Linked In Resume Says “Final Fantasy XIV For PC, PS3, And Xbox 360″

By Spencer . February 2, 2010 . 11:20am

imageAt this past E3, Square Enix said Final Fantasy XIV would launch on PlayStation 3 and PCs. Looks like an Xbox 360 version is in development too.

A staffer at Square Enix Japan let the proverbial chocobos out of the stable. In her Linked In profile she notes Final Fantasy XIV is a PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 title. Whoops! An Xbox 360 version hasn’t been announced yet. Honest mistake or a slip of the tongue?

Akama also says there are lines currently working on The 3rd Birthday and Final Fantasy Agito XIII too.

Didn’t they say the only reason they haven’t announced the 360 version is because they’re having trouble with MS and their online structure?

    • Ereek

I heard that rumor too. I don’t know if we’ll ever know for certain.

    • SlashZaku

This and as mentioned below, Sony emphasized that PS3 would be the only ‘console’ in ’2010′ where you’d be able to play ‘XIV’. So I’d expect to hear about the 360 version in 2011.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

I remember reading that before. I wonder, and this is total speculation, if this has to do with cross platform play. If Square Enix makes an Xbox 360 version they probably want everyone on the same servers.

      • SlashZaku

MS just seems to have random issues with MMOs. They canned Level-5′s MMO on the original Xbox, they canned the Marvel MMO this gen, and I can’t remember the other developer aside from SE that said MS had to be negotiated with/talked to about working out all the details of getting their MMO on the console.

Cross-platform play is questionable as well. PSU I believe had PS2 and PC users on the same servers but not 360 users whereas FFXI had everyone playing together.

  • BK0000

At Sony’s E3 presentation, they said the PS3 would be the only console it would be available on at LAUNCH. That doesn’t mean it won’t come to the 360 eventually.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Agreed and this linked in profile suggests its in development now.

  • badmoogle

Can’t say i’m surprised.I’m sure that Versus will also end up on 360 at some point.

    • Raiyu

Kinda doubt that. SE promised that Versus will remain a PS3 exclusive. So I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

      • MrMee

I wonder if 360 will get it’s own exclusive like Versus. Square Enix did state that the FF XIII franchise would extend beyond XIII, Versus XIII, and Agito XIII.

        • badmoogle

I think it will depend on how well FFXIII will sell.Wada said prior to FFXIII’s release in Japan that they expect worldwide sales to reach the 6 million mark something that i seriously doubt will happen any time soon (if ever.)

          • Ereek

I think it will hit 5 million no problem, 6 million a bit later. It’s already sold around 2 (The last official number I heard was 1.8 ) in Japan alone. Despite what you read on message boards and some of these news sites with the “hate” on FF being the new in-thing, they don’t represent FF fans as a whole. No one site, or group of sites does.

          • Aoshi00

For every other FF (except Online XI & MMO-esque XII), I would say the “hate” is biased. But FFXIII is truly subpar, in terms of being a main title for the FF series, or just an RPG in general. Even the most objective gamer or most avid PS3 fan would say that FFXIII could be much much much better I bet, because it just felt so incomplete. And for those who finally bought a PS3 solely for playing XIII, I would say there’s a 80% chance they feel disappointed.

          • Kris

In response to Aoshi, I’ve heard the widest range of opinions on FFXIII, it’s crazy. I know you loathed it, but I’ve also heard people say it ranks up among their favorites (albeit their favorites include VIII). Strangely enough, it makes me more fascinated than ever to play the game, just to have an opinion on it.

          • David Macphail

You’re joking, right? The game has sold nearly 2 million copies in Japan already. FF XIII will probably reach 6 million for the PS3 version alone. Nobody really expects the 360 version to sell well but the PS3 will more than make up the numbers.

          • Hraesvelgr

Four million more on PS3 alone? Unlikely. Maybe combined with the 360 version (which will have lower sales imo), but on its own, unlikely, I think.

And if nobody expects the 360 version to sell well, they’re pretty delusional.

          • jarrodand

No, Wada said 10 million worldwide. He said lowered sales in Japan would be made up in the west.

Then again, Wada also said DQIX would sell 5m in Japan and it looks to have stalled out around 4.2m. Though the quick budget rerelease last week may push it.

