The Last Story’s Theme Is…

The Last Story’s Theme Is…According to Nintendo’s conference, “the universal theme of human emotion” is a cornerstone for The Last Story. Nintendo says The Last Story will be new style of RPG.

Mistwalker confirmed The Last Story was the game Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi was blogging about for months. Right now, he’s working on balancing the battle system.

Nintendo plans to release The Last Story this year. Perhaps, sooner rather than later since Sakaguchi says, “production is near the final phase.”

Wow My wii is finally getting some more play time. I have been playing Tatsunoko and Sky Crawlers often. They have such a good line up.

  • Somato

“the universal theme of human emotion”
Could they have chosen a broader theme? I have a feeling that this game will either be very awesome, or very bad. Depending on the player.

  • Aoshi00

I'm glad this is on console and not handheld. Is this a Gooch-Uematsu collaboration again? If Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are any indication, I have a feeling this would blow FFXIII out of the water, and it won't take much.. the Wii is finally getting some playtime again w/ Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and this..

  • badmoogle

I'm really curious to see the first screenshots of this game.

  • MrMee

Wii 2010 releases and possible releases that I am interested in:
    Sky Crawlers
    No More Heroes 2
    Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom
    Fragile Dreams
    Xenoblade
    The Last Story
    Super Mario Galaxy 2
    Legend of Zelda
    Metroid: Other M
    Megaman 10 (multiplatform)

It's gonna be a good and expensive year for me. Getting married and Final Fantasy XIII don't help matters much. All around, very exciting year!

  • alundra311

    Monster Hunter Tri. :D

  • Yeshua49

    Tales of Graces.

  • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

If you're getting married (congratulations!), I would recommend Imagine: Babiez.

  • holyPaladin

    Seconded

  • Pesmerga00

I'm really looking forward to this. Mistwalker has put out some nice games, and I have faith the Gootch wont let me down.

A little disappointed it's not on PS3/Xbox. Although the Wii is a lot better than it being on a portable, and thank god it's not for the iPhone(like the last announcement).

Looks like the Wii is starting to fill in it's Rpg lineup.

“the universal theme of human emotion” wow, sounds like cry on has moved from 360 to the wii or something. I hope the premise (and goal) is a little more interesting than making you cry every 5 minutes. I laughed my head off when I heard cry on's purpose was to make its player cry. I also hope that Sakaguchi will realize that the times have changed and he needs to come up with something more innovating than LO, which, while a decent game, is a by the book RPG from the early 1990's with an uninspiring story. I mean seriously, this is 2010, not 1980's when he made the first final fantasy, what worked then is not going to cut it today. Anyways will keep an eye out for it but not holding my breath since his last two games haven't been spectacular (in gameplay or story)

  • http://terracannon876.livejournal.com Laura

Quite a lineup. I like =D And congrats on the marriage!

I think the others already listed the games that I'd get for this year.

“the universal theme of human emotion”
lol, it would be funny if it used the Wii vitallity sensor… ^_^

  • OidOid

Ewww, you sound like a NeoGAF post. (rolls eyes)

    Wait! I see no Sin & Punishment 2 on that list… o_o;

  • vrakanox

    Well, i'm certainly interested =]

  • badmoogle

Yup,the list is incomplete without it.:p

    And Tower of Shadow too!

  • http://www.yetikitn.com MelodyKitn

    Final Fantasy…
    The Last Story…
I'm waiting for RPG: The End, or something to that effect *giggle*

  • http://www.myanimelist.net/profile/Hraesvelgr Hraesvelgr

There isn't anything wrong with an RPG being “by the books” if it's done well. Unless you're talking about sales, then yeah, most people are only interested in “RPGs” these days.

Lost Odyssey did pretty well though, considering it was a new IP.

  • http://denpanosekai.blogspot.com denpanosekai

Have you not heard of End of Eternity??

  • 311

Glad I can dust my Wii cuz the only playtime it has gotten it has been with TvsC and No more Heroes 2, in 2009 I only played Muramasa.

