Take Two Takes First Step Towards Conquering Japan

By Spencer . February 24, 2010 . 1:50am

Take Two the publisher of Grand Theft Auto IV and Bioshock is opening an office in Japan. This subsidiary will publish Take Two’s titles in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Currently, many Take Two games are available in Japan thanks to a smorgasbord publishers. Capcom handled most of the Grand Theft Auto games, which sold fairly well. Spike picked up other Take Two releases such as NBA 2K[X], MLB 2K[X], and Bioshock. D3 Publisher got the bid for Bioshock 2. Cyberfront released Civilization Revolution and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

Moving forward, Take Two Japan will publish and localized games for Japan on their own starting with Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City.

Personally I feel Take 2 has a long hard to road to gaining Japanese attention and sales. The GTA series has been released over in Japan before but failed to generate the sales or hype that it has in the states. I feel this is due to the natre and content of the stories told by the GTA games, which do not lend all that well to Japanese tastes or culture. I doubt GTA 4 will turn any heads as I personally found (what I played of it) to be the worst in the series.

Bioshock 2 could become a cult hit among Japans growing shooter fans but from my understanding many Japanese get motion sickness very easily, so FPS’s will probably remain a niche genre in Japan.

I think riding cars a lot makes people more tolerant to motion sickness, and that might be why many Japanese players get sick more easily. (Japanese trains are so smooth!)

Funny thing is that even though I’m an avid FPS player and I never get motion sick, Bioshock made me sick for the first time. I tinkered around with various graphics settings, mouse response, and reduced window size but it didn’t help much.

    • Now that you mention it, it would be interesting if The Amazon Curve did a feature on a GTA game

GTA was one of the few titles I noticed that people in Japan were taking notice of. Mostly for modding anime characters in for CJ or Tommy.

Makes me wonder what sales an anime inspired GTA game would bring.
