    Ugh. Gamestop-only pre-order bonuses.

    • Kunio_kun

      Amazon > Gamestop

      Anywhere > Gamestop

  • I really dislike these retailer specific bonuses. I pre-ordered this game from Amazon months ago, why can’t at least all major retailers get these bonuses?

    Very disappointing Xseed.

    • Probably has something to do with Gamestop only willing to stock these kinds of games in return for some kind of exclusive deal. Not that I have any inside info, mind you…just that that’s what seems most likely.

      • nyoron

I’ve heard that before as well. The Targets and Walmarts of the world would almost never carry something like Fragile, and Gamestop agreeing to stock it would probably be the game’s best chance for wide exposure. Though knowing why they do it still doesn’t mean I condone the practice. If only publishers would somehow band together and stand up against Gamestop’s tyranny…

In this case I’m grateful for Xseed choosing to do a soundtrack, which out of all possible types of bonus items is the easiest to find elsewhere, should I feel the need.

        • Yea, something I’ve learnt is that, very often, publishers have to make decisions they dislike as much as we do, for reasons that are never made public. That said…I don’t really like soundtrack CDs as a bonus anymore. I’ll always appreciate a good artbook more, but I understand that’s hard to do when it’s not as easy to communicate with the original development team.

      • Doesn’t explain why they can’t give it to Amazon as well. They are clearly putting the game in their stock.

        • Aoshi00

As much as I hate missing the bonus since I order from Amazon too, from a business of view it makes sense though.. like Magna Carta 2, I wouldn’t have gotten it on day 1 if not for GS’s artbook, so they got my $60+tax right there instead of me getting it on sale later. I don’t know if it makes a difference to them if I buy from GS or Amazon..

The Gamestop pre-order “bonus” I regret getting the most was for Raiden IV, a stingy stupid looking pdf file that was supposed to be a mini gallery/guide, that was NOT worth the extra $10..

I hope the FFXIII 360 bundle would be available on Amazon though, being forced to get it from GS would suck. I still need to know where the Lightning faceplate is coming from, they’re being so secretive…

  • nyoron

I can do without the soundtrack, but for a minute I thought the extra game features were also Gamestop exclusive. I was about to nerd rage harder than ever before.

But yeah, boo this Gamestop exclusive preorder crap.

  • TurkeyPotPie

Heh, as I was writing up this post, both Ereek and Chris Taran replied with parts of my very first sentence: “Ugh” and “really dislike retailer specific bonuses”. Guess a lot of people feel that way.

    • I understand that, I don’t shop at GS myself for my own reasons, either, but what I don’t understand is that the focus is on the item rather than the game. Is there a reason to complain about a *bonus* item like this?

Here’s an idea; take the money you save from getting it at another retailer (maybe add a few bucks) and look it up on eBay, or I’m sure there are other options and methods out there.

Come on. I put my agenda aside ’cause I know there are -a lot- of people out there where a retailer like GS is their only option. As much as I dislike certain policies and practices they do, these shops provide a service that outweigh the negative in this respect. If XSeed or X-company wants to throw a bone their way, it should be fine. There isn’t really a reason to rain on their parade.

  • MrRobbyM

Seriously? I;m going to have to go to GAMESTOP? Wonderful.

    • Hraesvelgr

      You don’t have to, no.

  • Guest

Are you guys really complaining? I mean you miss out on this incomplete soundtrack but XSEED brought this over with reversible covers, original VA and neat little in game extras. Im VERY happy this is coming here at all and they seem to have done a great job with localization and the content brought over. Im couldn’t be anymore excited.

    • pedrron

I’m with you man, XSEED put a lot of love into this and people bitch about not being able to get the pre-order bonus from their preferred retailer? I understand that Gamestop is not the ideal place (Amazon is the best since I don’t have to pay taxes and cheaper by $3 bucks) but at least be happy that they even decided to add the soundtrack as a bonus.

