This Week In Imports: Pop’n Star Ocean

Star Ocean: The Last Hope hits the PlayStation 3 this week. Will the year old game fare better on Sony’s console?

Not before God Eater from Namco Bandai tries to take a bite out of its sales. The PSP game has been heavily marked with a massive demo and plenty of magazine coverage. In the midst of those heavy hitters, a new Kunio-Kun sports game with little press hits stores too. Poor Arc System Works.

WKC and SO4 for me this week. From here through the next ~3 months there’s a huge flood of games coming out and I just know I’m not going to be able to touch all of them. I still haven’t even gotten around to Darksiders and Glory of Heracles yet, not to mention Ar tonelico 3 is sitting there tempting me to play it.

  • Can’t wait next week to pick up Star Ocean: The Last Hope International as for WKC I may give it a rent and see how it is.

  • Soma

Man, I would love to be picking up White Knight Chronicles this week, but will have to wait.
Also, I’m hoping that Star Ocean will fare better on the PS3. I think that it may, since PS3 gamers seem to be more RPG oriented. Just from what I’ve noticed.

    • Indeed you have to remember how saturated the PS2 was with RPGs just gotta wait till PS3 start getting lots of them.

      • Soma

        Totally. =3
Though, I don’t like to think of it as saturation. Just a greater amount of choice.

    • Vino (Tim N)

I find it weird how a lot of the really good RPG’s have started on 360 first and all eventually get ported to the PS3. Why don’t they just start with the PS3 next time?

      • Soma

I totally agree, Tim. Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia, etc.
They should have just been released on the PS3 simultaneously. I’m not really a huge fan of timed exclusives.
Also, I still have my fingers crossed that we’ll see a North American release of ToV on the PS3.

Yeah me too, I just can’t believe how lame Bamco has become. The funny thing is they blame low sales as one of the reasons for not bringing more Tales games over but how is it the PS3’s fault that 360 owners dont buy enough copies? If they had just released it on PS3 to begin that would not have happened.

I just dont get it last gen Namco was great but after the merger things just got strange. Timed exclusives and then when they do port the games they leave people wondering if it will ever get released outside of Japan.

          • Soma

Well they have publishing contracts with certain companies, so they have to honor those. But it certainly is frustrating as a PS3 owner when the 360 is getting all of these awesome timed exclusives and I have to wait (or hope) for a PS3 release. =/

I just hope WKC is enough of an RPG for me. I am worried its all fluff tucked into an MMORPG. Its not the battle system I worry about as I liked FF12 and .hack’s but I just hope there is enough story. Star Ocean should be great, especially with no annoying game freezing bug.

      • Soma

I think that WKC should be pretty awesome. Level 5 has never let me down in the past. Then again, I’ve really only played a couple of their games. Last one being Rogue Galaxy, but that game was awesome.

WKC, Last rebellion, Heavy Rain and SO4: International for me this month. My wallet is :(

  • Just Star Ocean for me this month. March, however… Fragile, Yakuza 3, Pokemon Heart Gold, Sakura Wars(PS2 version), Lunar, and Mimana Iyar Chronicles…I can’t remember a time when I bought so much games in one month…This year is going to put me on the streets, with all these games.

  • thebanditking

I just can’t decide what to start next, and I want to play an RPG. WKC is coming out today, SO4 next week but I really want to play FFXIII and with that onyl a month away there is no way I could finish either WKC or SO4 in time (plus I dont want to rush those games). Curses!

Personally I think Star Ocean will have sales around 150,000-300,000. The PSP ports of the original two games were not well received in Japan and hit the bargain bins within weeks. I get the impression that it’s just not a series gamers here really care about, especially not when there are so many other games releasing around the same time period. Though I do think the decision to release it on the 360 was a major cause of the low sales.
