Resonance Of Fate Hair Is Technologically Impressive

imageEver wonder how many polygons developer tri-Ace used to create Leanne? Her hair?


Tri-Ace didn’t reveal exact numbers, but an in-depth report about the game’s ASKA engine at Impress Watch has estimates. Characters, player characters like Vashyron and NPCs, are roughly 30,000 to 40,000 polygons. For male characters, 5,000 of those are used for hair. Female characters, like Leanne, used up to 8,000 polygons. Comparatively, lead characters in PS2 games were made out of 5,000 to 8,000 polygons total.


The article has a look at digital bones or points used for physics. Faces of the lead characters have forty or so bone points while hair, like for Leanne, has 250.

        Actually, WRPGs have been getting better of late – Dragon Age’s faces weren’t too bad. By contrast, although RoF’s visual style has been growing on me, initially it felt like they’d kind of fallen halfway between the more stylized kind of anime look and a more realistic look – especially in the case of Leanne/Reanbell.
        On the animation front, though, RoF is excellent. The sheer effort that went into rigging the faces/hair definitely paid off.

          Are you kidding me?? LOL Dragon Age Origins faces were HORRIBLE
          Thank God for the PC version’s custom mods. I changed pretty much all my main characters faces to improve on them. Same went for Fallout 3 and Oblivion.
          Really ugly gaames….

      Well, one thing is probably cultural/style differences. I mean, you look at your average American, for example, and their hairstyles are pretty plain. On the other hand, your modern Japanese person will often have very, um… “pretty” hair, like they just came from a salon or something.

      To be blunt, I’d say that once someone knows enough Japanese to read an article like that, they’re probably past the stage of weeabooism.

    Remember when Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within came out, they were boasting about how they needed a few hours to render a single frame? The main character had about fifty-thousand individual hairs that apparently made each frame so processor-intensive.

    But then again, that was over ten years ago.

      yeah, CG always gets better and better, just like Pixar always pushing the envelope, they said the hair in Monster Inc. was done painstakingly, and the newer films are like 10x better now. Also mocap is done better too, the movement in Spirits Within just didn’t seem too natural, but that was groundbreaking then, Cid still looks good though, Donald Sutherland sure can voice anime chars (Cid, and the president in Astro Boy).

    Everything about this game is impressive. :)
    The hair and facial expressions are particularly awesome, but I’m loving every second of RoF. Just started Chapter 4 today. Been playing for 8 hours.

    Leanne/Reanbell’s hair is certainly better than FFXIII”s. The hair, blocky fingers/nails, and polygonal arms just look kind of out of place in XIII, I mean not as bad as Xenosaga Ep2, but still..
