Heads Up, “Phat” PS3s Having Difficulties Connecting To PSN

Heads Up, “Phat” PS3s Having Difficulties Connecting To PSNYou may have heard about this already, but if you haven’t PlayStation3s, typically pre-slim PS3s, are having problems connecting online.

A dreaded 8001050F error blocks PlayStation Network access, trophy synchronization, PSN games, dynamic themes, and even retail titles such as Heavy Rain. Reports from “phat” PlayStation 3 owners state their console’s date rolled back, which may be the cause of the problem.

Slim PlayStation 3 owners appear to be unaffected. “Readers/followers are confirming that "slim" units (120/250 GB models) are connecting normally,” states the PlayStation Twitter account.

The PlayStation Blog says Sony has “narrowed down the issue and have engineers working to restore service.”

It's not just online, apparently. Even some offline games are not working. Not that I can try, since my PS3 is being repaired right now. Good timing.

But if the problem is really because of the whole leap year thing, then tomorrow it should be fine. Still, kind of sucks. I heard someone got their savedata deleted.

My 160gb phat worked fine , played FF13 al afternoon , and about 1 am loged in to play crystal defenders had no problems.

I haven't turned on my Phat in months ever since I've got the Slim, but I remember having some problem syncing my trophies at first when I switched to the new system, it would take very long and the only way to sync was by “comparing trophies” w/ my friends. Also I have much faster wireless wi-fi speed w/ my Slim than the Phat too, even though both are positioned next to each other.

So I guess all the complaints about freezing is from playing it on the Phat huh? At least I don't need to worry about that midway playing the game.

Since my Phat's fan is pretty loud compared to the quiet slim, I'm just going to use it as a upscaled PS2 or something. I wish there is some way I could make the fan run quieter, but it always gets noisy 5mins after it's turned on, cleaning out the dust from the vent doesn't help.

Yup my phat cannot connect online and the date was reset back to 1999 yesterday…:p
My trophies and save files were not affected.
Hopefully Sony will fix this issue today.

I was wondering why the entire time I played Heavy Rain the internet connection kept going in and out. Thanks for the heads up.

dude this is what I found out in NeoGaf: [http://neogaf.net/forum/showthread.php?t=388872]

    Everyone READ THIS PLEASE.

Here's what's going on right now: something with the PS3's internal clock has borked in some pre-slim models. This is not a PSN issue; it has to do with your PS3's clock. This clock is NOT related to the OS clock. It seems to be a leap year bug. Setting your clock ahead will do nothing. All PS3s around the world were affected at the exact same time.

    Does this affect me?

-If you have a Slim PS3, you're good to go. Continue playing it as normal.
-If you have a “fat” PS3, you may be affected. Some fat PS3s have worked ok, but it seems a good majority have been bugged.

    What does this bug mean?

-If affected, your date and time has been set to a random past date. This prevents you from signing into PSN, playing any PSN games, or using any DLC. Your trophies will also not display correctly or be able to sync.

    How do I fix it?

-You can't. Even if you don't sign into PSN, it won't help. This is a hardware issue.

    So, what do I do?

-Wait 24 hours. Other products that have had similar bugs have corrected themselves after the “bugged” day. On Monday around 6pm central time, all PS3s will automatically correct themselves…maybe.

-If that doesn't work, we'll need a firmware update from Sony, which should be a pretty important priority for them right now.

    Did I lose my data/themes/etc?

Your save data/games/dlc/themes are fine. They'll be fixed when the PS3 is fixed. Trophies are uncertain right now, but they'll be fine if you've synced them before the PS3 was bugged. Unsynced trophies are an unknown right now.

If I have a bugged PS3, can I still use it?

It's probably not a good idea, as I have no idea what will happen to the trophies you earn during the bugged time. Movies/media will work fine.

I actually tried yesterday to play WKC and while it tried to sync the trophies it deleted them from my list

I'm disconnected too. And my Demon's Souls theme and Heavy Rain theme are listed “corrupted data” so I can't use them.

Yeah, happened to me, too. Imagine my surprise when I tried to get around it by just playing something like Valkyria Chronicles, only to be told I don't have any DLC. Sad times, but luckily, I work all day.
