Sonic Classic Collection Brings Genesis Sonic To DS

By Spencer . December 1, 2009 . 11:56am

imageAfter two leaks, Sega officially announced Sonic Classic Collection for Europe.

And it’s exactly what it sounds like, classic Sonic games on a Nintendo DS cart. The compilation includes Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. What no Sonic Spinball?

Sega says the games will be “optimised to take full advantage of the Nintendo DS” and include a quicksave feature. Sonic fans can look forward to unlocking goodies like videos and pictures. Europe gets the game in March 2010. We’re asking about a possible North American version.

Update: Confirmed for North America as a “spring 2010” release.

    No Sonic 3 & Knuckles? :(

  • lordgeo

What’s with the first screenshot showing Sonic and Knuckles at the same time during the first Eggman battle from Sonic & Knuckles? That’s not possible in the original game, unless Sega is adding in a special co-op mode for some of these games… Which would be very cool.

Was wondering the exact same thing! What manner of Black Magic is this???

Also, a cart with specifically S1 -> S&K seems like it’s begging for all the different lock-on carts. Sega, you had better not ditch S3&K and fail me. D:

Sweet. I remember I got a Sonic mega collection for PC and played it all the time. ahh, such good memories…

I wonder how the scaling is in this game, like, if it will be squashed lossy scaling, smooth scaling, or just plain cropping of the original. Or maybe a mixture of both.

    Only those four games? Bah.

“Sonic Spinball”. Oh, that game drove my 8 year old brain up the wall.Sean Ratcliffe, Vice-President of Marketing for SEGA America, already commented on this so I guess that kind or seals a U.S. release.

Eh, wake me up when they announce they’re giving this one the Sonic Jam treatment, with Time Attacks and a museum you navigate on foot. Heck, just port Sonic Jam.

I love the classic Sonic games, but seriously, why can’t Sega remake them instead of re-releasing the same ones? Wouldn’t a Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles DS remake be perfect? Like, New Super Mario Bros-style.

Or even the first Sonic… Or the second…

    Do Want.

This is all cool and stuff but seriously, I have all the classic sonic games on my PSP already so I’m not buying this. and what the hell happened to the sonic game they announced back in early September!?

    • matty

It’s “targeted” for 2010, and there’s not much else said about it.

Maybe Sega is pushing this Sonic DS game to keep part of the new game in people’s mind till release? I don’t know, but I love these games so much and the music that appeared in 1 through K are my all time favorites, it’s just hard for me to refuse a port of them. The only port that didn’t work out so well was the GBA one.
I’m also interested in seeing what slight changes there are in these.

oh those screenshots bring back memories. I no longer have my genesis so I’ll be picking this up. :D
