PlayStation Move Starter Kit Is Cheaper In Japan

Sony Computer Entertainment America’s Starter Kit includes the Wii Sports inspired Sports Champions, a PlayStation Eye, and a Move controller for $99. This bundle arrives in stores on September 19.

PlayStation Move won’t launch in Japan until October 21 and, in a rare move, it will cost less over there. New PlayStation 3 games typically retail for 6,980 yen ($78) to 8,190 yen ($91) in the Land of the Rising Sun. White Knight Chronicles: Awakening of Light and Darkness, for example, is 6,980 ($78).

In Japan, the PlayStation Move Starter Kit is only 5,980 yen ($67). You still get a Motion Controller, PlayStation Eye, and a game for that price. The game is different, however. Japan gets Sing and Draw instead of Sports Champions.

A standalone controller costs less in Japan too. The suggested retail price in North America is $49. An extra motion controller goes for 3,980 yen ($44) in Japan.

‘New PlayStation 3 games typically retail for 6,980 yen ($78) to 8,190 yen ($91)’. That is steep. Having said that I’ve experienced some mad pricing in some European territories e.g. Spain, where new PS3 titles average at around 70 Euros ($86) a pop. Crazy. Things, thankfully, aren’t so bad in the UK (for now).

While they debut that high, and big sellers remain that high, I’ve gotten really good deals on games several weeks later in Japan, so it’s a bit of give and take.

Additionally, the falling value of the dollar has made the prices look more inflated. In 2006 games debuted in the same price range of 6980 – 8190, but in dollars that translated to about $66 – $78, which is only slightly higher than the US.

5,980!? That’s a pretty low risk investment in my book. And if things go as planned, I’ll be in Japan at the end of the year….so I think I’ll be down for that.

Additionally, I’ve never heard of Sing and Draw, but it sounds like the kind of game that girls would be interested in playing with me, so I’m down. That theory is enhanced by the included image for the game being a girl.

    you forgot shipping?

Can I replace the sing and draw with Time Crisis? I so want that game

If…I get to sing addicting J-tunes, then I’m totally importing. It will probably ring up the same as the North American one later with shipping (and sometimes custom) fees.

Eh, okay. If I can find someplace where shipping won’t fill in the entire difference, I’m in.

The guy with the 2 mov controllers held like a bow and arrow reminds me of Hank the Ranger (with his magical bow) from the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon :)
