I Asked Shinji Hashimoto About Final Fantasy V And VI On DS And 3DS

By Spencer . June 24, 2010 . 6:17am

imageIn April, Shinji Hashimoto tweeted about Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI for the Nintendo DS. Neither game was announced by Square Enix, but Hashimoto said the titles had “technical problems”. That piqued my interest and I figured the Siliconera crowd was curious too. So, I asked Hashimoto about the unannounced remakes when I met him at E3.

“As you saw from Nintendo’s press conference yesterday, there is new hardware coming out,” Hashimoto replied. “We knew that was coming. We had to make decisions understanding that there were hardware changes in the near future and where want to put our resources.”

I followed up and asked Hashimoto if Square Enix has plans to bring Final Fantasy V or Final Fantasy VI to the Nintendo 3DS. Hashimoto stopped typing or maybe tweeting on his laptop, laughed, and said, “No decision has been made.”

“Rather than creating [Final Fantasy] V or VI for the current DS we want to take a look to see how 3DS does, how it evolves, and then make a decision.”

I’m literally 3 hours into the GBA version of FFV as its the only FF game I haven’t completed. I waited a few years for this to come out on the DS even though I bought the GBA version day one, and I finally decided to start the GBA version yesterday. Now this news makes me question my decision and I’m confused again. So should I stop playing and wait for a 3DS version?

Just keep playing the GBA version. The GBA version of FFIV was better than the DS version anyway.

Agreed. I highly prefer the GBA version of IV. But I think he’s talking about V!In my opinion, just keep playing the GBA version of V. It’s great as-is.

Right, I know he meant V. I’m just saying that there’s precedent for the DS version not being strictly superior. That and it seems a bit silly to wait for a version that, as far as we know, isn’t being developed at all.

Just play through it anyway. If 3DS versions do come out it won’t be for another year or so at the very least, and FFV is one of the most replayable games in the series. Also, the GBA translation is hilarious.

  • Well, still ambiguous, but this seems more hopeful than the previous answer. I’m still hoping for a VI remake someday…

  • Gimmie ff 5 & 6 with the aibrushed japanese 4&5 cover look and a cel stroked outline ala Dragon Quest 8 and 2 camera’s .. the ff7 on 3d camera swirl look and the old-skool 2d lookin side camera that you toggle between.

They should make a FFVI remake where all the random rumors that used to circulate on message boards are true.Like, there’s some random enemy in the phoenix cave you can steal a ‘ressurrect’ from 1/256 of the time, which can be used on Leo! And there’s a scene that confirms Gogo = Darryl!

  • lets just hope they use the four heroes of light graphics!

      Hell no!