  • MrMee

    (Update lol)
    Monster Hunter Tri
    Tales of Graces
Sin & Punishment 2 (can't believe I forgot to add this one)
    Not Imagine: Babiez

  • MrMee

lol thanks, but she is a natural born mother so when the time comes (a few years from now) I don't think we'll need anything from the Imagine lineup other than cooking (for me)

  • Aoshi00

    same here lol..

  • MrMee

    Thanks!

  • MrMee

I seriously can't believe I forgot this one. I've been waiting a while for this!

  • StealthKnight

It seems that everyone is saying that about this game. If people want this game then they will have to by a wii to enjoy it. People have done that with so many consoles in the past so I wonder what the big deal is now?

Actually the wii has had a good amount of rpg on it already. 16 the last time I counted which was a month ago. The majority of them are good ones too.

  • 311

I gave up on FF XIII the weapons trophies are a hassle, I cant seem to get the necessary items to create the final weapons and some accessories im missing, after I read that SE developers considered that Towns were too much trouble for the HD console (BS IMO) I really think Ill view FF XIII versus as a maybe. from here to august there are a lot of games Ill be busy with like: End Of Eternity, White Knight Chronicles, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, Quantum, God Of War 3, Metroid: Other M, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable

  • OidOid

The whole Wii collecting dust thing is getting old, yet, people still keep say it. Here's a list of wii games that i purchased and played in 2009.

Wii Sports Resort, A Boy and His Blob, Rune Factory Frontier, Little King's Story, Klonoa of the Wind: Door to Phantomile, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, MadWorld, Sin and Punishment: Sora no Kōkeisha, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, Punch-Out!!, Metroid Prime: Trilogy, Let's Tap, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Overlord: Dark Legend, Phantom Brave: We Meet Again, Cursed Mountain, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Wii Fit Plus, Rabbids Go Home, EA Sports Active, Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon, ANNO: Create a New World, Ghostbusters: The Video Game, Boom Blox Bash Party, Excitebots: Trick Racing, The Munchables, New Play Control! Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, New Play Control! Pikmin, New Play Control! Chibi-Robo!, New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis, Dead Space Extraction, House of the Dead: Overkill and a ton of WiiWare games which i won't list.

  • Jaxx-Leviathan

Whoa, this has become a List-Your-Games-thread. I know what you played last summer (*groan* bad pun…)! Weee, human emotions! This IS a Nintendo FF-sumthin'-sumthin'! Plus Sakaguchi has his god-hands fondling this clay of awesomeness! Weee! *runs up the walls and ceiling*

  • 311

I understand your point here and you are right but to me I really dont use the console that much, I bought Muramasa when it came out and that was it, this month I got MadWorld,T vs C, FF:CC. Since I bought the console I only have bought like 12 games and that is including WiiWare games. I know lots of people have their preferences when it comes to a favorite console and their games but not me i have all 3 and wii has disappointed me and the family so we barely use it, it doesnt mean that Im hating on the console and I know that there are a lot of good games for the console but very few we like because if the game is or was released in another console I have to see why Id prefer the Wii version than another console. Now Last Story and Xenoblade are in my interested list Ill just have to wait and see

  • malek86

People just like to complain. Remember all the RE5 bickering?

  • Aoshi00

Well, it's personal preference really. If you only have the Wii, then certainly you would play all the good games it has to offer to get the most out of the system. But some people have 5 systems (3 consoles and 2 portables) and only a limited amount of time to play, so sometimes it takes just the right games to push me to turn on that system. Muramasa was one, Sin and Punishment and Mad World were also, had a blast w/ friends w/ NSMB. Klonoa I played a little and sold it, I have the metal case Metroid Prime trilogy but haven't a chance to open it yet. Haven't played Extraction because I didn't finish Dead Space yet. I bought FF CBCC and TvsC still in shrinkwrap. I even got the Black Wii for Disaster Day of Crisis, Fragile, Arc Rise Fantasia, and Another Code R. But other than that, I don't feel like turning on either Wiis. They are actually not “collecting dust” because I put a piece of cloth on both of them like people do cars :)

Same for my PS3, it has countless great games on it, but I mostly play my 360 for multiplatform titles and use the PS3 more as a blu-ray player since I watch lots of movies. Heavy Rain would definitely make me play a lot.

So for the upcoming Wii games, I'm looking forward to Sin & Punishment 2, the Last Story, and Metroid Other M. Other than those, I'm only mildly interested in the other titles. Not dissing the Wii, I have almost 50 games for it, but I just happen to prefer my 360.

The run up the walls part reminded me of that The Simpsons episode where Lisa wants to dance tap, and gets some shoes that um, tap, but they tap to the rhythm by themselves, and at some point people applaud(I think), so she dances like a mad-woman and ends up running up the wall incredibly fast, so funny :D.

Oh and I replied to mistwalker on Twitter, and I also gave Mr. Sakaguchi a surfing sopt, but they told me he didn't have time to surf, he has to work, boo hoo.
    :(.
    :).

  • http://www.yetikitn.com MelodyKitn

Actually, I haven't! Hee-hee, it does tickle me silly these titles that never end, or seemingly do.

  • galacticgalaxy

I'v been following Hironobu Sakaguchi & Mistwalker since Lost Odyssesy's release- I was actually penning for a sequel reincarnation (Final Fantasy style, new setting, characters etc.) but “The Last Story” seems to be in a simmilar vein.

I had so many expectations for Mistwalkers next game, i hope they will be able to live up to at least some of them.

I'm a little dissapointed the game won't be on Xbox360, but I agree the the Wii needs more RPG attention- It could go two ways. I keep my fingers crossed it turns out okay.

Also, was I the only one hoping Yoshitaka Amano would work with Mistwalker on their new game? I had a feeling it could happen, maybe in the future…

  • malek86

If you have fifty games for the Wii and still prefer the 360, just how many 360 games do you have?

  • Aoshi00

I wish this would've been on 360 too, but I'm still happy it's on console and at least not on DS or iphone.. Yea, w/ Amano, Uematsu, and Sakaguchi, it would be them making fun games like FFs again, unlike FF11-14, VS13, etc. So far I've liked most of the Mistwalker stuffs like BD, ASH, and Lost Odyssey. Someone still knows and is willing to make fun RPGs.

  • Aoshi00

lol.. I guess that's a lot of games for a system that I don't even play. There are some purchases I regret making, in general I just buy way too many games than I have time to play, let alone beating. *check drawer* I have..

    ~47 games on Wii
    ~63 games for 360
    ~33 games for PS3 (~50 blu-ray movies)
tons of DS games (maybe around 100) I left on the way side, and about 3 dozen PSP games. I buy/collect so much crap…

  • galacticgalaxy

    Yes! Your absolutely right~
I think a lot of people skimmed over the fact that Sakaguchi was poking fun at the Final Fantasy franchise with Lost Odysessy, but yet the game had entirely a charm of its own. I'd like for The Last Story to do something simmilar, or even have subtle references to past FF titles- that would be pretty interesting.

I know a lot of people are whining in complaint about the prospect of the new game's battle system being a standard turn-based format, but I actualy hope it will be. I think that added to the nostalgia factor of Lost Odysessy- and made the game feel authentic. The changes SQE have made to the FF battle systems over the recent years are probably one of the reasons that the newest games have felt somewhat hollow and 'un-FF-like'.

I'm not saying I want this new Mistwalker title to be another FF clone, but I am saying I want something that has that traditional Sakaguchi style and feeling in every inch of the story and gameplay.

The past few months I have been googling “Yoshitaka Amano working with Mistwalker” over and over in hopes that he might join forces with Sakaguchi once again, could you imagine his artwork fully animated in a game like his 1001 Nights short animated pieces? it would be truely gorgeous! gosh- I hope Amano gets back into the fold of making character designs once again..
