Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Comments On Glasses-Free 3D

By Spencer . June 21, 2010 . 12:30am

imageSony’s foray into the world of 3D video games is with 3DTVs, glasses, and PlayStation 3 games like Killzone 3. Comparatively, Nintendo has the Nintendo 3DS, a handheld that doesn’t require glasses for holographic 3D effects.

What does Sony have to say about the competition? Without mentioning the Nintendo 3DS specifically, Kaz Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, commented on the technology.

"A portable with naked eye 3D does not have high precision, according to internal research," Hirai said in an interview with Sankei Biz. "Presently, there are limits." This statement was made before Hirai saw the Nintendo 3DS, which was on display, with a two-plus-hour line to see it, at Nintendo’s E3 booth.

Hirai believes the PlayStation 3’s 3DTV compatible software will boost sales of their console. Sony bundled 3D ready versions of Super Stardust HD, Wipeout HD, and a demo of MotorStorm: Pacific Rift to consumers who purchased a Bravia 3DTV this past month.

Well of course there are limits. But guess what, there are limits to the 3D TVs too: namely, the price.

Of course, i think Sony is more interested in stuff that allows for family viewing – you know, with Bluray and all – and the technology behind the 3DS can’t be used for that. Unfortunately, as of today, glasses are the only way to see a movie in 3D for more than one person (meaning cinema and tv).

  • does actual 3DS does not have high precision?

People will prefer to buy a console 3D enabled than a 3000$ 3D,tv,lens at 100$ and a transmitter at 200$ and i forgot to calculate the tax xD…..

Plus with the 3DS you can watch any movie file in 3D,just to adjust the switch, isnt it great? :P

Who care of Sony ‘precision’?With a such great 3DS line-up,i dont care of Sony ‘precision’ personnaly,i just want to play some great games without ruining me >_>

  • So, there are limits to the 3DS, so what…

At least we don’t have to pay a fortune just to play 3d on PS3. lol

“Presently, there are limits.” Here’s Sony’s fallback

  • It’s painfully obvious that @Playstation #SCEA is excessively catering to graphics whores, in this generation alone.

It’s no wonder it got hammered with the meme, “PS3 has NO games”, because of its graphics whoring.
