Metal Slug XX Blasting Into North America This February

By Spencer . January 5, 2010 . 10:17am

MetalSlugXX_PSP SleeveAs we reported over the weekend, Atlus is working with SNK. They’re bringing Metal Slug XX to North America on February 23.

The run and gun game has six characters, seven stages, and something Metal Slug 7 was sorely missing – a two player mode. Metal Slug XX has an ad-hoc powered cooperative play. Veterans can take on 70+ combat school challenges. Hmm… I wonder if Atlus will spice up the dialogue when Cynthia, the drill instructor, warms up to the player.

Metal Slug XX will be sold in stores for $19.99 and Leona, a seventh playable character so far not mentioned in Japan, will be available on the PlayStation Store for 99 cents.

  • Pretty sweet deal, and although they aren’t distributing the striped blue and white authentic Metal Slug boxers as a bonus they’re doing a contest for four lucky participants:

I’m probably one of the few that didn’t mind not seeing any multiplayer features on the DS version, but I might try it out this time. Actually, I don’t think I ever tried co-op in a Metal Slug game.

  • Please know that the game may be coming only to the PSP system in other words the physical UMD so there is a strong possibility that you PSP Go owners will not be able to play it on your PSP systems.

I doubt it will be UMD only. Atlus has been a pretty solid supporter of putting the games they publish up on PSN right away. I can’t think of anything they’ve released for PSP in the past year or so that isn’t available on PSN – Persona, Kenka Bancho, Hammerin’ Hero, Crimson Gem Saga, Steambot Chronicles, Riviera, Yggdra Union, Class of Heroes, R-Type Tactics… all up there.

I’d expect Metal Slug XX will follow suit and show up on PSN within a week of UMD release.

For what it’s worth, SNK Playmore’s self published PSP releases also all made it to PSN (Samurai Shodown, KOF, Metal Slug, and Neo Geo classics compilations) – so I doubt there are any restrictions SNK is imposing on Atlus to publish the licenses either.

      • Ohh ok then hopefully it was only a rumor then god I got to stop believing in rumor.

I think it’s possible that Atlus is only publishing the UMD version, but SNK will publish the PSN download version themselves.

Because really, you don’t even need a publisher for downloads, really. But you do for physical releases.

SNK had this rated by the ESRB quite a while ago (and for the 360 as well, so probably coming to XBLA from them). It’s only recently that Atlus had it rated as well.
