What Would You Ask An Executive From NIS America?

By Spencer . June 14, 2010 . 4:00pm

What Would You Ask An Executive From NIS America? We *may* be interviewing a key executive from NIS America during E3. I have some questions ready, but, as usual, I’d like to get yours.

No guarantees, but if you’ve seen our past fan-powered interviews we generally include a number of well thought-out reader questions.

  • YoFace

Q: Please save us with more games! Because M$ didn’t offer, and kinda skeptical with Sony and Move.

  • cj_iwakura

PRINNY 2! When, where, and who do I give my soul to?

  • heratio

I would ask: Considering the success of Record of the Agarest War on Xbox 360, would you consider bringing some games to the Xbox 360 that are either PS3 ports or older XBox 360 RPGs like Far East of Eden Ziria?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Why would you want them to betray their fanbase like that?

      • heratio

How does that betray their fanbase? They already make games for Nintendo, why not all 3 console makers and let everyone enjoy their games. Video games is not usually a zero-sum game.

        • heratio

First, the musician example has pretty much zero applicability here. I don’t think any JRPGs have been altered just because they came to XBox 360. Nothing would be altered in a port and in fact it would not cost near as much to port in comparison to actually creating the product (when NIS even does this) since there would be no need for more translation and some effort to transfer the game to another platform. And the result of this extra effort may very well double the sales.

I will never understand people that feel bitter and betrayed because someone else with a different system gets to play a game you already have.

You must have had a complete meltdown on Final Fantasy 13. In a sad way it makes me hope FF Versus 13 doesn’t make it to XBox 360, even though I would like to play it.

      • Hraesvelgr

Their fanbase should be fans of the games and more people playing them, not which console the games are on.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

So, by your logic, shouldn’t their fanbase buy PS3′s (or a portable), since that’s where they are bringing their games? If you’re a fan of NISA console games, you buy a PS3, since that’s where they are. If you want to buy a 360, you aren’t a big enough fan, so you do without. I would like to see games like Deathsmiles on the PS3, but since they aren’t coming, I do without, since I’m not a big enough fan of that style to buy a second console for it.So, if people love NISA games enough to buy the system they’re available for, to buy every title that comes out, how would it not be a betrayal to bring out stuff those people couldn’t play, just because it happens to be the more mainstream system?

          • M’iau M’iaut

That assumes those wishing to play the types of titles NISAmerica has brought over all only have PS3s. And that they only wish to play niche title games that only appear on the PS3.Finding more outlets for localizing the types of games those who visit this site tend to embrace, is never a bad thing. And NISA really seems committed to correcting past mistakes regarding localization issues.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

If they wanted to play the niche titles enough, they picked up the system they were available for. If the majority of niche games were available on the 360, I would’ve bought that. But they’re not, so to put them somewhere else would be, to put it quite bluntly, bullshit. If Aksys did not stack the deck with all those extras for the 360 version, on top of making it the only available retail version, and only advertising the 360 version, Record of Agarest War would’ve sold horribly on the 360, just like all other games of that type.

It’s like if I wanted to play more shooters, I’d pick up a 360. I don’t see how you can’t see the logic in that.

          • M’iau M’iaut

            (Darn thread limits)

            @ Charles

But it is not as if the 360 either here or Japan has not seen niche RPGs. Operation Darkness came over and IdeaFactory has already been in the 360 game with Spectral Force 3. We can debate the quality….although both have their neat quirks…..but these titles do exist. And that doesn’t include the wider interest titles like Vesperia and SO4 or the ‘we can only dream’ selections like Idolm@ster.

          • heratio

You’re talking about “betrayal” on the topic of video games……..VIDEO GAMES, not some personal relationship between two people, but something that people do to relax and have some fun. What is so bad for NIS making games for all the platforms so that no one is left out, it would bring more fans to them. They are not Sony and I think the words like “betrayal” should be left to more meaningful facets of life.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

A smaller company with limited resources, spreading themselves thin just so “everyone” can play it means less games for those who have been supporting them for a long while. It’s simple economics.

As a musician, I look at it the same way as if a band decides to change their style to appeal to a more mainstream audience, leaving behind the people who were there when that mainstream audience didn’t care.

  • kupomogli

When are we getting Prinny 2? Also when is Disgaea going to be ported to the PSX?

  • eliel

and when is absolute hero modding project coming

  • cowcow

Are they responsible for bringing over that Neptune game or is that solely Compile Heart? Cause if so bring that game here

    • http://www.tbstactics.com mjemirzian

Compile Heart is Idea Factory, not NIS.

  • androvsky

How did Sakura Wars do? Any plans for more from the series?

  • BadenBadenPrinny

    Neptune localization plox

  • http://twitter.com/confectionally Loren

When the heck are we getting Pandora Hearts? I’ve been waiting to hear a release date since forever :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Were there any games for either the PS2, PSP, or PS3 that you wanted to bring over, but someone else localized instead?

