Nippon Ichi Going Retro With Classic Dungeon

By Spencer . November 27, 2009 . 2:06pm

imageIn addition to Absolute Modding Hero Project, Nippon Ichi has another new intellectual property set for next year. Classic Dungeon, as the title implies, is a classic dungeon crawler.

This week’s issue of Dengeki revealed the game, which has 2D dot graphics and optional 8-bit music to give the game a retro feel. You can play with that feature on the official site. Seems like Nippon Ichi is giving away the chiptunes soundtrack as a pre-order bonus too.

Classic Dungeon is scheduled to come out for the PSP on February 18, 2010.

  • Wonder if it'll be Half minute hero style graphics
  • Site opens on 12/03, uh?

I'll keep my eyes open for this one. With dot graphics, there's a strong chance it will be brought to the US via PSN only.
  • I don't like that attitude!!
  • Hey, I too would like a physical copy, but I think the chances are against us :P
  • blargggg
would prefer it that way. why waste a UMD on something that'll barely take up any space?
  • You are a very bad person! =P I don't want to see great idea's like this get stuck in the "Land of No-Physical-Media" where things go to die on soon to be N-Gage plagued leprocy systems (Read PSP Go).

[All: Please ignore all hyperbole if you are offended easily, thank you.]
  • Awesome, I'm psyched.

Exellent, i love these types of games - its seems like its becoming a trend to harken back to the good old 8bit days

    Half minute hero
    3D dot heros
    and now this
  • Guadia Quest, too.
  • rar, approved! Plus the music totally reminds me of Cave Story <3
  • Will preorder from NISA the second it's available. BTW this is said to be Action RPG.

I notice there are some interesting keywords in the page source... particularly these three:

MANOAGAZU (Manoir Gazou?), PUDDING, SOUMA (マノアガズ,プディング,ソウマ)
Also I wish someone could unofficially translate the subtitle: ~扶翼の魔装陣~

In fact I'd appreciate if anyone could properly translate the following: http://remoon.blog15.fc2.com/blog-entry-10679.html

I'm loving the new trend of older-style graphics. Not only are they pleasing to those of us who enjoy nostalgic titles, but they're probably easier, and cheaper, for companies to develop. Cheaper development costs, hopefully not at the cost of quality, means more games.

When they say "optional 8-but music" in a "classic dungeon crawler" I'm getting a Dark Spire feel. That is a very good thing.

finally somebody knows what me want!!!
  • Lots of good dungeon crawlers these days.

Sheesh, Nippon Ichi is bsure busy this school year :l

Last year they arely did anything besides Disgaea 3's US release.

    It's a good thing, though.

I loves me some of that Nippon Ichi.

Whoa whoa whoa, NI is going nuts.
Let's see there is this plus:

    Princess Antiphonia
That Power Ranger type Hero RPG that was posted in Famitsu (I think), is that the absolute modding hero thing?
    Prinny 2
    Disgaea infinite.
The two La pucelle sequels hinted at a week ago.

    Am I missing anything?

Actually I thought NI fell off after Disgaea 3 both in that A) they weren't making new games and B) I thought they were going to go the look-how-random-and-crazy-this-is route that D3 took but all these new projects are starting to give me hope again.

Cool, but why im starting to get the feeling most of the games are trying to get back on time?

That's because retro is the new in thing. Now I love a lot of the 8bit titles far more than the newer titles we have out now,but I feel that developers are attempting all these retro games because they cost far less to develop as well as you have many gamers jumping all over the idea.

Now. Half Minute Hero is an amazing game. That's definitely a game done right. Retro or not it could have pulled it off either way due to how well it was developed.

I was sort of interested in 3d Dot Game Heroes, but them I watched some gameplay videos. Now I'm not too big a fan of Zelda because all the time it's the same game over and over. The graphical style of 3d Dot Game Heroes was already pushing it because I only slightly liked the 3d effect, and then after the videos I watched I quickly became turned off by it. Now sure it shows you in the videos, but I realized how bad it really looked to have a 3d character only having two/three frames for an attack. For 2d that's fine, but yeah. I quickly got turned off on the idea of the game.

So yeah. I for one am no longer waiting for 3d Dot Game Heroes. I still love From Software and Demon's Souls is amazing, but hopefully they push out something else. Next King's Field, Demon's Souls, Armored Core, or Evergrace, please?
