New Final Fantasy XIII Trailer Shows Vanille’s Mech Summon

By Spencer . November 24, 2009 . 10:50pm

One thing nice about watching Final Fantasy XIII trailers right now is everything is truly new. The game isn’t out anywhere so you’re seeing things like Vanille’s mecha summon and giant ochus in motion for the first time.

In less than a month that’s going to change. Enjoy the freshness while it lasts!

LOL I am eternally bemused with the manner in which Square basically quarantines a game from the media and then, just before release, releases so many spoiler-related screenshots and media that you might as well not even play it. I still remember being shocked at the Sephiroth character in FF7 if only because Square DIDN'T mention anything about him prior to release.

Though I'm still waiting for the "revelation" about the game's actual story. It seems like a bunch of incoherent nonsense at the moment, similar to The Spirits Within...hopefully it's like FFVII in that there is a huge, expansive world way beyond the "Midgar" we are being bombarded with in the media.
  • So uh, it's pretty much 100% confirmed we won't be getting dual language tracks in the North American release, right?
  • ShinGundam
    Yes
  • Aoshi00
Also, the characters on screen would actually have custom lip synch for Eng and Jpn respectively, like MGS4 (which is welcoming since I didn't like Lost Odyssey Eng lip synch not matching Jpn dialogue). Kojima explained before if we were to have dual track then they would need 2x videos on the single blu-ray disc which wasn't possible. So for me that makes it worth importing. Otherwise I would grit my teeth and wait 3 months. Also My Hands.. and I know I might not like Vanille's Aussie voice (no offense to Australians here, even if that might actually be fitting considering her background),though I would also get the US version on day 1.
  • I might be importing as well, but I can't read Japanese D: your so lucky xD
  • International version to follow in 2011.
  • Aoshi00
Yes, w/ English voice acting and Jpn in game text if X, X-2, XII Zodiac were any indication, but chances are you probably still wouldn't get the Jpn dub unlike Star Ocean 4 International.
  • So tacky... is this really what new fans to the series want? Or is it just that Square can't do any better anymore?
  • Nika
No idea, I simply hope the story is good and the gameplay is entertaining. As for what square can do these days, personally I feel they are getting a little arrogant, after all it doesn't matter what they make people will buy it. (Me included of course). But tacky or not, you'll have to admit it all looks very good, so at least in that part they have put a lot of work.

We'll have to wait how the story is, but I highly doubt it will be a bad game.

Since all the best people have left the company, this is probably the best they can do now.

    The Best people ?

    1) I love Snow calling Lightning Nee-san, would've been cooler if everyone calls her "Anego" :)
    2) We have FFXIII VS main char and the fan-holiding dude from Last Remnant :)
    3) Hope's dad's Xenogsaga Ep2-like blocky fist has to go :(

Other than that, love every trailer S-E has put out to tease us so far, now just need to d/l this again when it's out on PSN :)

    I don't think I'm spoiled too much.

lol With this kind of trailer, there's lots of "changed minds" of FFXIII. Heh, I remember that there were those "playa haters" and thought FFXIII was gonna be a bad game.

But this trailer, looks really cool :)
  • BK0000
I'm not feeling it. This game just doesn't connect with me and every trailer I see makes me like it less and less. That abomination isn't Final Fantasy.
  • ShinGundam
I think you need to play it not watch it or you have grown out of video games :3
  • badmoogle
I wouldn't call it an "abomination" but i definitely relate with your point. This game just doesn't give me the Final Fantasy vibe, like the older Squaresoft games did (especially FFVII,FFIX,FFX.)
After FFX something went wrong imo and the games became too "poppy."
  • Wait, wait, wait. You're telling me that FFXII and an online game were too "poppy" compared to FFVII, FFVIII and FFX? Does not compute.
  • xking2
I can honesly say that after playing through the final fantasy series in preparation for dissidia, this is oly the second time that I actually get "magical warmth" kind of vibe from a final fantasy game. The only other time was FF9.
Don't get me wrong; the stories of most of the others are great, but only FF9 gave me the thought "I'm gonna remember this forever". Even FFX, the only one I actually bought at the time of release has already faded away from my heart long ago. But FF9, which I finished 2 years ago, still burns brightly in my heart, and I haven't even touched it since..

I guess where I'm going with this is that in my opinion, the game is connecting with me and it's feeling more and more like I think a final fantasy game should..

I think what really got me was the beginning of the trailer..
The surreal dream esque pop music coupled with the scene depicting the party riding on a dragon through a cloudy sky, dodging bullets with the allegory goofball hanging on from behind.
  • UnleashTheCasey
    So much for Carbuncle.

Something tells me the necklaces the majority of the characters are wearing are going to pop up on the SE online store for $100+.

After mulling it over in my head, I've decided to stop my bitching about FFXIII. A few reasons.

A: While I still don't exactly like the summons, I'm sure there will be an explanation as to why shiva is a bike and other things like that.

B: One of my bigger complaints about Final Fantasy 13 was that it's gone into Sci-fi, and that wasn't really my thing. Soon after an internal rant in my head, I realized that Final Fantasy was already Sci-Fi in some aspects (Final Fantasy Four had you go to the MOON, and when you come back with an ALIEN, you have to go inside a big robot and destroy it's CPU.). Later that same day I talked to someone about how much I loved the Phantasy Star series, which is totally Sci-Fi.

C: I know that despite my bitching, someone I know will have the game, and I'm going to end up playing the hell out of it anyway, and probably like it.

I think the last trailer that came out finally broke me, and this one was the follow-up punch. All I need now is a 360 or a PS3 and I'm good.
  • You _know_ the holiday spirit is here when kazalt turns a new leaf. =)
  • kazalt
::quickly finds something to complain about::

There's voice acting in the game?! SLAP IN THE FACE! =P
  • Think we could get a racing game out of this?
  • So I was looking at the battle section of the trailer and noticed that on that part around 3:40, Vanille, the current controled character which is set to the Healer optima, DOESN'T have Attack as her first command , which we alredy knew, instead she has Recover(or it'll be translated to something like that), which probably means that each optima has a unique "first" command, which is awesome since I love juggling jobs in FF games.
I've also noticed in this and on a past video that the "Blaster" optima seems to have lots of "blows", for example, in this video, around 3:58 Lightning uses Wind Blow, Flame Blow, Spark Blow, Frost Blow and Aero, in that order.
I wonder whatever do you have to do to trigger those slow-mo close ups too:O?

IMO it's interesting how the series has taken this turn and most gamers HATE it. To me the BEST of the series will always be FFVI I've played it far more than all the others combined. I really am quite anxious for this release to see if I can get the bad after taste it was from previous installments. When X was released I was really skeptic about it and when it finished I lost the love I had for Square, this one looks real promising, even though I can't read Japanese I'm importing and when it's released stateside I'll purchase it too. If other users here feel differently about my opinion I didn't try to insult anyone's love for a title in particular from the Final Fantasy Series. I just feel that Square is losing their touch but they somehow always get my support.
