You Could Be The Proud Owner Of Earthbound Zero

By Spencer . November 30, 2009 . 6:13pm

image At one time Nintendo kicked around the idea of releasing Mother, the original NES game, outside of Japan. Mother under the name Earthbound made a brief appearance in Nintendo Power, but never made it to stores. A few prototypes are floating around and one of those can be yours.

Well, if you have $3710.23 to spare. That’s the price an Earthbound Zero prototype is going for right now on eBay.

Pricey? Yes, but it’s a heck of a lot rarer than the gold Nintendo World Championship cartridges and those go for $15,000 or more.

Is it wrong that I kinda want this? I mean, it’s a fully English Mother 1!
    Good thing I don’t have $4k lying around…

    • lostinblue

I have to agree, lucky me, I don’t have the money.

For that price you wonder why emulation is so prevalent…

  • kupomogli

Mother 1 and 2 are average at best. They’re like the Dragon Warrior games, and while better than Dragon Warrior 1 and 2, worse than all the rest.

I have the money so purchasing it would be no big deal, I know I could get the money back, but I’ll wait until it’s a proto that I really want. Hopefully we’ll one day see a Magic of Scheherazade 2 proto. The game had an ad with pictures in one magazine and was mentioned in a Nintendo power, but never once seen again afterwards. I’d be on that in a second if there somehow was one.

      wow, owch.

    • ihatenoobs

*passes kupomogli a flame resistant suit* I think your gonna need this….

lol. I’m used to people making fun of DQ (mother not so much). But it’s all about taste. Not everyone is going to like every game. So I think it’s pointless to start a flame war over something subjective.

For example, I think FFVII is far outclassed by FFVI.

    • Code

rar, honestly I’m a little surprised there wasn’t more Mother fans on Siliconera! True, I definitely know it is subjective, but when has that ever stopped anything >w<' But seriously though I'm just getting my 2 cents in, even though I do like both Mother and Dragon Quest series.rar, even though it obviously has standard mechanics and design and certainly seems comparable to Dragon Quest, I think that’s only looking at the face value, the Mother series was never been about those things, it’s a silly lighthearted adventure full of humor, massive amounts of clever references, with tons of imagination and just pure weirdness that goes into it’s story, locations, and characters. I think definitely makes it rank at the very least above average, since there’s just nothing quiet like them. Not saying it’s the best, but average? Nah.

im sorry but i rather download a emulator then pay that much, an sine its a prototype(not full game) its not illegal(well in my point of view)…

  • Code

rar! Mother >w<!! I've always loved Earthbound since I was a kid, definitely one of those games that lead me to become a big RPG gamer. It'll always have a special place in my heart. Mother/Earthbound Zero, and Mother 3 both were also super memorable for me, rar, I wish Nintendo would take and push the Mother series, further, it's always had a feel all it's own.

    • kupomogli

I’ve yet to play Mother 3, so don’t take my post that I dislike that one as well. I may enjoy it more than the first two.

Also. Like I said, Earthbound is average, but it doesn’t mean it sucks and I don’t like it. The unique setting is really what makes the game, so everything else may suck, but the setting makes it somewhat enjoyable.

That could have been your mulah, Nintendo!

It’s pretty interesting how much this prototype is going for. It could very well be the most expensive game ever, maybe even to exist.

  • Tokyo Guy

As far as the community seems to know, there is-and has always been-just ONE prototype. In the past there were tons of fake auctions of people who basically dumped the ROM onto a NES cart and tried to trick collectors into thinking it was an authentic item.

The auction seems to be authentic, but IIRC the real prototype looked different and lacked the black marker title on it.
