Capcom Tried To Get Samurai Pizza Cats For Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

By Spencer . January 20, 2010 . 7:22pm

imageWhen developing the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars Capcom talked to Tatsunoko Productions about using the Samurai Pizza Cats.

Saban picked up Catto Ninden Teyandee from Tatsunoko and released it here under the name Samurai Pizza Cats. Since the show aired in North America these characters would have been a perfect fit for the international version of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.

“We at Capcom too, wanted to see the Samurai Pizza Cats in the game. We were in discussion with Tatsunoko productions to try to get them in the game. It went right up the last minute, but it didn’t go through,” Ryota Niitsuma, Producer said during a web chat earlier today.

Speed Racer got the Hollywood movie treatment so why not put him in? “They thought about Speed Racer, but he’s just a race car driver. It would be hard to incorporate his race car into the game,” Niitsuma contemplated.

Niitsuma also confirmed the anime endings in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes will not be in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars. Ultimate All-Stars also has brand new endings, I earned a few of them already.

rar! I really wanted to play the Samurai Pizza Cats too — my childhood inner child would have literally exploded into flames at the news of Samurai Pizza Cats being in the game.

    • cowcow

Blame Disney. They own the rights now. Saban sold everything before he retired.

      • MisterNiwa

Inner child is crying right now. :(

    • Saturnus

childhood inner child? so the child that was in you when you were a child?

that would have been so cool to see them in the game :(

  • BK0000

They have to save something for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom 2.

  • Guest

Again Tatsunoko Prouctions and….ALL of their anime are terrible imo. Its not why I got this game in the first place. I love the VS series and even though the characters/animes are terrible they’re fun as hell to play with.

In other words I dont care what anime didnt make the cut because I dont like any of them. =P Sucks that the anime endings arent in but they werent of much quality to begin with. Will be getting this game AGAIN.

    • Code

So… what your saying is, the animes are your favorite part! gotcha!

    • Choppasmith

BOO THIS MAN! :PI can’t understand why someone could hate Tatsunoko THAT much. Especially to go as far as bluntly saying *all* their Anime sucks. It like meeting someone who hates kittens and kicks them every time he sees one. Seems kinda silly because have you really seen ALL their Anime? :p I’m really curious what about them can make you say that about everything. At worst, I’d say they’re “dated”. But Karas is bar-none, one of the best LOOKING Anime ever. But at least you’re not one of those “Lik OMG this games sucks because it’s not Marvel. So props to you there. I also agree with you about the endings, they’re really nothing special.

  • Well, at least they tried.

As for Speed Racer, he can throw a few punches around. Racer X could do a pretty mean judo chop. Eh, it’s not like I liked the show, but the movie was fantastic.

They could have put Pops in. He’s was a heavyweight champ.

    • Really? I never in my life felt so cheated out of my time… I wanted to sue the makers for my life back.

      • That’s understandable, but I really had a blast watching the movie in theaters (sober, if you can believe that). Even the ending made me feel like going “#$^@ YEAH!!”, it just got to me. It’s no “And There Will Be Blood”, but I believe it’s underrated in some aspects. Don’t worry about sequel – it was one of the biggest bombs that year. To each their own…

It’s funny ’cause I felt cheated out of watching the show as a kid. It bored the hell out of me. Really, I despised it.

  • Ikaraz

I can’t believe they took out the anime endings.. that’s a real bummer.

  • Jayson_N

Samurai Pizza Cats was one of my favorite cartoons growing up. I never cared much for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, but I would have bought it just for them.

  • Chow

I wonder which version of the Pizza Cats they’d use, as I hear the localization of the series was done by just creating lines that happened to fit what was on the screen, without looking at any of the original transcripts. But I guess even with that, their personalities would’ve been the same no matter the version. As for Speed Racer, they totally could’ve just added him, despite him being just a racecar driver. The argument being that Jin from Marvel vs. Capcom was just a mech pilot that used one of the mechs in his super moves.

    • Code

Oddly enough I looked into this fairly recently, the Japanese version generally seemed to have a more serious tone to most of the characters compared to the dub which was mostly off the wall, crazy. To be fair though it’s one of the few cases where tossing out the original scripts and just flying with what was going-on, on screen was actually far FAR superior and more entertaining.

      • daizyujin

Teyande was a very generic anime. It was good, but nothing overly special. The parody dub of it is what gave SPC its feel. As for rights, it is more than just Disney that is a problem. One thing people don’t understand is that when Saban sold Saban International/Fox International to Disney, while it included the shows, it actually does not include the rights to any of the music in anything. Saban’s current company “Saban Capital Ventures” or whatever owns the rights to all song recordings to Saban’s previous catalogue of shows including SPC, MMPR through Power Rangers Wild Force, VR Troopers, Masked Rider, and others that his company did as a 3rd party for DIC like Inspector Gadget and Super Mario Bros Super Show. So if Capcom wanted to liscense SPC, it would require rights from Tatsunoko for the original designs, rights from Disney for the show itself, and rights from Saban for the music. Anybody that has watched Disney’s version of PR will notice right off that even when old rangers came back like Adam in Power Rangers Operation Overdrive, none of the original music was used, now you know why.

    • daizyujin

I have seen a fan sub of the first episode, there is literally no line that is the same. You are right about the way it was dubbed, several of Saban’s guys have actually said as much in interviews. SPC is more close to a parody of the original than an actual localization of Teyande. Think something close to What’s Up Tiger Lilly or USA’s Night Flight dub of Dynaman.

    • Devonian

Supposedly they never even *got* scripts for the show, so they improvised as they went…

  • AliceNG

Ugh… Disney makes baby jesus cry. Then again it’s not JUST Disney, though they are most definitely one of the issues here – even though not mentioned. But seriously Diz don’t be a tease and just pay Saban some money for the music rights – we all know you have it stacked up in that overcrouded Vault of yours.
