Final Fantasy XIII Producer Had A Hard Time Hunting Mission Monsters

When you reach the open ended part of Final Fantasy XIII you can take on monster hunting missions. Daisuke Inoue, Final Fantasy XIII Battle Planner, designed these side quests with four rules.

1.) They should never force the player characters to equip any specific accessories.

2.) They should never require players to use TP abilities* to defeat them.
*(TP abilities are special skills such as Quake, Libra, and summons.)

3.) They should never require the player to use healing items to defeat them.

4.) They should never require the player to use shrouds* to defeat them.
*(Shrouds or smokes are buffing items you can use before encounters.)

“I can assure you that the mission monsters were designed first and foremost to present players with a real challenge,” said Inoue. “So much so, in fact, that our producer Mr. Kitase even came to us complaining he could not beat some of them and had no idea what to do, despite fighting with none of the handicaps mentioned above.”

Monster missions are the main after-the-credits-roll content in Final Fantasy XIII. Expect a challenge, if you decide to keep playing.

    they are actually time consuming

very cumbersome indeed.. you need to accept a quest from one end of the field, and then search for the monster in quite far away. If you abort a mission and start a new hunt, you'd need to start over again.. And I still can't beat any A-class mission for the life of me, I just get wiped out in a matter of seconds.. at least not w/ the help of any guide..

I dont think I can get Serah's theme by getting the platinum trophy, but I want to beat the last boss w/ a 5-star rating for the lightning theme, I think I was pretty close…

It's kind of sad this is like the only sidequest though, so many potential mini-games.. if S-E say they were leaving out the towns because of the storyline, it doesn't make sense they have the leisure to hunt monsters anyway.. Lost Odyssey has way more sidequests than FFXIII…

Lost Odyssey is a REAL RPG too, unlike Final Fantasy XIII.

Who are you, or I, to determine what is or is not a “real” RPG?

Great news because I haven't re-played a Final Fantasy since Tactics on the PSX. Don't anticipate another playthrough, but this seems enough to resist putting the game away. Really like the rules designed for the hunts; thought they were a joke, initially. If they're anything like FFXII I should really enjoy it.

Can't tell if you speak in jest, but I'm sure average gamers like us may determine what is a “real” (as in great) RPG.

Not taking some of them with smokes or healing? Wtf kind of conditions are those? How could you beat some of the later ones WITHOUT that stuff?

If I had a hard time even with the smokes (not with invisible smoke though since that gives a preemptive strike and free break :P), then I can understand how Kitase-san must have felt not being able to use any of the handicaps, haha.

Some of Titan's trials were a pain without pre-buffs to help. As for healing, I'd say the last mission boss was kind of a pain at times, despite setting everyone to DEF when necessary (taking on a monster with 15,000,000+ HP and without healing or pre-buffs is kind of ummm..dumb).

Ah, getting Superstar isn't that bad, Aoshi. Just do what I did. I got the trophy on my second try (this was after I had already beat the game and just wanted to try again to see if I could beat him with 5 stars, lol). Bring in Lightning, Fang, and Hope.

Use a smoke for some pre-buffs, then go in debuffing him in the beginning until you get him with everything you can. Switch to BLA BLA BLA and blast the hell out of him.

Keep doing so after a break until he reaches close to 999%, then switch to BLA ATK ATK and go to town on his Persona ass (definitely reminds me of a design ripped from Persona anyway, heh). I attacked him with Lightning as my main, but if you're REALLY having a hard time, maybe you should control Fang and use Highwind right before the break meter runs out.

Follow these steps and heal when necessary or switch to DEF DEF DEF when he's about to do one of his big attacks. Lasers, sword, etc. The only thing I could really see standing in your way is that stupid one hit kill he does every now and then (Hama much?).

This guy is like..really easy though, lol. Seriously. You can finish in less than 6 minutes.

Thanks for the tip, that's my team also, but I use Hope since the AI doesn't cast Haste first sometimes. I actually haven't unlocked all the classes for everyone yet, only maxed out their original classes, so Fang is my only DEF, maybe that's my problem since I only have two BLA BLA. I thought I beat the last form pretty fast but only got 4 star (the first two forms I was able to get 5-star, but I read they don't matter). Yeah, after beating the game and some grinding he's a wimp. I'm going to give it another try tonight :) Destructoid compared him to Kefka, I say blasphemy!

I just can't wait until this is finally out. For one so I can finally figure out for my self if I like the story and gameplay and two, so that everyone can finally stop talking about it :p

  • thebanditking

So you played Final Fantasy XIII to completion then? Seriously all the negativity needs to stop, Aoshi has a right to critique the game as he actually played it. Which is more then I can say for most of the people who are constantly bashing it. Lost Odyssey is a fantastic RPG but anymore I find that the root of people hating FF13 has more to do with either “the 360 version is a bad port” or “its not exclusive anymore” rather then you know actually having played the game…….

  • thebanditking

Nice, thanks for the info. I will be holding on to this for when I actually get to the end.

  • zatrox

The dude's never played a SMT game.

The title of “Real RPGs” should technically belong solely to pen-and-paper type games.
