Square Enix: Unannounced Game Will Shock You

By Spencer . April 16, 2010 . 3:33pm

image Square Enix USA, perhaps taking a hint from all of Square Enix Japan’s Twitter talk, is teasing an unannounced game.

“Oh and working on stuff for an unannounced game,” Sonia Im, Assistant Director of Public Relations at Square Enix tweeted. “Think people are going to be shocked and stoked :)”

Shocked and stoked? Xenogears 2 would fit that description for me, but I’ll curb my expectations now. There are a ton of games Square Enix USA could announce for North America like Nanashi no Game and The 3rd Birthday. None of those would be “shocking” though. Perhaps, this is something brand new.

Before you post your guess in the comments remember Square Enix owns Eidos. Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and Kane & Lynch 2, those are all Square Enix properties.

I’ll get this one out of the way early:

    Final Fantasy VII HD Remake

  • zhemos

Is the pixelated picture of Locke from FF6 a hint? :P

    • Nah, it’s just funny :)

    • alastor3

nah they will remake FF5 before the 6

  • keriaku

Yes, please be Nanashi no Game!

And I’m kind of hoping that I don’t even need to hope for 3rd Birthday, and that it’s a given… eventually…

  • Kaoro

It’s Final Fantasy XIII-2 :). Just kidding, although I would love to see a FFXIII-2.

Sometimes I wonder if SE USA considers Versus XIII an “unannounced” game. They revealed it in 2006, but I can’t recall them ever saying anything about it since then.

Realistically, wouldn’t the 4 warriors of light fit the bill? Still hasn’t been officially announced, has it?

  • pacanug

Its got to be Belts & Zippers XXVVII!

    • TomSkylark

No, no, you’re forgetting that the Belts & Zippers series now only uses pretentious, difficult to pronounce titles. So, it’ll be called “Belts & Zippers: Last Fate of Us^234 (Recollect).” This is, obviously, pronounced “Belts & Zippers Recollection of Us (Squared) 234.”

  • Shadow_Raskolnik

The only thing that will shock me is if they bring Yasumi Matsuno back to create another Ogre Battle title. Or at least if they put all the current Ogre Battle games and the Tactics Ogre titles on a compilation.

  • Pichi

The World Ends with You Too!

    • kylehyde

      I second that.

  • Nanashi no Game. Nanashi no Game. Nanashi no Game.
    Please, Square!

    • SeventhEvening

I really want Nanashi no Game too!

  • Immerwachender

Secret of Evermore 2, that would be a really positive shock for me !___!

    • Tokyo Guy

What is Ted Woolsey doing these days anyway? The last I heard of him he wrote the hideous looking (yet well written) FF7 clone known as Shadow Madness.

      • Kunio_kun

Well written??? From the man who penned “You spoony Bard!”

        • Icon

Yes, the game was well written. The dialogue and story came across much more smoothly since it was written in English from the start and didn’t have to go through a localization process. Remember, Woolsey was handcuffed by deadlines and Nintendo of America for each game he worked on while at Square. You spoony bard.

        • Tokyo Guy

Yeah, as the other poster said, the game WAS well written. I disliked Woolsey as much as anyone else for “his” hacking away plot details and radical name changes, though apparently (as mentioned) it was Nintendo’s idiocy more than anything else, and Woolsey translating it from Japanese.

I was absolutely shocked to find that he could actually do a good job writing when I played Shadow Madness. It was a total redemption for him really. It’s a shame the game was so poorly made however, that no one even knows about it.

  • Ereek

What would shock me: Last Remnant PS3

What would Stoke me: Any Third Birthday information.

What I want: Anything related to Xenogears.

What it probably is: FFXIV 360

    • Heh, sorry I had to clear up the chain in the other thread. :)

      • Ereek

Oh no, I understand. Sorry about that!

  • 9thsage

Actually, I’d be shocked by Nanashi no Game, only because I think it has a snowball’s chance in Hell of getting released here ever. :P

    • Yeah.. as much as I love the game and wish more people had the chance to play it, I just don’t feel it will be well received by many. It’s a unique game that has it’s flaws; the controls, game length, layout and different aspects of it will overshadow the great story and interesting progressing of it on top of the 4th wall (I think what it is) creepiness.
Then again, I would love to see it released just to show that a horror game -can- work on a portable system.

If not that, they should localize the DSiWare platform games based on the second game!

  • Chrono Break @[email protected]

    • This.

    • This would be awesome

    • LastFootnote

Seconded. After a claim like that, announcing any other game is going to disappoint a lot of people.

  • Another mana game. One can only dream.

    • I’m kind of hoping for a good Mana game. After the original trilogy, they either turned into experiments or couldn’t meet the high standards set by Seiken Densetsu 2.

The thing is, with so many key personnel gone from Square, it’s tough to imagine a new Seiken Densetsu, Chrono, or Xenogears game without something missing. The same thing goes for Konami and Suikoden.

  • Icon

    Maybe a new Chrono game?

  • My votes: Nanashi no Game, Xenogears 2, Chrono Break, Third Birthday. Anything else: lame.

  • kupomogli

Matsuno went back with Square Enix and is currently developing the remaining episodes in the Ogre Battle Saga.

Also. Final Fantasy 5 DS and Final Fantasy 6 PSP being worked on to get a near simultaneous release. I’d think FF5 would fit the DS better where FF6 would fit the PSP better.

  • fallen

No point to make a Xeno game without Takahashi.

  • I’m guessing, another port of, say, the first 3 DQ’s.

  • malek86

Somehow, coming from Squenix USA, I doubt it’s a new game. It’s probably the announcement of a localization. But i don’t see what could shock us in that regard. So maybe it really is a new game. I’m not keeping my hopes up though.

    • LastFootnote

Hmmm, you have a good point. I didn’t catch that it was Square USA earlier. Keep in mind that it’s not necessarily us that’s meant to be shocked. It’s possible that they assume most of their consumers don’t know what’s been released in Japan. “Oooh! Final Fantasy Four Warriors! Shocking!”

  • Masengan

Tomb Raider as an RPG would shock me.

    • Ereek

I’d play it. Especially if it were an Adventure/Exploration RPG, something like Grandia.

  • Hmm…because it’s the USA side of things it would seem prudent to keep expectations low.

  • discoma

I hope it’s Nanashi no Game (and/or perhaps its sequel).

Now I gotta listen to NNG’s EP album for the 74327189741839847th time. .,.

  • Chow

Hopefully this announcement won’t turn out like this:

  • killerjuan77

Square, release Nanashi No Game, ever since it was released I’ve wanted to play it.

  • koffer_junkhead

FFVII remake? That would make me stoked.
