Square Enix Has A Build Of Final Fantasy XIV In Stereoscopic 3D

imageBahamut firing Mega Flare that blasts out of the screen? It’s possible. Square Enix demoed a build of Final Fantasy XIV in stereoscopic 3D at E3. The technical demo used NVIDIAs 3D vision surround technology for a PC configuration.

What about PlayStation 3s, which also support 3D games? Dengeki Online asked Hiromichi Tanaka, Producer, about it and he replied, “I think it would be quite difficult.”

The PlayStation Blog also interviewed Tanaka and asked how he plans to reach out to console gamers that haven’t experienced MMOs in the past.

“Because Final Fantasy XIV is designed as a cross-platform MMO, there is no difference between the PC version and the PS3  version. We believe that previous attempts to bring MMOs to consoles have been unsuccessful because they focused too much on adapting their style to suit that audience and they lost the feel of a true MMO. Therefore, regardless of the platform, we are aiming to produce a real MMO with Final Fantasy XIV.”

I’ll take that comment as the team has no plans to reach out to the console crowd.

So in the sense of being an MMO, FF11 was a failure? I played it about 30 hours when it first came out and I couldn’t get into it so I personally see it as one. I had people that I knew but not all of them were on whenever I was on. The game was far too difficult to play alone if you didn’t want to party. People also aren’t joking that finding a party regularly took 30 minutes or longer if you were finding someone that wanted to do something that you were also going to do.

Failure wouldn’t be online for 8 (and counting) years.

According to Hiromichi Tanaki it’s a failure.

My cynical side says that the only reason SE is supporting PS3 for FFXIV is so they can answer “PS3 limitations!” whenever questioned on why they won’t make improvements to the game.

Anyone that has played FFXI extensively knows what I’m talking about.

here’s hoping to not hearing that for a looong time…

If this were free to play I would give a crap

Expecting “serious” MMOs (aka ones not perpetually stuck in alpha or beta phases) to be f2p is just silly.
