Dragon Quest IX, Demon’s Souls Are Hot On Google Japan

By Spencer . December 2, 2009 . 8:22pm

imageDragon Quest IX topped Japan’s list of fastest rising search terms according to Google’s yearly zeitgeist report. It beat out politician Mieko Tanaka who had a tabloid-ish topic and bing, which was the number three term. Dragon Quest IX was also the top ranked mobile search. Japan loves Dragon Quest, no surprise there right?

It wasn’t the only game on the charts. Demon’s Souls ranked number six topping Japanese drama Zenigeba and Kamen Rider Decade.

Why did these games make the list? Not completely sure, but players searching for guides probably helped both terms.

In North America, Ghostbusters was the top video game search (not overall) term followed by UFC and somehow Twilight made the list despite only having a quiz game.

How in the world has Demons Souls managed to get that high on the listing? Higher than Monster Hunter no less? The game never seems to sell [here] yet for reasons unknown, it has this huge cult following. Personally I can’t seem to get into it; the game is too “carelessly” done and feels much like From Software’s first PS2 game (what was that called? Something “Ring”) in terms of quality and whatnot.

But I can see why people who want a major challenge would love the game.

I have no idea what your talking about “carelessly done” or how you could question the quality, its one of the best games out this year, and for many people the GoTY. It bleeds quality. While the game wasn’t a massive blockbuster of a title it did sell around 500,000 copies worldwide.

After the critically acclaimed reception the game received and the better then expected sales, I’m hoping for a more expansive sequel. Easily one of the best games I’ve picked up in a while.

I loved Demon’s Souls, but I was referencing guides on my laptop very often.

  • badmoogle

Demon’s Souls is one of the best games of all time for me.People who haven’t tried it are missing the definite RPG experience.

And i loled about DS’s high ranking position in the Japanese google searches.:)But it’s hardly a surprise when you consider its high difficulty and how people today usually hate challenging things.

    • I love challenging games, but when they are absurdly difficult, or in RPGs require unnecessary grinding, I think it’s quite stupid actually.

      • badmoogle

Well maybe you are playing them the wrong way.And there’s no need for extensive grinding in Demon’s Souls.

  • I already want dragon quest 9 here D:
Dragon quest is a big hit in japan, as for me, i love them as well, dragon ball art style will never tire me