Also, thanks for supporting Playstation owners the way you have over the years. You keep giving us those exclusives, we’ll do our best to support you.

Oh, and do you know if Aksys has the Agarest license locked, or is it possible for you guys to pick up Agarest 2 and Zero and actually do them right this time.

  • epiphaniesarefun

hmm, way back they had a game in development for the ps3 called makai wars, then it was placed on hold for awhile, so I’m wondering what’s going on with it? Will it ever see daylight?

  • LastFootnote

What are the major factors influencing which games NISA chooses to localize? I’m especially curious about NIS-developed games.

Some of the games they’ve chosen, like Last Rebellion and Viral Survival, baffle me.

  • http://www.tbstactics.com mjemirzian

Will Disgaea 4 have damage numbers so ridiculous they have to be expressed in exponential notation?

Are they raising the level cap to 99999 for even more hundreds of hours of grinding?

  • http://www.facebook.com/HyperKwame Kwame Robinson

Do you guys plan on bringing over Neptune, Classic Dungeon, or Zettai Hero Kaizou Keikaku?

  • CoolChibi

Would you guys ever consider localizing a game from a major company again like with Sakura Wars?

  • http://www.nisamerica.com NickyD

I kind of hate knowing most of these answers already. Because keeping my mouth shut is hard.

    • LastFootnote

      That’s gotta be rough.

You and the rest of the team did a great job localizing Disgaea Infinite, by the way! Thanks for all your work.

      • http://www.nisamerica.com NickyD

Thank you very much! I tried really hard, so I’m happy to hear you found it enjoyable. I hope you’re as satisfied with everything else we put out in the future, too =D

        • http://denpanosekai.blogspot.com denpanosekai

Very good indeed. Still a couple of “your” instead of “you’re” and vice-versa. There were some other typos like “talking” instead of “taking” (your time).

          Nothing game-breaking at least…

          CLASSIC NEPTUNE MODIFICATION TONELICO

          • http://www.nisamerica.com NickyD

Oh no! I hate to give you homework… but can you give me one of the lines in question…? I must see if it’s something the testers missed in QA… or if an old ROM snuck onto shelves somehow…!

            Edit: I just rechecked the script… I… couldn’t find any…? That’s worrisome…

    • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

And can you answe this Nick?
…How many prinnies die after every game NISA translate? thanks >:D

      • http://www.nisamerica.com NickyD

Eh, we don’t even bother counting. They explode left and right, but in the end, they’re Prinnies. About as important as that cheeto I dropped under my desk a few months ago.

        • http://www.siliconera.com Melinda

Hey, we have a Prinny torturer in the building! We have to start a fund to save those Prinnies from needless exploding and invade NISA before it’s too late…… Who am I kidding? Pass me a Prinny, I like my portable, adorable and throwable weapons of mass destruction.(Slightly bored today. Exam preparation sucks and I have a few people I don’t like right now…)

        • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

          XDDD

    • Nekobo

Will you be at the NIS America booth, NickyD? I’m interviewing Jack Niida on Wednesday at the Koei-Temco and it’d be cool to meet you, too. I’m enjoying Disgaea Infinite, so I’d love to give you props for that in person. :)

      • http://www.nisamerica.com NickyD

Yeah, I’ll be there Wednesday and Thursday!

        • Nekobo

Cool! Maybe I’ll you questions, too, if you don’t mind. :)

          • http://www.nisamerica.com NickyD

I do not mind at all!

          • Nekobo

Will you be there all day? It’ll be nice to bump into Spencer, too. :o

          • http://www.nisamerica.com NickyD

Yeah, though I might wander around a bit at some point…

        • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

          See you tomorrow?

          • http://www.nisamerica.com NickyD

            You bet =D

            Looking forward to it!

      • Nekobo

        dp

  • Kuza21

When will finally see the graphical revamp of your iconic titles? (Ex. Disgaea)

  • nyoron

NISA should localize Toradora Portable to go along with their Toradora anime release. I guess that wasn’t really a question… any plans for anime/game tie-ins?

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/VY27XRBU2VMQVWCNPXHMXDR4UE chibi

when will we next see a disgaea where laharl and squad are the main characters again?

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/VY27XRBU2VMQVWCNPXHMXDR4UE chibi

also where can i sign away my newborn for a decent neptune localization?

  • Melty

I would love to know if they plan to bring Neptune to over

  • http://www.siliconera.com Melinda

Curveball time, because I know that no one would know the answer to my question!(I’m being very serious)1. How do you intend to get around the issues that Ar Tonelico 3 presents in terms of gaining a ESRB or even PEGI classification, considering that there is a chance the game could be interpreted as child pornography or otherwise present other legal issues? Will the game be materially altered to gain a rating?2. Can I get it classified by the Australian Classification Board?(NickyD – I bet you don’t know the answers to those ones. :P)

  • Hours

Will you be localizing Princess Antiphona, La Pucelle PSP & Atelier Totori?

