One Piece: Gigant Battle Jetting Out Of Namco Bandai

By Spencer . May 17, 2010 . 10:17am

imageNamco Bandai lifted the curtain off Project Jet and revealed One Piece: Gigant Battle.

This upcoming One Piece game takes the pirates and throws them in a battle royale. One Piece: Gigant Battle uses sprites and has up to four fighters on a screen. Looks similar to Jump Ultimate Stars, huh? That’s probably because Ganbarion, the developer of the Japan-only manga mashup fighter, is also behind One Piece: Gigant Battle.

Japan gets One Piece: Gigant Battle sometime this fall. Plans for other regions have not been announced, but that doesn’t mean it won’t head overseas. Namco Bandai passed on publishing One Piece Unlimited Cruise in North America, but both Wii games were released in Europe.

Okay, Namco Bandai, we get it: Dragonball > Tales, One Piece, Digimon, Gundam, Super Robot Wars. Now, just let D3 Publisher of America handle this, and One Piece fans will be happy.

When you think about it, a series like One Piece would pose much more serious problems than DB or Naruto when it comes to fighting games, because characters have vastly different heights.DB and Naruto focus on human-like characters, which makes things easy. But in One Piece you have Luffy or Zoro, and then you have people like Kuma or Magellan. How are you supposed to fit them in the same screen, unless you purposely scale down their size? For people used to reading the manga, Kuma looks like a midget in those screens.Maybe this could also happen in Hokuto no Ken, but all the strong characters in that series were human-sized, while the big dudes were just mooks who died in one chapter, so no problem there.

Well at least this is a One Piece game I can import with no problems. I’m not sure I’m that interested in this game though. I’m a huge One Piece fan, but I wasn’t a big fan of the Jump All Stars series.

Well hey, this doesn’t look bad. Maybe this won’t end up being trash like Gear Spirit.
