Marvelous Cuts Back On Game Development, Focuses Efforts On PSP

image Marvelous, after docking executive pay and selling off Rising Star Games, is scaling back video game development. The Valhalla Knights and No More Heroes publisher only has ten packaged games planned for fiscal year 2011 – that’s the period between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011.

Four of those games are for PSP. Delayed games, Ikki Tousen: Xross Impact and Fate/Extra account for half of that number. That means two PSP games are in the works plus two Wii games and two PlayStation 3 titles.

Actually, make that one unannounced PS3 title. No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise, which was also held back for the current fiscal year, wrestled its way into stores in April. The No More Heroes port is also Marvelous’ only Xbox 360 game for this year.

Marvelous used to support the Nintendo DS with a stream of strategy RPGs and farming sims. Not this year. Harvest Moon: Twins’ Village will be their only DS title. Like most of their 2010 lineup, Harvest Moon: Twins’ Village also slipped into this fiscal period.

So, Marvelous has five games left to reveal. I’m betting one of the PSP games is a Hitman Reborn fighting game. Marvelous releases at least one of those every year. The other four titles – two Wii, one PSP, and one PS3 game are anyone’s guess.

Man how a company that produced and published Little Kings story, Deadly Premonition, and Avalon Code some of the best games ever in the year they published these games they face these difficulties! I blame all of you people.

    • Don’t blame me. I bought a lot of their games (Including Ignition stuff). Not only that, I’m still waiting for Rune Factory 3 to hit the states.

If just there are some hundreds of thousands like you two.

          if only :(
Siliconera readers only make up a small fraction of game consumers….I wish more people were like Siliconera readers and gave new IPs a try.

    • Nope. I’ve been faithfully buying Marvelous Entertainment games, as I’m waiting for Arc Rise Fantasia this year.

PS: I hope Marvelous Entertainment would force US localization companies to include bonus swag, since the prior is extremely generous about pre-order bonuses in its home market of Japan.

  • The lack of DS support could mean they’re preparing for 3DS development, which we already know they’re keen on. Good to see them focus more on PSP, since that’s where they seem to do well. I really do think it will be very interesting to see how Fate/Extra does.

Gotta use that PS Move controller for something.

I truly hope someone (dear XSeed maybe, if they aren’t too occupied with their uber-awesome Falcom projects) manages to localize Fate Extra. I am probably going to buy the japanese limited edition, but will be glad to double dip if a brave western publisher translates it.

  • Aw seriously, harvest moon series are being released too slowly now

  • *sound of heart breaking*

    Need more Harvest Moon…

(And interesting stuff like King’s Story, and Avalon Code)

I wonder if they’re going to make more Rune Factory games. Supposedly Rune Factory 3 finally made combat useful and improved the NPC AI and interaction quite a bit, I’d love to see it brought over and a new title with new characters that expand on these features on more powerful hardware.

I wonder what the 2 upcoming Wii games are.

Hopefully Arc Rise Fantasia 2 (which reminds me how the first one is getting raped in US!)

I hope they’re quick to support the 3DS, a console release window is always atractive.