  • DarkWaterClone

I want to know what is going on with Makai Wars. In the past NISA has said that if a lot of fans asked their parent company & got a lot of fan support the game might come out. So will Makai Wars come out on the PS3 & PSP?With Disgaea Infinite now out will NISA bring more text adventure games out? When Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love came out NISA brought the game to the Wii. Even though it was never a Wii game. So would NISA bring out Dragon Shadow Spell & Sacred Blaze? But instead of just a PS2 game bring them out on the Wii or PSP?Would NISA ever think about bringing more Sakura Wars games out? What are the chances your PS1 games will come out on PSN like Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure? Is there a chance your Anime will come out on PSN?I want to know if Nippon Ichi’s Software’s own games Hymn Princess of Antiphona, Prinny 2, Zettai Hero Modification Project, Classic Dungeon & La Pucelle: Ragnarok will come out? Last question Namco & Atlus pass on their games. Is there hope NISA can bring out Tales & Growlanser. Plus Devil Summoner too. Would NISA every think about making games of their own?
I would like to ask more but I know if I was the list would be a lot bigger.

    • Ereek

I don’t think it will ever happen, but NISA doing Growlanser would be a dream come true.

  • tbustin79

Question: With crossover games being popular right now and with cross edge released and trinity universe not too far away, I would love to see more crossover games with other companies. Square enix, namco bandai and falcom are a few that come to mind. I think that with a few of these larger companies there would be more exposure and press for the title plus the deeper pockets would allow for a larger budget. Who wouldn’t like to see prinny kick the crap out of sephiroth or team up with him?

  • http://otoboku.se manga

Since I´m very very curious about it and with Disgaea Infinite just released I would ask them if they would see any market in starting to translate the visual novels from Japan that NIS either has been a part of or published in Japan.

The title I would be most interested in is Seinarukana.

Maybe you NickyD can give me an estimated amount of time it would take to translate Seinarukana to English?

Cause I´ve seen the gameplay, I´m enjoying the patch for Eien no Esalia which I think is the previous game in the series and boy. I would so love to have the sequel as well.

Otherwise, I would wonder if Neptune gets localized, Disgaea 4 info, Atelier Totori localized and such.

  • http://www.genkaibreak.com Code

rar, my simple question is Prinny 2, what’s the status on it? My bigger question though is, ever since the original “Prinny: Can I really be the Hero”, it really caught my interest seeing NIS tackle 2D-action particularly it’s great boss battles! So I’ve always been curious, NIS, what’s your thought’s on doing a 2D fighter? You have an absolute huge backlog of characters from Disgaea series and more, are absolute masters of beautiful 2D sprites/artwork, and with fighters really coming back into the limelight it seems like a great opportunity for NIS to reach out! Why hasn’t it happened yet >w<!?

  • http://twitter.com/manasteel88 Mana

What games would you like to localize but know you can’t? This can be due to localization issues, budgeting, age of the game or even lack of audience.

Is the 360 audience a viable demographic for NISA at this stage?

Are you still active in anime licensing post Toradora and how has the response been from those licenses?

What’s usually the hardest part of the localization process?

How responsive was Sega during Sakura Wars localization? We saw many issues with Yakuza 3 getting brought over close to the same time of release.

What is your favorite game? Even gaming exec’s have to unwind with something.

Does Hayarigami have a chance at getting brought over? I know NIS released a series of movies in English for the rest of the world and was wondering if they ever did have a wish to publish it in the N. America.

  • Ereek

NIS Japan and NIS America are different business entities. It’s NIS Japan whose profits were down. NIS America has not announced their profits, but likely will during the July investor show.

  • Ereek

    I’m late!

    - How challenging is it choosing titles? How long does the process take? Other than potential profit, what else do you factor in?

    - It’s well known that NISA isn’t the biggest company out there. How many sacrifices do they have to make when choosing games for localization? Are there any games they would have loved to localize, but didn’t have the time, energy, or resources?

    - Can they elaborate a bit on if they have a relationship with ATLUS? NISA’s Prinny Bomb was advertising P3P and Rosenqueen has sold ATLUS titles before. We’re aware ATLUS acts as their distributor, but is there anything else? Do you communicate with each other when localizing?

  • Devonian

How well did Sakura Wars do, anyway? Enough to warrant trying to bring more over?

  • javierabdo

I also really want nippon ichi games on 360 i already have a ps3 for disgaea 3 but i love my gamertag and want some achievements so my question is the same is there any plan for any nippon ichi title to be port to 360? just be clear i only have interst on the games developed by nippon ichi and not the others that only published.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Juddgment Judgment8

Q:Do you plan on localizing Prinny 2? If so, can you give us a little hint when it’s coming?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brandon-Coley/588322262 Brandon Coley

i ask if there going to release zettai warriors and lu pucelle ragnarok on to the PSP in america