      • Ereek

I prefer not to support GameStop because I do not like their policies. And, as nyoron implied, Capitalism is all about speaking with your money. I don’t want XSEED to do exclusive bonuses again, therefore I won’t buy it from GameStop. That’s not saying I won’t get the game, of course.

It’s not about a “preferred retailer” for me at all. It’s called economics.

        • It seems silly to me.
But, hey, to each their own.

          • How does this seem silly to you? Gamestop exclusives are one of the worst things game companies have been doing. Half the time even when you do pre-order with Gamestop you still don’t get your pre-order bonus. Gamestop is a horrible place all around, I don’t know how any informed person shops there.

          • Well, it seems to work, though, and quite well. It’s a game big outlet that gets most types of games out there, from the niche to the hyped, and the way I see it the more the accessible they are to people the better, it’s not just about being informed. Even if that were the case, you either bite the bullet or move on.
Like in my reply to TurkeyPotPie, I’m aware of the crazy things GameStop does that I don’t want to be a part of (like you mentioned, the exclusives that you’re aren’t guaranteed to get even when you pre-order), but if a company wants to do exclusives with them or whoever that should be fine.
The focus is on the game, right? Not in this instance, it seems, which is a shame since it looks like a really interesting one that could bring up some good discussions. That’s what seems silly to me. It could have been a pack of balloons, that dancing pig in the screen up there or a purple rock that would have came with the game, it doesn’t make much of a difference or at least worth having a ruckus over. It’s just whack to me, man, and I see it all over.

Maybe that’s just me. I’m not hung up at all about bonuses or exclusives like this. As cool as some really are, I can live without all of them. The only thing I want to keep and call an exclusive is the feeling I get when I’m playing a really good game.

    • nyoron

You’re absolutely right. Who are we to let them know we don’t like something? Their main customer base? Pfft. Just smile and hand over your cash, rite?

    • I don’t see how you can’t understand that complaining about an exclusive pre-order bonus and being happy about a game being localized are 2 completely separate things. Most of the people upset about the exclusive have also mentioned that they’ve already pre-ordered the game.

So yes, I’m really complaining. Has no effect on my desire for and happiness that it’s coming to this region.

  • Do we know for sure if the cover is reversible?

    • Yes it is. It has the original Japanese art on the inside.

      • <3

More publishers need to invest in reversible covers! The first time I really appreciated this was when Capcom (not exactly reversible) put up high-res PDFs for Okami on Wii, after that IGN watermark fiasco.

  • Aoshi00

I don’t mind my local Gamestop, the people who work there now are actually decent, but I just use Amazon for the free shipping, 3-5% discount, & no tax. sometimes the diff. in price is pretty big for an expensive game. well, I guess for ~$6.50 extra, the CD is totally worth it. But the game is certainly not worth $50, hate to say it….

Tempting bonus, having played the Jpn ver I was going to wait till price drop to pick this up, I think I should hold my urges..

I have to say this and FFXIII were the most disappointing to me. This has decent story and excellent presentation but bad gameplay while FFXIII, well, was just lackluster in most aspects that make a good RPG… both games had potential to be much better…

    • Wow, I totally missed that this was $50. Uh oh… :(

  • StealthKnight

I hope it does well enough so other games will be brought over. Xseed has done a good amount for us. I wonder if they will sell the full soundtrack at a latter date

  • Hraesvelgr

I don’t mind Gamestop’s online site (for the most part), aside from the fact that they will pack your game up to a week before it ships, which means you absolutely cannot cancel it under any circumstances.

However, I will never deal with their offline stores because they haven’t got a clue about anything most of the time. After the ridiculousness I had to deal with with them and Tales of Vesperia, I just gave up on them.

  • Wha? they changed the boxart? I thought they were using the Japanese boxart? Not that i’m complaining because the new boxart still looks just as good.

    • Hraesvelgr

      The cover is reversible.

      • Ooo, that’s pretty awesome. Thanks for the info!

  • Joanna

gah, why is everything being released in March? :/ I don’t think I will be able to pick this up right away.
