Grandia Graces PlayStation Network

By Spencer . February 23, 2010 . 7:46pm

imageIt took about a year to happen, but Sony is finally re-releasing Grandia as a downloadable PlayStation Classic. Look for it on PlayStation Network this Thursday for $9.99.

Released right after the post Final Fantasy VII RPG wave, Grandia first appeared on the Sega Saturn. Two years later Game Arts made a PsOne port which Sony Computer Entertainment America published in North America.

The PlayStation Blog has a post with Takahiro Nishi, Sound Director, reminiscing about Grandia’s development and these illustrations from Toshiaki Hontani and Takuhito Kusanagi.

This game has “classic” voice acting, too, if you know what I mean.

  • epy

Classic indeed. “Gadwin’s secret move, DRAGON KING SLASH!” Oh, the memories.

  • Blazeddc

Wasn’t it “Dragon King Slice”? Pretty sure it was. :o It was epic nevertheless.

    • epy

Oh right! I knew slash sounded somewhat decent, it’s SLICE!

  • anbu

WOW, brings back memories. I still remember the japanese commercial sung by L’arc en Ciel. An adventure from start to finish with a nice ending~

And I just mentioned this game in the Lunar silver star harmony topic last week I think. So Grandia (PSN), Lunar (being remade), Vagrant story (PSN), come on Xenogears next please…

Best news I’ve heard in about a week, I guess.

  • Vino (Tim N)

I haven’t played the first. But I did play Grandia II. And I love that game so so much. Hope they release the second one for PSN in the near future.

    • Hraesvelgr

Better hope for the Dreamcast version of the game. I heard the PS2 version sucked.

  • mirumu

Even after all these years I still consider this my favourite game. Think I need a new copy from the PSN for the PSP.

Great rpg, great story 100% recomended

  • Ereek

Ah! If you haven’t played this game, you must go remedy that now!

  • nyoron

Oh awesome, if I didn’t still have my PS1 discs I would buy this in a heartbeat. Grandia III was… bad, but I LOVED 1 2 and Xtreme and I hope they revisit this series someday.

  • doubletaco

Audio Atrocity Fodder voice acting aside, Grandia still holds up as an excellent game. Newer RPGs just don’t seem to have the feeling of “adventure” that Grandia has.

    • Ereek

I agree. I think the only other game that has that “adventure” feel to me is Skies of Arcadia. It’s no surprise that both are some of my favorite games.

There are just points in Grandia that you come away and realize that everything you’ve seen is only the beginning. You really learn about the world and grow just as Justin does.

  • Loveless973

Now all they need is tales of eternia.

  • http://pto.yetikitn.com MelodyKitn

C’mon EU PSN, I need to play this!

(Mostly because I lost my friend’s disc halfway through the game after it started to stall on me… stupid scratches… and so I never got to finish it)

  • holyPaladin

    Grandia so good =p
Hard to levelling, I think I finish this game at Lv.30 or something..

    and… Grandia IV?

*_______* Finaly! ill be able to play it ^__^! I love Grandia 2 , its awsome i have it for PS2 , it was so so awsome ! XD and humm they sing in portuguese although you cant really understand it unless you know the language XD!
XD i hope this comes out in europe too ……. oh well i can always buy from american store anyway :/

  • malek86

Cool, but I already have like two copies of this, one for PSX and one for Saturn. I don’t need another one. I do need Grandia Xtreme though.

    • nyoron

Yeah you do! Xtreme is extremely underrated. It’s sort of a grind but it has the best combat/skill/mana egg systems for the series which makes it an incredibly fun grind. And the story is better than 3 (I know that’s not saying much but still).

  • http://otoboku.se manga

Nice. Then I might finally be able to play this again. Sure I have it in PAL format but I´m to lazy to grab the PS2 and plug it in.

So this might be a good chance for me to reclaim one of the better fighting systems that I know.

    • malek86

You don’t want to play this game on a PS2 anyway. It will crash.

  • thebanditking

Can’t wait, this news made my week!

  • Jaxx-Leviathan

omgomgomgomgomg OMG! *passes out in bliss*

PSN is still at last week’s update. (Feb 18) [Plays tiny fiddle]
Better be updated by the time I get home. [Shakes tiny fist]
