Rumor: Japanese Retailer Pegs Nintendo 3DS And PSP-4000 For This Year

By Spencer . June 27, 2010 . 11:23pm

Geo deals with all kinds of media in Japan. DVD rentals, CDs, and, of course, video games are on their shelves. In a financial briefing, Geo outlined some of their key products like renting “Alice in Wonderland” on August 4.

In the games category, they listed Gran Turismo 5, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, and an unannounced PSP-4000. The Nintendo 3DS is on Geo’s expected product list too. According to the calendar, GeoNet will stock both products within this year.

Japanese blogs are buzzing about the find, but Geo’s calendar seems off to me. Notice Pokémon Black & White? Geo says those games are slated for October while Nintendo just announced both games for September 18.

    4000?…

So its really going to happen….

  • Eddie

If the psp 4000 is true hopefully we don’t get another new one after this for at least 3 years.

  • DemonicX

    PSP 4000?

    Oh, lawd. >_<

  • NeoTechni

Oh God please be a PSP2 and not another PSP1

  • holyPaladin

Wow PSP 4000 want to know if it’s true

  • malek86

Gran Turismo 5 in September? I find that difficult to believe.

As for the PSP2. My only real gripe with the PSP is the battery life. If they solve this, and put a better analog stick, I’m all for it (but please do not swap it in place of the d-pad).

    • Aoshi00

If you get the extended battery, it would last a lot longer, doesn’t hold the charge as well as the DS though… and not a better analog stick, needs two sticks (Peace Walker would’ve played so much better), is that so much to ask :(..

    • thebanditking

agreed, the PSP is a “candy bar” design and since nothing slides or folds I never understood why it did not have a proper analog stick to begin with (like the Neo-Geo Pocket color). The “nub” has never been my cup of tea, but my excitement for the 3DS was further squashed by finding out it would be using a bigger version of it.

Oh darn, monster hunter until december!?

  • Chow

I was hoping for a PSP-4000 announcement at E3. Hopefully this data sheet is true.

I don’t believe this list. If another PSP were on the way Sony would have revealed it at this E3 earlier this month. This is nothing more that fake list in my humble opinion.

However, after seeing Nintendo reclaim their rightful place as “king of handhelds” at the E3 this year it would not be surprising if Sony did try to scramble and put something out on the shelves as the PSPgo is not helping them in any measure.

As for that list saying that the Nintendo 3DS would be released in 2010 that is quite untrue unless Nintendo of Japan is going to release the Nintendo 3DS first in Japan and than in Western territories as Reggie Fills Amie of Nintendo of America made it clear on the Late Night Show with Jimmie Fallon that the United States will receive the Nintendo 3DS next year.

    • Pichi

If there will be a PSP2, I think Sony didn’t reveal it at E3 because they know the 3DS would overshadow it. TGS or the next E3 will be a better place to debut it without any new hardware competition.

I’m planning to get a DSi this week.Guys please advise me..Should I get it or just wait for 3DS till DECEMBER or the 1st quarter of next year?

    • http://www.facebook.com/AllenSmithee Samuel Smithee Bateman

I’d wait for the 3DS, it is what I’m doing, man.

    • http://ofurotaimu.dreamwidth.org shirokiryuu

Do you already have a regular DS? Because I’d wait if I were you.

    • Tom_Phoenix

At this point, you are better off waiting for the 3DS. You will be able to play all the 3DS titles while still having backwards DS/DSi compatibility. Plus, once the 3DS is released, DS games will probably start dropping in price.

That is what I am doing. For the time being, I bought myself a Game Boy Micro to enjoy some of the excellent GBA titles and I do not regret the purchase in the slightest.

PSP 4000!!! YES! How can they improve the 3000? haha the “go” is a fail, nothing beats 3000. Maybe improved graphics? PSP is my second favourite console I hope this is true :D

    • lostinblue

PSP-2000 is actually better than 3000 in my book.

      • thebanditking

I disagree, personally the 3000′s wider color screen is worth the scanlines that some complain about (I never noticed them). I also prefer the 3000 because it limits the piracy on the system, because there is no excuse for stealing games, also the face buttons and d-pad are more refined from the 2000′s.

        • lostinblue

It’s not just piracy it prevents. I can agree with you, I’m all for countering piracy and stuff and they did what they had to do, but not everyone of us, who uses CFW is doing it to run games they don’t own/paid for; and on that premise alone I just can’t consider the PSP-3000 the superior product.

Why would a PSP 4000 be a new console? Wouldn’t it just be a slight improvement of the last? Shouldn’t it be a PSP2 then? Isn’t the PSP GO a 4000, technically?

    • marc_89

The Go is actually an N1000, meaning that we may still see a N2000 as well as a P4000 or perhaps only the latter.

      • thebanditking

hopefully only the latter, because as much as i love my PSP the Go is an embarrassment. A digital only console/service only works work shovelware junk that the iPhone gets, not legitimate games like the DS/PSP.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nigel-Eustace/100001039098664 Nigel Eustace

what are you talking about??? the go has all the same games as the regular psp!! Wow!!!

          • marc_89

The Go can play all the same games as the regular PSP, but if they’re not made available through a download service such as the PlayStation store, which requires the publishers approval, then you’re out of luck (cough Crisis Core, Lumines, etc cough).

  • kylehyde

Well if the 3DS came this year I think that it will be for time saving.

  • thebanditking

I don’t know about this, unless its a JP only announcement. Sony has plenty of PSP-3000 bundles lined up for the Holiday season so launching a new revision/upgrade would likely limit their sales. I just don’t think we will see a new PSP released before the end of this year.

    • Joanna

Well that is for a Japanese retailer, so you may very well be right and North America may get 4000 next year.

  • http://www.roofmaterials.org Michelle

Is the DSi just a tech demo for the 3DS, or are they going to stay separate?

    • Joanna

I don’t understand your question.3DS is a totally new handheld. How can one be a tech demo for the other?

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/TFGS777QS4JSATU7EVVQE6FZBU yengk

Meh. I don’t see how Sony could possibly mangle the poor PSP any further – everything after 2000 was crap. And if they were implementing any significant hardware upgrades, then they may as well just redirect their funds into building a new console. If they wanted to blatantly milk their console for all its worth, they should have went with Nintendo’s line and made XL/XS/Camera versions or something.

As for the 3DS, I seriously doubt it’d be released so soon. And honestly, I’m hoping it ain’t – give the devs at Nintendo time to iron out the kinks in it and deliver a quality product.
