Square Enix Begins “Next Generation Game Engine” Project

With the advent of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, presentation of graphics and sound is rapidly increasing. Square Enix wants to keep up with the joneses and reduce costs by creating a more advanced video game engine.

Square Enix is hiring a small army ranging from rendering programmers to technical artists and Windows app programmers for their next generation game engine project. One position that’s particularly interesting, is the online system programmer job which recommends PS3/Xbox 360 and MMO level network experience. While Square Enix has Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XIV, and a other few MMOs, their key business isn’t the MMO market. Perhaps, Square Enix is laying tracks for future games with more online elements.

Didn't they just spend years upon years making the White Engine and they're already going to scrap that? What the hell are they doing over there?

Well, like the article said, they seem to have other plans for this one.
That's makes sense, as just making a new engine just for improved graphics and sounds is just, well, whatever you want to call it.

So are we going to be seeing multiple BD disc games from Square Enix now? Sheesh…

Actually BD have a great amount of space just look at FF XIII for example, it was only 38 GB I think and the disk was 50GB, anyway I know that on their page with that announcement for hiring and the small picture of cloud has people wetting their pants because it'll keep their dream of a remake alive lol. Now my curiosity is with this new graphics engine Square Enix wants to develop, lets see!

    I'm kinda curious about this

Instead of making a brand new engine, it would have been much cheaper for Square Enix to say properly use an existing next gen engine IE Unreal or Crytek. (Yes i know that Undiscovery used unreal 3 but apparently not to the same effect and efficiency as gears of war 2, or mass effect series) If they can use it properly, their game would look just as good but apparently Square want to develop their own

I think Square Enix should just use their White/Crystal Tools engine for their games instead of blowing more money by making another engine just to make their games look better.

Final Fantasy 13 is already the best looking game on the market. Why not wait until other games look somewhat similar in comparison before blowing them out of the water with a new one?

They're still doing FF Versus XIII and FFXIV on it, I guess.

I gotta say I don't see a lot of sense in developing yet another engine, though.

While FFXIII does look good, somehow its graphics just doesn't impress me the way some other games do. I don't know what engine Heavy Rain uses, but that looked incredible (all kinds of rain and environment) and I was in constant awe.. I heard they shot many hours of mo-cap for that.. I guess the important thing is how you utilize the technology, but Jpn developers just arent' good w/ Unreal for example, and you can do amazing stuff w/ that in the right hands.
