Today, Fl0w Is Free On PSN

By Spencer . February 13, 2010 . 3:04am

imageHave a PlayStation 3? Then you can download Fl0w for free. Fire up a PSN account registered in the USA or Canada, click on the make.believe icon, and then download Fl0w.

Thatgamecompany made Flower and Fl0w, a relaxing game where tilt control moves a hungry microorganism. The game usually costs $7.99. Right now it will cost you nothing until 12AM EST / 9PM PST when the promotion ends.

Unfortunately when i try to download it from my fake U.S. account (i’m in Europe) i get a server error message.D:

    Ok,i re-read Spencer’s post…it’s only for accounts registered in US/Canada…damn

    • malek86

Me too. However, I’ve still added it to my download list, so I can download it at a later time. Let’s see if tomorrow it works.

      • http://twitter.com/mrchan Kelvin Chan

        Actually, the Store says:

“fl0w must be downloaded from the PlayStation Store to the PS3 system before 9:00 PM PST on February 13, 2010. If product download does not occur before this time or if the product is deleted from the PS3 system, it will not be available again without purchase. Available to residents of the United States and Canada only.”

So you can’t procrastinate and just put it on your list.
You still have 6 hours and 44 minutes.

      Sorry for the double post.

For people outside the US, I saw this posted on another blog and it is purported to work. Fisrt create a US PSN account then:

      Step 1

Go to the Settings option in the XMB on the PS3. Select Network Settings. Press “X” for Internet Connection Settings.

      Step 2

Select the Yes option if currently connected to the Internet. If you are not connected, this option is unavailable.

      Step 3

Highlight the Custom option with the d-pad. Press the Right button on the controller. Select Auto-Detect and push “Right” again. Choose the Automatic IP setting and press “Right” to continue. Select “Do Not Set” on the DHCP host name screen. Push “Right” three times.

      Step 4

Push the Down key to select Use on the Proxy Server screen.

      Step 5

      Insert the proxy: 66.90.92.61
      Port: 8080

      Step 6

Go to US PS Store and download free flOw.

  • vall03

well, reading the thread from neogaf, it seems the download is restricted to NA ip address and whats a bit disappointing is that the free download is only available for the ps3… :( I want to get it for the PSP…

    • malek86

Oh sure. Europe is Sony’s biggest territory in sales, and that’s how they show their appreciation. Awesome.

      • http://twitter.com/mrchan Kelvin Chan

I wouldn’t say they’re snubbing Europe: this is probably a Sony USA or SCEA initiative, and it’s not really the AMERICAN division’s fault that there’s no promotion somewhere OUTSIDE their responsibility. Though maybe they should consider some better coordination to avoid this type of response.

        • Ereek

          This.
SCEA, SCEJ, and SCEE are all different beasts all under the same name. They have different policies and different events. You can’t really blame SCEA for this.

          • malek86

I know, but just like for Nintendo, that’s exactly the problem. They need to be more coordinated. MS seems to do a (relatively) better job at organizing things in all regions – or at least US and EU – simultaneously. Why can’t they?

I forever hate region restricting in gaming in all its forms (mmos, consoles, downloads, etc…)

  • Kunio_kun

Downloading now, thanks for the heads-up Spencer. Hopefully this free game is better than when they gave Rag Doll Kung-fu out for free, ‘cuz that game wasn’t worth it even if they had paid me to play it…

    • Aoshi00

Cool, d/l’ing now too. I think I actually bought this before a long time ago and don’t remember it had trophies back then, guess they patched it now, which is great since it was kind of boring before w/o at least some goals, it’s much more fun this way.

Yeah I agree, Rag Doll Kung Fu is not worth playing even if it was free.

      • Ereek

        @kunio_kun a well as Aoshi

Flow is not going to be for everyone, but for those who enjoy it, it’s great. Flower on the other hand, feels a good deal more polished and definitely has wider appeal. My suggestion is simply not to turn the PS3 off after 5 minutes of playing. You’ll get used to the controls as you figure out what you’re supposed to do.

        • Aoshi00

Actually that’s what happened, I bought Flow a long time ago, played for maybe 10 mins or so and just didn’t know what I was supposed to do or where I was supposed to go, other than just floating around and eating microbes. Today I just played w/ it for over hour, had a blast w/ it and beat it. I finally “got” it. Plus the added trophies added some more objectives one can work toward for replay value. Maybe it’s the dual shock 3 feeling better than the lighter original sixaxis controller as well because I remember the tilting was a little frustrating before (and thought I wasted money on the game). Flower was also fun, at $5 it was just right, but $10 feels a bit expensive, but should still be tried by all.

EDIT: I know why it feels better now, the force feedback :)!

    Sweet! Off to download~

  • Aoshi00

Not to sound like a penny pincher, but Sony should reimburse those who’ve paid for it before w/ a free d/l of another PSN game. Nintendo did it for the people who “bought” the internet browser for 500 points before, and they are given a free d/l of a Famicom VC game or something, I thought it was a nice gesture and fair. But then this is a 1-day up for grabs deal instead of permanent..

  • http://twitter.com/VietKnight Alexander Le

    @Aoshi00
Its only for one day not for lifetime so Sony isn’t really going to refund anyone since it is a promotion for the MakeBelieve event they have.

  • http://twitter.com/mrchan Kelvin Chan

I’m a fan of the visuals of TGC’s products, but the dependence on SixAxis controllers have always thrown me off. I’ve found myself going super slow in Flower on occasion because I keep shooting past a bud or two… …and now I’m trying Fl0w and find, crap, enemies!

    I’m enjoying this.

  • http://photovoltaik.bandcamp.com/ Ujn Hunter

Damn it. 1 day too late! Serves me right for having a social life on Saturdays! I think it’s all a ploy by Sony trying to give people a reason to turn on their PS3 other than to watch the latest Blu-Ray release.
