SNK Arcade Classics 0 Keeps PlayStation 2 Alive

By Spencer . January 29, 2010 . 2:51pm

imageIn addition to Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love, PlayStation 2 might have another game to look forward to. SNK Arcade Classics 0 is also coming to the PS2.

Well, maybe. SNK still hasn’t announced SNK Arcade Classics 0, but the ESRB re-rated it as a PlayStation 2 and PSP title. The rating was previously listed Arcade Classics 0 only as a PSP game.

Expect a compilation of 20 arcade games. Search and Rescue is definitely in since it’s the reason why the game got rated M. The other 19 games are anyone’s guess, but the ESRB gives us some clues.

This is a collection of 20 classic arcade games comprising several distinct genres: action, fighting, sports (baseball, football, Olympics), shooting, platforming. Some games involve side-scrolling fighting action against hordes of enemy thugs, soldiers, and creatures; players can use knives, guns, flamethrowers, tanks, and grenades when engaging in the 2D-style combat.

More puzzling than the games is the publisher. Apparently, SNK is self publishing SNK Arcade Classics 0 in North America.

Don’t forget Aragorn’s Quest, that’s the last PS2 title I know of (if it actually comes out).

Oh my, I had forgot about that one. Will it have pointless Arwen fillers like the movie trilogy?

For the record, the original Playstation still received a port of Madden 2005, despite PS2 launching in the US October of 2000.

There will be “new” PS2 games for quite a few years, even if the class of 2013 is nothing but roster updates for old sports titles.

“players can use knives, guns, flamethrowers, tanks, and grenades when engaging in the 2D-style combat.”

Looks like they’re going to include atleast one Metal Slug title as Metal Slug is the one I can think of that allows you to do all of that. I can think of others that don’t involve a knife, though.

Those descriptions also apply to the Ikari Warriors series, one of SNK’s pre-Neo Geo flagships (maybe their most well known non-Neo Geo series). POW too, with the knives, guns, etc. And since this compilation supposedly focuses on pre-Neo stuff… I’d bet on POW and all three Ikari Warriors games making the cut.

I can’t wait for this to come out. I am definitely getting this. Come on SNK, when you gonna ship this??!!

PS2 and PSP only? What, did the Wii version of the first collection, which was the best version, sell horridly or something? I want a Wii version of this collection!

    • malek86

If VGC is to be trusted, the Wii version sold a lot less than the PS2 and PSP versions.

Or it’s also possible that they would rather have people buy these games off the VC at 900 points each. It’s probably the same reason why Sega hasn’t put their Megadrive collection on the Wii.

More likely the first option, the new collection is for snk arcade games made before the neo-geo, i.e games which arent on the VC…heres hoping it just hasnt been classified yet.

Hopefully, if this sells well enough, we’ll get to see KoF 2002 UM.
