Classic Final Fantasy Artist Redraws Final Fantasy XIII

By Spencer . December 9, 2009 . 12:09am

Before Tetsuya Nomura led the look of Final Fantasy, Yoshitaka Amano was the main character designer. Amano did not draft Lightning, Snow, or the other heroes in Final Fantasy XIII, but what if he did?

This is what they would look like.

The image is from this week’s issue of Famitsu where Amano gives his take on the cast of Final Fantasy XIII.

Holy crap that looks awesome, I love Amano's art style.

God bless Siliconera, I had just heard about this picture and was wondering if they would pick up on the story.

Looks like he was a bit more faithful to the source material this time.

I love Amano's rendition, just like what he drew for FFX before (http://www.ffshrine.org/ffx/ffx_amanoart.php), he did illustrations for 7 too for Cloud riding the bike. And of course he did the original design for IX, which I loved, even though the in-game is in SD Minaba Hideo style http://www.creativeuncut.com/art_final-fantasy-...

We really need the old dream team again.. (Gooch, Amano, Uematsu).

The only one that looks better, to me, is the black-haired woman. Amano's proportions generally annoy me, but I do like his monster and summon designs.

Wow, he actually colored in somebody's skin. I think that's the first FF drawing not comprised entirely of albino vampires I've seen from him.

When it comes to FF, Amano's monster designs are orders of magnitude better than his drawings of people.

finally final fantasy without emo characters

    nomura may DIE!!!

  • Masengan

I do not like Amano's art work one bit, I'll take Namura any time (bring on the countless belts and zippers!)

I prefer Amano's original FF designs with the flowing cloth and hair and other details that make his style unique. It doesn't come across as well when he's working off of someone else's concepts.

  • wildarms

nice but why i feel lighting eyes are too separate from each other?

  • JohnCasey1

You can't even spell Nomura's name right.

    Fail. Epic, epic fail.

  • JohnCasey1

What's with the lack of Snow?

  • http://twitter.com/samielo Sami Elo

Would be all the better for it.

But he's just hiding in front of Sazh.

  • nonoko

    Amano, I want you back!

  • http://meikiyou.deviantart.com meikiyou

In the early games weren't Nomura the monster design?

  • fallen

afaik (and without fact-checking) nomura only ever did “image illustration” in the older FFs, which i always figured was the “sprite”-ification of amano's designs to 16-bit form.

  • http://meikiyou.deviantart.com meikiyou

he began working in ff4 as debugger, and then in ffv battle graphics along with more three person and ffvi he worked as one of the four graphic directors

but in the credits of ffvi advance he is listed as monster designer

i dun know the monsters usually didn't had anything in common with his style so it should be as you said

  • Chow

Haha, yes, that's the first impression I get whenever I see his character portraits.

  • EvilAkito

Wow, reminds me of the good old days. I miss being able to actually call myself a Final Fantasy fan, but the post-16-bit era games just don't do it for me.

  • kupomogli

This looks like some of Amano's worst art. Every single time I see his art work I either love it hate it.

I mean honestly. If you go back to his early work starting at Final Fantasy going up to Final Fantasy 6, almost every bit of the artwork looks so amazing, then you look at some artwork he made of FF7 and then some later(while one of his FF7 works looked nice.) But overall. It's like. Man. Amano. Your stuff is getting worse the older you get(except for FF9 which also had alot of good artwork.)

Now I know he didn't do the character designs of FF7, but he did do some artwork of his own.

  • TokyoGuy

I'm sorry, but IMHO Amano is a total joke. Scribbling humanoid shapes on a piece of paper is hardly what I would consider good artwork. I've never understood what everyone sees in his “pictures”. If someone would care to enlighten me, I would be more than happy to listen.

Though I will also say that Nomura has also seriously disappointed me in recent years. Whereas I loved his designs in Parsite Eve (and where is PE3 BTW?) and Final Fantasy 7 and 8, he has become the modern-day Toryiama: a “one-hit wonder” who has a single design style and can't do anything that looks even remotely different.

Let's face it, Amano can't draw people.
That drawing is one of the ugliest things that could happen to FFXIII.

    Stick to monsters Amano, please.
