TV Special Has A Behind The Scenes Look At Final Fantasy XIII

By Spencer . December 15, 2009 . 7:07am

With only days until launch, Square Enix is promoting Final Fantasy XIII heavily now. There’s even a documentary about the game, which has making of footage and a peek inside Square Enix’s headquarters.

It’s all in Japanese so the developer, singer, and voice actor interviews might not mean much. You can skip videos 1-3 and go straight to the production video. Videos 5-6 have hosts Ai from Morning Musume jumping into battles and Masashi Ebara, the voice of Sazh, playing with Lightning in horse riding mode.

I'm glad they made it a tv special, and not something they stuck on an extra dvd to pack in a collector's edition, with a hefty price tag attached. =)

I bet that's exactly what they'll do in the European Collector's edition =P

Well, not really, but something like that.

C'mon, learn with Sony, people. (Uncharted, Siren)

the more I see of the battle system the less I want to trudge through this game. XII was headed in the right direction with the gambit system…it's too bad Square didn't decide to take it to the next level instead of getting rid of it.

    Right direction ? how ?

Awesome videos! It's actually the first time I've ever seen the venerable Ebara Masashi (Might Guy of Naruto) in the flesh, pretty cool guy. It's funny to see him try to keep up w/ the gameplay (he was a little annoyed and went “would somebody explain to me how this plays”, and then he got 5 stars once they passed him the controller :) Those fancy graphics must've gotten to him :) Ebara-san's is quite cool as Sazh, he has a deep voice similar to Koyama Rikiya (yeah, the “Basch von Rosenberg” dude who thought Vesperia was coming to the Wii, lol).

Wow, the Morning Musume girl is ultra cute, she's like a splitting image of the actress Ishida Hikari. Nothing hotter than to see a beautiful girl play video games (she said she saw her parents play the old FFs and she started w/ VIII and IX). Vanille's VA is pretty cute too, in an air head sort of way.

If you want MMO, you have the upcoming FF IV right? While I didn't totally dislike XII, I'm glad they got “back on track” w/ XIII.

The gambit system was great, it relieved the user of the mundane actions of constant menu navigation, while at the same time giving you control over the customization of the automated system. Through the course of the game the design team made the decision to slowly integrate the more diverse actions that you could do to not overwhelm the player right from the get-go. If they'd stuck with the system, and refined it say for example, giving us sub-gambits to existing gambits, or giving us more than one setting for each gambit.

Now that Matsuno has left Square, I don't think we'll ever see another Final Fantasy with a battle system as different from its' predecessor as XII was from X…but then, XII should have just been Vagrant Story 2 anyways.

I don't play MMO's, and I never said I wanted one. I just don't want the same old been there done that with a new skin. I'm hoping that Versus gives us something completely different, even though Nomura said it's more of a traditional Final Fantasy game than XIII is.

XII felt very much like XI/Online to me, except it was a a pseudo single-player MMO w/ pre-set AI instead of needing to form a party online. I did like certain elements from XII and how streamline teh gambit system was, but the micromanagement just wasn't very fun and ultimately felt too MMO for me. License board was a major pain in the butt though.

It looks like XIV would be like that if that's up your alley. I'm skipping XIV and would play XV (a pity since this is Uematsu's comeback for FF since X). I'm still not sure what Versus would play like, I thought it was going to be action oriented like the Kingdom Hearts series.
