Square Enix Plans On Strengthening Intellectual Properties

By Spencer . May 18, 2010 . 5:26am

One of Square Enix’s goals for continued growth is to strengthen their own intellectual properties. With the acquisition of Eidos, Square Enix has a ton of them. This slide lists some key IPs for the publisher.

Square Enix franchises are in blue, Eidos titles are in orange, and Taito’s history is in green. Nice to see Parasite Eve high on the “list” even though it isn’t clear if these IPs are ranked in order of importance or not. Manga properties like Fullmetal Alchemist, Black Butler, and Soul Eater are even on the slide. However, the Mana and Chrono series are notably absent. Square Enix plans to pursue cross media strategies for their IPs.

In addition to maintaining series like Star Ocean and Densha de Go!, Square Enix wants to create new AAA brands. Nier was listed on another slide as a “major release” for the current fiscal year. Whether it becomes a new brand or not remains to be seen.

Update: Yoichi Wada, CEO and President of Square Enix, said over Twitter the slide is just a list of IPs Square Enix owns and doesn’t have any other meaning.

Based on the reactions to FME so far, I’m not exactly sure I’d consider what they’re doing with Front Mission “strengthening” it.

Also, I have no idea about any Chrono games, but I’m pretty sure Square Enix canned the Mana series after the last, uh, three or four games fell face first into the mud.

    Star Ocean pls..

And FMA? Maybe it’s the manga which will end soon =(

  • Mana and SaGa dead confirmed.

I kid, I kid, but I really wish Square would localize the DS remake of SaGa 2. They’ve been really lax on bringing stuff over lately, haven’t they?

They need to get Dream Factory back and make Tobal 3 and also make a sequel to Racing Lagoon RPG

I’m happy to see a lot of the stuff that’s on there. I wish Nier was on there though :(. Star Ocean 5 confirmed?

I thought a couple of weeks ago they just said Nier was to be “2nd pillar”, so now it just belongs to … :(? I guess the game was just too good for people to hand, it’s okay, I don’t want unnecessary sequels anyway.. Got Replicant tonight, installing right now (going to play on easy instead of normal this time) Got ending B yet :)? Alan Wake just shipped, so I won’t be playing C/D for a while. I just it’s just one more playthru, and you’re presented a choice to pick btwn C or D, but we need to pick C first and then D.

  • Square Enix, while you’re at it:

–SaGa 2. Mainly as an arcade player, I did not have the chance to experience SaGa 2 back in the day.
–VC release of Lufia II. A lot of people have been complaining that “Lufia II remake has been Ruined FOREVER!”
–Do a rotation of flagship IP’s, on an annual basis. Example: Don’t release FF on an annual basis, while do promote more Taito and Eidos games, and do rotate them too, annually.