        • David Macphail

I highly doubt that. The 360 is struggling to keep exclusives as it is. Given the terrible sales of games like Star Ocean: The Last Hope and The Last Remnant i think the last thing Squeenix will want to do is make a 360 exclusive Final Fantasy, no matter how much money Microsoft offer.

          • Hraesvelgr

Final Fantasy is a totally different game from Star Ocean and Last Remnant. Final Fantasy has name power, even in North America, where JRPGs are hated.

      • http://www.facebook.com/mario.hurlock Mario Hurlock

well they say a promise is a comfort to a fool (ff13)

      • badmoogle

It has nothing to do with “raising my hopes up”.:pI don’t own a 360 and i don’t plan to buy one in the future either.
It’s just common sense judging by Square Enix’s recent history with “exclusive” games.People should know better than to trust their promises (same goes for every other 3rd party developer in this generation)
Even if they have a contract with Sony they will be very happy to break it (and pay the according indemnifications) if the money thrown by MS are good enough.

    • SlashZaku

As long as Nomura has a say, it’s unlikely. He told his development team to develop Versus with only the PS3 in mind. He was supposedly pissed as well about XIII going multiplatform so I don’t think Wada is going to overstep Nomura, especially since Nomura and Kitase already have issues with him.

      • Hraesvelgr

        Isn’t Nomura a PS3 fanboy? I rest my case.

        • SlashZaku

That’s the word supposedly. I know in one interview, he talked up the power of the PS3 (not sure if it was for XIII itself or Versus) and said it allowed them to create what they needed to.

    • David Macphail

Hate to break it to you but Versus XIII development is being optimised for the PS3′s cell processor. Which means it falls into the same category as many PS3 exclusives – the Xbox 360 isn’t powerful enough to run it.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will remain a PS3 exclusive.

      • Hraesvelgr

Didn’t they pretty much say the same thing about FFXIII, though? And please don’t do the “360 isn’t powerful enough”, because each is crappier than the other in one way or another. If you were talking PC, I could see it, though.

        • David Macphail

Well Hideo Kojima himself said that the 360 wasn’t strong enough to handle MGS4 and, from what i’ve seen, Versus XIII looks to be graphically superior to MGS4. If the 360 can’t run MGS4 i highly doubt it can run something that’s more advanced than MGS4.

          • Aoshi00

Have we seen any actual in-game footages other than pre-rendered FMVs for XIII Versus? Since XIII was quite lackluster w/ its story, I hope Versus would do a better job, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up w/ its VII Turks-like cast. MGS4 was very good in every aspect since Kojima was demanding w/ the game’s final quality, S-E should learn a thing or two from him instead of only depending on brand recognition.

          • Slashlen

IIRC, one of the trailers had a very long scene with the main character and the girl talking that wasn’t pre-rendered.

          • Aoshi00

Yeah, I remember that one, shown behind closed door in a S-E party (like the main guy is supposed to be a prince and the girl a princess from a different country, or something..), I forgot if it was pre-rendered or real-time, but I would hardly call that impossible to port to 360.. I hope the story would make some sense instead of just all style.

  • MrMee

Yay, I’m looking forward to XIV as I loved XI during the 6 months I played it.

  • http://www.moonengine.tumblr.com COSMOS

Wasn’t the original tech demo for XIV presented to Microsoft? so I would not be surprised in the slightest if an Xbox360 version cropped up.

  • Aoshi00

Sigh, why does Uematsu have to score FF Online 2 out of all FFs.. I think he could’ve contributed a lot to FFXIII’s soundtrack working w/ Hamauzu, like FFX. At any rate, MMO is just not for me after playing 2 months of FFXI on PS2, no time to concentrate on FF Warcrack XIV.

    • Ereek

I’d make an argument that a lot of Uematsu’s compositions are the weaker compositions in FFXI. Not that they’re bad, but I think most of them are simply underwhelming and I prefer Mizuta. In that sense, I agree that Uematsu isn’t really the best for the MMOs, but I think they’re using him simply because he’s the “franchise favorite,” so to speak. For example, Uematsu’s Distant Worlds is “okay,” but it’s sung in English by a singer who obviously can’t speak the language.

Oh, and don’t insult FFXI by putting it in the same league as WoW!

