Cloud Mario Softly Steps Into Super Mario Galaxy 2

By Spencer . April 16, 2010 . 10:47am

imageMario has one more new power up in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Official Nintendo Magazine revealed Cloud Mario, a suit which appears to let Mario walk on cheerful clouds. Rock Mario is one of the other made-for-Super Mario Galaxy 2 power-ups.

Neither of them are in this video, but you catch a whole lot of Yoshi plus some second player star piece shooting action.

Thanks for the link to the video Diaz!

rar, that suit is all kinds of badass — still not in the league of Raccoon Hat, but still way better then that Great Gazoo Propeller Helment.

sounds like they’re running out of ideas tbh

      It’s basically Nintendo pulling a Rockman 10.

Mario has pretty much always walked on clouds, at least I think it started in Super Mario Bros. 2, so it’s not very original. But hey, who needs original when it obviously works well in the grand picture and I’ve been missing walking on clouds for the last few Mario entries. Thumbs up for this suit.

All that suit needs now is a mechanic for hijacking Lakitus so you can use the eggs they throw.

You know I’m unfortunately with the Japanese gaming public on this one and have to say that I’ve lost interest in 3D Mario games. They have become so stale and generic by now, despite all the creativity that goes into them.

Mario 64 was absolutely groundbreaking, and I must have spent over 100 hours glued to it. The game was truly seminal. Why Super Mario 64-2 never materialized was a huge mistake IMHO, as was forcing the water gimmick onto Mario Sunshine. Granted it was amusing to clean an island, but for me, by the time Galaxy released I was more or less done with these games. Now we have Galaxy 2 and I don’t even want to buy it…

…it’s kind of sad really, because if I could tell my 1997 self that I would one day feel like this in regards to Mario, I’d burst out laughing.

Nintendo really needs to create some new franchises, I hate to say. These days it’s as if their entire business relies on Pokemon, with Mario and Zelda picking up the rear. What happened to the Nintendo that gave us so many of the Famicom/Famicom Disk System games? Or even the SFC-era Nintendo? There were so many awesome games that never even made it outside of Japan, such as Sutte Hakkun for example. Even the Nintendo 64 days were better as we got things like Kirby 64 or Yoshi’s Story. The Wii has utterly ruined the company, because it knows damn well it can prioritize non-games and make more money than real games ever could. Wii Sports? Wii Resort? Wii Fit? Just look at their sales numbers and then compare them to Super Mario Galaxy or
    Reginlriv, for example.

It’s great that we have things like The Last Story and Xenoblade releasing, but let’s be honest- Nintendo didn’t make them, and neither will be successful.
