder how long until they localize The Devil's Flute. Fighting Fantasy? Is it _finally_ here? I hope I can get my hands on it.

so many good games, and not even half of them coming here..
  • EdgeKun
    So torn. On one hand, I really want to support this movement and encourage them by importing it. On the other hand, it's -really- expensive. ;o;
  • justinslot
Play Asia does have an 8 dollars off coupon right now--that'll make it a little cheaper: DP-UZZ-ERB
  • SeventhEvening
I second that. I like danmaku, but I'm rarely willing to shell out much for them.
  • nyobzoo
Mushihimesama Futari is way too expensive and way too short for me to import.
  • I don't get the comments on how omg expensive this is. Maybe current-gen non-handheld games are out of people's price range, but they typically cost $60.* An import being $10 more is not that much of a premium (and it's less with P-A's coupon)

    * I can only speak for the USA.
  • Aoshi00
Not many are willing to shell out $70-80 for a shmup, since most people see this genre's value being at $20 or so, they got spoiled by Raiden Fighters Aces, some think even Raiden V was expensive at $40. Like Wartech Senko no Ronde launching at full $60, it bombed, and people didn't even buy it until it dropped to around $10-20. I have no problem shelling out this much since I have lots of fun by playing them over and over (I'm not even that good), but these could arguably be sold as downloadable games for a much more affordable price.
  • Aoshi00
I'm getting Mushihime and the new Layton, the young Luke is adorable :)!
  • Hello_Hello
Oh wow, a new Spectral Force game. I hope it gets localized for North America. It looks pretty good:
