Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles Sales Off To A Slow Start

By Spencer . February 1, 2010 . 10:26am

imageWhile Mega Man EXE: Operate Shooting Star and Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth performed to Capcom’s expectations, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles did not.

In their latest financial report, Capcom said Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles and the Wii version of Okami “saw slow sales.” Japan got the Wii version of Okami at the end of October and it sold 24,000 units its first week. Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles was released here in November.

Since this comment is about Capcom’s third fiscal quarter The Darkside Chronicles was not released in Japan yet. In its first week of sales, The Darkside Chronicles moved 73,000 units.

Just goes to show Capcom that Wii owners don’t want another rail shooter RE or ports, but a new full fledged game instead. Hope Capcom learns a lesson from this loss.

Didn’t they try that with Zack and Wiki? Did that title sell well?

      • To be fair, Z&W was a marketing disaster. I’m glad Darkside Chronicles is doing well for them in Japan (look for a feature on it soon-ish) but they need to stop putting out stuff like Spyborgs and DSC that wouldn’t sell anywhere else and expecting it to work wonders on a system that requires a “safer” approach.

It worked out about as well as when Capcom would launch a niche new IP on PS2, Xbox or Gamecube. Like God Hand, Under the Skin, Gotcha Force, Viewtiful Joe, PN03, auto modellista, Steel Batallion, Maximo, Crimson Tears, Killer 7, Everblue, Okami, Shadow of Rome, Haunting Ground, Glass Rose, Group S Challenge, Chaos Legion, etc, etc.

That or to change the type of game they make on the Wii. Seriously, though nothing against the wii but I can’t imagine playing RE6 on the wii (which will look worse than RE5).

    • They don’t have to make a RE6 or whatnot for the Wii, just a competent game with RE in mind, which is what I think they tried to do here.
It would have been fine if they actually improved on the game from Umbrella Chronicles, but not really. I’m not sure how many people here played it, but there were parts of the game that just bugged the heck out of me, mostly those long durations where nothing happens. For a rail-shooter, that’s just crazy to me. And it happens quite a few times. It’s a fun game when you get into it, but even for a rail-shooter/RE fan, it just fell short for me.

So, they don’t have to make a RE6 for the Wii, but maybe something like it or try to bring the Outbreak back games on it. Or not, I don’t know. There are so many RE games that I loved and loathed, they’re a major hit or miss for me. Always been that way.

      • How about a Dino Crisis 4 in the style of RE4 Wii??? :)

News flash: on-rails shooters are a niche type of game.
