Nier At The Tavern

By Spencer . January 13, 2010 . 7:06pm

We have new screenshots of Nier (aka Nier Gestalt) showing your usual stringy giant shade thing with its arm cut off and a homely tavern.

The pub acts as a hub. Nier can sign up for new quests there. He can also go to a blacksmith to buy new swords. Weapons can be further upgraded with Grimoire Weiss, you know the talking book that follows Nier around. Words can boost stats and add modifiers like poison or knockback resistance.

Hey Spencer so NIeR replicant is Jpn only:?, I tried finding a release date for Replicant but I havent been successful Im kinda confused now? Gestalt is the one being released in the US?

  • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Yes… unless the major plot twist in the middle of the game turns Nier into bishounen Nier.

I don't think a date for Nier has been announced anywhere. Square Enix USA's official time frame is spring.

So in other words no PS3 release of this game in North America?

Oh well, can't say I'm disappointed, as the game looks horrible with and without the bi-shounen main character(though I must admit the “western” version of the character looks even worse, what's wrong with his eyes? Clearly Square's C-team is working on this game.

If by “C-team” you mean “Cavia”, then yes. Square Enix is merely publishing the game.

Blablahblah quests blablah swords blahbla words… wait, using words for customization? Only thing about this game which have stirred my interest, and yet I doubt the possibilities of this feature are more than a little limited and shallow. I dream of a game where every word in a friggin' dictionary is a Word of Power.

  • Pesmerga00

You may want to look into Rudra No Hihou, aka Treasure of Rudra. It's an SNES RPG where every word you type in is turned into magic spell, or mantra as they call them.

Not the best game, but it's fun and worth a play. There is an English fan translation out there too.

So go forth and fulfill your dream! :)

Kinda reminds me when Megabyte would be infested with those digital worm things in Reboot. o_O

I honestly can't get over how bland this game looks, nor how stupid the main character looks when he puts on that belt/face strap combo. I really dont see this doing well here or in Japan. Perhaps its cavia's past work but there is just something strange about this game, kind of gives me an uneasy feeling. When they first announced it I was interested but the more I found out the less I liked it.

  • Jaxx-Leviathan

Aha, sounds interesting, thanks for the tip. ^^

Maybe Square will have it jump from past to present day. Maybe have him go an an area he'd fought in years ago. Have him flashback to it, allowing the player to have access to the younger version. Maybe something similar to MGS4 with Old Snake at Shadow Moses or pull off time anomalies or paradox like MGS3 business like they did with Raiden. where it witches back and forth. Maybe this way they can explore the whole “mirror” business one the trailers keep referencing to. Another possibility is to have him fight for his sister years before and years later his daughter gets sick from the same thing. I see a great potential to combine the two games instead of separating them. Forgive me, I've said too much. lol.

Ahh it all makes sense now. I didn't know they were just publishing this game.

  • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

This is a little confusing, but we are getting Nier as a PS3 and Xbox 360 game in North America. However, we're getting “Nier: Gestalt” on both platforms under the name Nier.

In Japan, Nier: Gestalt is an “Xbox exclusive” while Nier: Replicant is a “PS3 exclusive.”

    Just want to clarify :)

  • http://www.myanimelist.net/profile/Hraesvelgr Hraesvelgr

Most people who have played Cavia developed games in the past feel the exact same way.

  • Aoshi00

The old man's mask (?) might look a little strange, but I really dig the monster designs, the dark atmosphere just screams Drakengard to me (since this is by Cavia right?), which was a pretty good game if you don't mind hack 'n slash. From a purely artistic point of view, I'm still interested. But I would prefer the good looking dude to the weird dad.

Ahh thanks for clarifying, and here I was under the impression that there wasn't a Gestalt PS3 version.
