Square Enix’s PS3 Action RPG Revealed

By Spencer . March 30, 2010 . 11:18pm

imageSquare Enix just put a “new” (note the quotes) action RPG on Japan’s PlayStation Network. It’s not what you’re thinking. No, it’s not that either.

The game Square Enix was teasing on Monday is Trine, renamed Trine: The Lost Relic in Japan. Nobilis brought the game to the West and Square Enix has the Japanese publishing rights. While Square Enix localized Western WiiWare games such as Lit and LostWinds for Japan, Trine: The Lost Relic is their first PlayStation Network pickup. You can get Trine for 2,400 yen ($26) in Japan or a Jackson, if you use a North American region account.

    lol S-E twitter

I guess it’s good more people will get to play the game though.

    . . .

Well, it shows SE is still capable of utterly shocking me.

    • Good way or bad way?

      • I say bad way. They’re becoming something that I can’t describe.

        • Vanilla

Ditto. SE (maybe even just Square) used to have a respectable degree of integrity, and now it’s stooped to becoming a kind of pseudo-Nintendo.

      • Ereek

Well, I’d like to say good, but in this case I’m neutral. Now I’m just hoping SE comes up with an announcement someday that makes me sit there and stare at my computer in shock, numb and unable to move. I’m not sure what exactly would do that (like Xenogears HD maybe? Simply because I’m dead set into believing it will never happen).

I’d actually compare my reaction to this to the XIV announcement. I was mesmerized by the trailer, and then when I realized it was another MMO I deflated a bit. Not that I think XIV will be bad, I would probably greatly enjoy it, I just don’t have time for it. In this case it was like interest and then. . .nothing.

For me I don’t know if its a bad thing but of late I have found their announcements underwhelming. As a gamer I resonate better with the 90’s PSX/Saturn/Dreamcast era then anything else so Square-Enixs’ change in business operations leaves me a little disappointed. I always expect them to announce a new Chrono game or some big new title like Vagrant Story or Parasite Eve but of late they have been announcing things like this or Just Cause 2 which just dont live up to what I expect from them. Of course Im not saying thats a bad thing as maybe what I expect is not in line with what the current market wants. Seems true as more and more games focus on multiplayer and FPS genres then what I want or expect . Guess thats the difference between being a fan and being the target market, I remember when I was the target market and action/adventure and Platformers and mascot characters were the norm and JRPG’s were the big thing.

Agreed, this is quite shocking. S-E has been doing that to me lately only because I associate both Squaresoft and Enix as JRPG powerhouses. So naturally when they say “we have a new game” I (and alot of others obviously) automatically think that it must be some huge RPG announcement.

    That was an anticlimax!

  • Meh, was expecting something better…

  • MrRobbyM

    That’s a boner-killer…

  • o.o ………….. disapointment «« oh well XD i already have Trine :P

  • Aoshi00

Don’t think the game is very good either, it was on sale for $10 a couple of weeks ago..

    • thaKingRocka

it’s a fun game, nothing grand. i picked it up for 7 bucks or so on a steam sale.

  • Oh well. Not exactly what I was expecting, but Trine was a good game. The entire last level, including the ending, were a bit disappointing but it was a fun weekend distraction. I figure I’ll still try to platinum it one day.

    • Chow

Honestly, I was completely surprised when I noticed that the game had a Platinum Trophy. And this happened when it rang in to notify me that I got it. =D

  • holyPaladin

    Hype about nothing =(

  • Great game, but like other said, way way not what I was expecting.

Glad Japan can get this now though!

  • nyobzoo

    that was totally unexpected

  • Vino (Tim N)

Japan gets a “new” game. Good for them. [/No sarcasm here.]
