Dragon Quest IX’s Localization Looks Something Like This

Along with the July 11 release date, Nintendo sent out the first batch of English Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies screenshots.

While story screenshots aren’t in the batch, the item descriptions are flavored with puns like “driller pillar” and extra “u”s. Seems like the localization team is sticking to the Dragon Quest standards established for the Nintendo DS remakes.

Nintendo is also localizing Dragon Quest IX’s downloadable quests, which players can access over Nintendo Wi-Fi. One of these, released last year in Japan, features Santa Claus.

Glad to see Squenix and Nintendo are sticking with the offbeat style of adaptation they used before. I know some people think the spell names are stupid, but this style really suits a whimsical title like Dragon Quest.

dam i wanted this to be for PS2 or PS3…

did 3 playtroughs on DQ VIII for th PS2 xD

oh well…at least its getting localized :D

    enjoy it ppl xD

  • MrRobbyM

I agree, I like the off beat vibe DQ has. It adds to it's charm.

  • MrRobbyM

Looking great for a DS game. Would want a Wii or better yet a Ps3 mian DQ title though. Is that Wii game still being made?

    Day one.

  • Tim N

I was worried that they would censor the fairy by making her white @_@ false alarm. I know crap like that doesn't happen much anymore, but still…

Anyways, I'm really excited for this. Can anyone tell me what DS titles we have here for DQ?

  • Hraesvelgr

Um… why would they make the fairy white? That doesn't make sense.

  • Ereek

It no doubt is, but it doesn't have a target release date of this fiscal year. So expect mid-2011 at earliest.

    Ah, good to hear. Thanks.

Tell that to 4Kids. They made a black character from One Piece to white for no reason, IMO.

  • MrRobbyM

I;m going to be a hipster about it and get it a month after the release when all the hype is gone. Or better yet, I'll import the japanese version the day the english version is released. *pushes up lensless glasses*

Since when do they censor a tanned character? Last I remembered was Persona for PS1 where the MC lightened in skin tone (the whole cast was made more westernized to begin with).

  • Tim N

I know, what I said is ridiculous, but when this game came out, everyone was talking about the tanned fairy. Something along the lines of what I said popped up then too.

    me want

  • Hraesvelgr

To do the import bit properly, the game would need to have a Japanese language track that was removed, even if it was replaced with no voice acting or an excellent English dub. Because Japanese is always superior, no matter what.

  • Hraesvelgr

They changed a black character to white because of the lips, since some woman threw a fit over the Pokemon Jynx. Regardless, the chances of something like that happening here are pretty low.

  • conchobhar

I don't see any extra Us. I see words spelt correctly ;)

    Grow up.

    Japanese FF13 > NA FF13.

  • Aoshi00

The fairy was a ganguro (those tanned girls w/ bleached blond hair), not natural dark skinned right? I don't think many Jpn gamers liked the design either… Personally I find that look/make-up kind of annoying..

  • MrRobbyM

I don't even get why this is a popular style. It's actually very creepy.

I'm interested in this game because Dragon Quest yaaaaay, but there is no one around me to use any of the multiplayer features with, and that's the whole point of the game. Aside from my brother, who is several hundred miles away, I don't know any DS owners. And I'm not even sure he'd like DQ.

…Hell, I can't even connect to Nintendo WFC without screwing around with my router, because for some completely unfathomable reason Nintendo didn't bother implementing WPA encryption!

So I guess I won't be picking this up! :/

  • effluentrainfall

Stoked! There's been some dissent for this installment, but clearly a large number of people love it and I find the charm aura permeating Dragon Quest positively irresistible in any capacity. Firing up Dragon Quest IV and V on my DS was a relaxing, revelrous stroll through 2D-3D meadows and accents aplenty.

Which, for the record, I enjoyed thoroughly even in IV, where it was much-maligned as obnoxious. Which reminds me, I'm told the person (people?) behind IV / V's localization efforts are no longer at Square Enix. Is there any truth to that?

  • Joanna

Like everyone else, I'm glad that Nintendo has tried to retain the DQ charm. I will definitely be picking this up day 1!

  • runesong

Same here. If I can't get it on day one my heart will be icy like a slime being ridden by Jack Frost.
