Sunsoft Acquires Telenet’s Entire Catalog

By Spencer . December 10, 2009 . 12:40am

image Cosmic Fantasy, Valis, Exile, and every intellectual property created by Nihon Telenet made before the studio closed down is now in the hands of Sunsoft.

Part of Sunsoft’s brand revival involved acquiring Nihon Telenet’s library of games with assistance from Gaijinworks. “After Telenet closed, I was sure there was a way to keep their great ideas and characters alive, and I’m extremely happy that Sunsoft has stepped into that role,” Gaijinworks President, Vic Ireland, remarked.“There are numerous fantastic products to work with in this acquisition, and there is nothing but amazing possibilities for the Telenet IP as a whole.”

Gaijinworks and Sunsoft plan to bring the original games, some of which were localized by Working Designs, to Virtual Console on the Wii and “other platforms.” In addition to seeing Cosmic Fantasy 2 again, gears are in motion to create new games and remakes based on Telenet’s past works.

No specific titles were announced, but Ireland is keen on Cosmic Fantasy. “Cosmic Fantasy has a special place in it since we were only able to do two [in the series],” Ireland said when we asked him about revisiting the series. “I really like 1, 3, 4A, and 4B and were only able to do one of those chapters. To be able to revisit that would be fantastic, but the rights are really a problem.”

The rights aren’t a problem anymore.

Special thanks and a round of applause to Denpa no Sekai for the tip. Thanks!!

Holy crap! Valis and Exile making a return? Sign me up!

  • MadMirko

    That’s SO sweet.

  • Trotmeister

Is this the “big” announcement? Re-release of a bunch of an extremely obscure titles only a few people care about? Bah.

    • JeremyR

      Bigger than I thought.

  • Sounds good, thanks for sharing it with us, Denpa ;)

So, all the Valis games, huh? Well, except for “X” maybe, but we’re not going to see that anyway.
I have a friend who is (still) an enormous fan of the Valis series, so he’s going to get a kick out of hearing this.

  • Valis?

  • kazalt

I remember seeing these games in my old gaming magazines not too long ago. Never got a chance to play any of them though=(

Wow. I seem to recall a lot of late term SNES localizations that got stalled when Sega bought up Rennovation from Wolfteam in 1993. Maybe we’ll see Neugier (pre-Tales Wolfteam ARPG) in english after all?

So long as these “other consoles” include PS3/PSP sign me up. Not that 360 users should be left out but since I and my brother both have PS3’s its nice to be able to share content which we cant do with 360. This is good news and big enough for me to be happy, Vic has always been a champion for the “little guy” and this just adds another star to his catalog.

  • I knew it..sort of! I don’t know why the thought of Valis being revived crossed my mind a lot when I heard this story. Nice thinking, there’s definitely a market for re-makes and revivals for many of Telenet’s franchises. I’d like El Viento and Valis!

Holy crap, I’ll buy it all.
