Final Fantasy XIII Rated “T” For Violent Content And Side Boobage

By Spencer . December 17, 2009 . 1:41am

image Final Fantasy XIII is rated “T” for teen. No surprise there, but why did it get that rating? The ESRB has an amusing, slightly spoilerfic explanation.

Here’s how Final Fantasy XIII earned its mild language, suggestive themes, and violence content descriptors.

Players assume the roles of heroes caught in a war between two opposing forces in this fantasy role-playing game. Players travel between the planet Pulse and a moon named Cocoon to engage in missions for magical beings called the "fal’Cie. Missions involve battling enemy soldiers and creatures by using melee attacks (swords, knives, staffs, etc.), firearms, and magic spells (lightning strikes, fire blasts, etc.).

Combat is executed through a modified turn-based system in which players select various commands from a menu while freely moving one of three heroes through the battlefield. Players can also summon elemental creatures to battle an assortment of goblins, golems, zombies, wolves, frogs, bats, and robots.

The game’s cinematic cutscenes contain the most intense depictions of violence: machine gunfire from space ships strafe human characters below; humans and robotic soldiers exchange gunfire—aboard vessels, on the ground; a slow-motion gunfight depicts the cracked lens of a robot shot in the head by two semi-automatics.

Cutscenes occasionally depict female characters dressed in revealing outfits: Holographic dancers—clad in bikini tops, skimpy leotards, and backless chaps—glide above the city during a festivity performance; flying-motorcycle models wear skin-tight tops that expose deep cleavage. And during one elaborate sequence, a female character transforms from a crystal statue back to her human form—sparkle effects, camera panning, and shimmering lights partially obscure the nude character, though side-portions of her breasts are visible (fleeting—one-to-two seconds). The game also contains the expletives "a*s," "damn," and "hell"; however, it is the violent content, the suggestive themes that account for the Teen rating.

Seconds of sideboobs, gunfights with robots, and backless chaps. Dangerous stuff, people.

  • Sounds like a FF game!
Well, the current console generation ones, at least.

I didn’t know backless chaps were making a comeback. I thought once Prince stopped wearing them everyone hung them in the closest for good. Well, whatever floats your boat.

  • MisterNiwa

Side Boobs, i need this game, nao. Cant wait for christmas!

    • Aoshi00

Didn’t read the description to avoid any spoilers.. Side boobage, do they mean Lightning’s? I only have Hurrah to say to that! Our Lord the savior, Santa, give us a Christmas miracle :)! I promise I’d pray..

      • MisterNiwa

I pray for everyone for a Merry Fabula Nova Crystallis Christmas!

Aoishi, we will get it to christmas, make believe! Well, even if i have it sooner, ill have to wait for Christmas Eve!

  • Tokyo Guy

I posted this in the other recent FFXIII topic but just incase anyone here is interested, the Lightning Edition PS3 set comes with the same box art that the North American version has.

  • terra01

Did they just spoil some of the game for us?

”And during one elaborate sequence, a female character transforms from a crystal statue back to her human form—sparkle effects”

That better not be Serah they’re talking about!

    • Tokyo Guy

LOL I think that is indeed a spoiler, though honestly speaking would that even be a surprise?

      • Ereek

Indeed, isn’t that something we’ve known since the TGS? I believe that was at the end of the demo there. Or even before.

        • cowcow

No. The demo only showed her turning INTO a crystal.
This topic actually spoils the rest of the story by stating a person turns back to human from a Crystal (which the trailers and interviews never revealed).

    • Hraesvelgr

The ratings on the ESRB site often contain spoilers, so it’s nothing new. And I’m pretty sure it is indeed Serah.

  • What’s so suggestive about sideboob and backless outfits? Like you don’t see those things in the real world on a daily basis. :P

    • Tokyo Guy

Well the game does have a fair share of violence, much more so than any of the previous titles.

      • Oh, I’m not arguing with the rating. A “T” sounds perfectly reasonable, if only because someone not yet their teens probably wouldn’t understand or fully appreciate the game anyway.

I just…I mean, sideboob? There are clothes that cover you completely that are more “suggestive.” :P

    • MisterNiwa

Well, but in the real world, they aint sexy beauties like in Final Fantasy. :(

      • I was gonna ask him “what world do you live in?!”, but you brought up a good point. Maybe that’s not such a smart idea…

  • Hraesvelgr

You know, I just can’t get over the “backless chaps” bit. I mean, really.

    • You’re surprised? The ESRB is even more prudish than the MPAA, if you can imagine that. I stopped taking them seriously as soon as they made up the “alcohol reference” descriptor (which was in 2004, I think).

  • kupomogli

    Side boobage ftw.

  • Something just occurred to me. Didn’t they mention once that Lightning’s L’cie tattoo is on her chest? Perhaps there’s a scene with a reveal of that but the ESRB left it out because they considered it too spoilerific? I’m guessing that would count as “deep cleavage,” too.

    • MisterNiwa

Well, i know the truth, the game is rated T for Teen because of Snows manly nipples.

I’d rather have some Lightning nipple and change the T for Teen to AO for Adult Only.

      • Aoshi00

Lol, that’s what I thought too. Snow’s, however, in all their HD glory no less, are more than what I want to see. He was flaunting them to the Psi-Com soldiers too, he’s a nudist!

        • MisterNiwa

Ever read/watched Fairy Tail? Snow could be like Gray who is like ‘Hey whats up people?’ -‘OH MY GOD WHERE ARE YOUR CLOTHES?!’ ‘WHAT? MY CLOTHES ARE GONE?!’

          And stuff.. :[

          • Aoshi00

No I haven’t read it.. I think I caught sight of it on the cover of an anime mag when I was at a bookstore recently, just got turned into an anime right? At first I thought it was a “The Law of Ueki” sequel from the drawing.. I got to check it out if I have time.

I think Snow was just bluffing, like “CAN you shoot at this beautiful piece of art, CAN YOU?” lol.. man, all the joking aside, I need to play this game.. haven’t looked forward to a FF this much in a long time.

    • Aoshi00

Here’s some nice cleavage from Lost Odyssey :)..

You can’t beat Queen Ming’s . And Jansen is so adorable, one of my favorite game characters in recent years.

      • Oh my God…that’s the cutest thing I’ve seen in a game in a long time. I think you just instantly made me fall in love with this game.

        • Aoshi00

You should’ve seen the scene w/ Ming revealing the royal birthmark/emblem on her chest by removing the necklace, and Jansen was gawking and all mesmerized, “shiny…” sadly couldn’t find that on youtube. LO is a great RPG indeed. Gotta love that adorable goof, his VA’s improv jokes are grade A.

Most parents don’t even know what ‘suggestive themes’ means.