      • Aoshi00

Wait, so FFXI was not a game that needs to be played day in and day out for years, requiring a huge investment of time plus monthly fee? I simply said MMO, a la WoW, is not my kind of game. Yeah, maybe I’m insulting it, why are FF Online I & II being called FF XI and the XIV anyway? They are diff. games just like Crystal Chronicles, Tactics, etc.Instead of playing one single game for 5 yrs, I would prefer playing all the other games, and not being limited to play in a certain time to lvl up w/ parties and such. In that sense, XII was the solution. Not too familiar w/ Uematsu’s work in XI either since I only played it for 2 months and called it quits, while I did enjoy on some lvl and could certainly see the appeal, MMO just felt more like a chore to me, like after a day of work and force myself to play it because of not wanting to waste the monthly fees.I said I wish he would be involved in FFXIII’s soundtrack because it doesn’t have as much variety as in X which had 3 composers including him and Hamauzu, since FFXIII uses a surprisingly high number of remixes. Also I loved his work in Lost Odyssey (FF-like) and Anata wo Yurusanai (jazz and fusion), and he remains one of my favorite and most diverse composers. Regardless of how underwhelming FFXIII and its soundtrack felt, I still ordered the soundtrack.Maybe it’s something I feel like listening to instead of playing the game.

Ok ive bene playing FF11 for like 3 years now , yes it is time consuming , but you dont really have to play everyday if you dont want to «« its not an obligation , i do it for fun , for instance i stopped playing in november cause i was playign dragon Age non stop , and in december i payed and went back to play it and everythign was fine ! XD And no i too dont like wow being compared to FF11 cause they are MMo’s is true but of all MMO’s i played FF11 is the most diferent and chaleging ( sometimes to the point on insanity XD)AND CUTE! T__T i love cute stuff XD ! this and yes i like that in FF11 everybody can play being it on Ps2 / Pc or 360 … and i dont mind FF14 coming for 360 too unless the PS3 version suffers for it ! XD i Play my FF11 on Pc , i tried it on 360 but the grafics were to low «« and you cant change … for 14 ill have both Ps3 and PC ^_^ !wireless precious controler Ftw XD !

          • Aoshi00

sry, no offense to FFXI or MMO players, just that I could never fit playing MMO into my schedule. I totally get what you’re saying, playing w/ friends on quests could be fun (I assume that’s why Monster Hunter is so popular), the time needed is just very daunting and near impossible for me. The obligation part just comes from the fees, like if I only play it several time a month, I would feel I waste the subscription. It’s like me w/ cable, I cancelled it altogether because I rarely have time to watch TV and I would feel stupid paying $50 a month for nothing, and there are other outlets to read news.

        • Ereek

I was actually joking with the FFXI comment. It was mainly a reference to the fact that the end-game WoW community and the end-game FFXI community generally don’t like each other.

          • Aoshi00

I don’t get that sometimes, it’s like gamers bashing anime fans and cosplayers, and vice versa.. or sci-fi fans thinking they’re superior, these are all geeky hobbies, can’t people just get along.. or like ebert thinking movies are better than games as art.. I love movies and games equally. I still think MMOs are kind of scary though, that some people could play it for years on end, even though the community is fun. It’s like facebook addict or something..

          • http://pt-pt.facebook.com/people/Lyh-Scully/613703032 Lyh Scully

Lol XD , i think everyone should play the MMo they like , i just sometimes get angry cause most people play wow and they come bashing me cause i play FFXI, saying that i should play cause Wow is best , i say FFXI is best for me XD, so yes it does ticle me when someone puts it on the same bag XD sorry!
oh yes aoshi MMos are scary …. id never tought id play FFIX for this long ……..
dont play mmos keep safe XD !

    • Hraesvelgr

I think I’ll avoid FFXIV like the plague based solely on the fact that FFXI was a pain to play after getting 10 or so levels. I got up to around level 50 before I got sick of it, though there were numerous other problems with the game, including the community.

  • http://twitter.com/RyanB28 Ryan Bennett

Oh right. Because it said Xbox 360, it MUST be in development for it. I remember when Left 4 Dead 2 and Mass Effect 2 were listed on some sites, including EA’s for ME2 as on the PS3. Did those 2 games go to the PS3? NO.

Basically, don’t get your hopes up too much. All games get rumoured to go onto another console at some point before the game is out. I remember when some sites were saying Uncharted 2 would be on the 360. That’s laughable, because Sony owns Naughty Dog!!
