Sega Saturn Ports Aren’t Out Of The Question

By Spencer . June 30, 2010 . 11:39am

imageSega’s back catalog of Genesis, Dreamcast, and even Master System games will be sold as digital downloads for current consoles. What about the Saturn?

“When it comes to the whole world, Genesis and Dreamcast are famous, Saturn is unknown,” Yosuke Okunari said to Impress Watch. Earlier, Okunari pointed out downloadable games are more popular overseas than Japan.

That doesn’t mean Sega is ignoring the Saturn. They published a handful of Saturn ports with extras on the PlayStation 2 under the Sega Ages label. “In addition, we are thinking about ports of Saturn titles. It’s the same as how Sega Ages and Virtual Console were existed separately. It’s not that we have no plans of Saturn ports, please share your requests,” Okunari added.

    Dear Sega,
I request that you not be SO F%#$ING STUPID, AND GIVE US OUR F%#$ING SEGA CD AND SATURN GAMES YOU F%#$ING IMPOTENT EXCUSE FOR A DEAD HARDWARE MANUFACTURER!!!
    Warmest regards,
    Kunio

That’s a bit much. They’re not stupid, they just know that the games would likely be difficult to port/recreate due to the Saturn and Sega Cd being hard to program for, and that there’s likely not going to be much of a payoff in doing it, since so many of the games are rather obscure.

I’d like like it, you’d like it, and so would much of the Siliconera-type, but overall I think it’d be largely ignored…

Oh please PLEASE let there be a port of Panzer Dragoon Saga!!

    • Serge73

I’d like that too, but about a year or so ago there was a retrospective article on the game where they interviewed some people involved in making it, and they claimed that some of the source code was missing, making a port kind of unlikely… u_u

      • lostinblue

It’s been known for years that the source code was missing. And I don’t think it was some, I think it was all of it.

  • kupomogli

Sega Saturn Collection? I’d rather pay for a collection with a physical disc than a bunch of DLC only ports.

    • thebanditking

My thoughts exactly. I just prefer physical media, I have a big enough HDD (320GB) but I find my self limiting what I buy when it comes to DLC. Mainly because I know I don’t own it and that should my HDD crash down the line I will be SOL.

    • lostinblue

I rather pay for a physical disc for each game or series to be honest. I dislike stuff that doesn’t seem to be sorted whatsoever.

Sega Ages 2500 series did it right, with stuff like “Phantasy Star Complete Collection” in one disc, or even the NiGHTS into Dreams remake (not labeled as Sega Ages 2500, but still, it bundled both NiGHTS into Dreams and Christmas Nights plus extras)

    XBLA / PSN Panzer Dragoon (and Zwei) please. ;o;

  • thebanditking

    Panzer Dragoon Series
    ClockWork Knight
    NiGHTS
    Virtua Fighter 2
    Shining the Holy Ark
Shining 3 (all three parts this time :( )
    Burning Rangers
    Virtua Cop (with move support)

XBLA/PSN port of Fighters Megamix! Please! Sega, make it happen!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/charliesabers Carlos Escalante

Would love some Saturn Ports….SEGA has been slow on capitalizing on this.

I’d love to play the Panzer Dragon Series, Nights, Shining Force, Figther’s Megamix….there’s some interesting 3rd party games too, but those are harder to do I guess.

  • BrotherCavil

    Skies of Arcadia? Via PSN?

Hell to the yes, doubled with a hell yeah.

    • kupomogli

Skies of Arcadia is on Dreamcast, not Saturn. It’s been ported over to Gamecube though if you have either a Gamecube or a Wii.

Maybe you’re accidently replying to the wrong news post.

      • BrotherCavil

Oh no, I already have Skies of Arcadia Legends.

It’s just that Spencer’s first sentence of the post got me all geared up. …Again.

What? No mentions of Sakura Taisen? I’m ashamed of you guys, because you didn’t mention #SakuraTaisen.

Heck, #SakuraTaisen is the HOLY GRAIL of ALL Saturn games that Bernie Stolar deprived us.

I see of this as a “Now or Never” moment for us overseas Sakura Taisen fans.

    • Slashlen

Hey now, I just saw this article! :)

Here’s one vote for Sakura Taisen ports!

      • lostinblue

Why port those when the Sakura Taisen games who graced the console were already ported and enhanced for both PS2 and PSP though?

I doubt that’s Sega intent, they seem to be fine licencing it to third party’s but they obviously don’t want to have the hassle to translate such game, specially for a relatively small virtual release.

        • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

Specifically about Sakura Taisen, SCEA is following Bernie Stolar’s will by NOT allowing the release of Sakura Taisen 1 & 2 PSP in America.

Heck, if anything, XBLA and Virtual Console deserve them more than SCEA does… in America.

        • Moriken

Sakura Taisen 1-4 are also on the PC…!

Shining Force III (2-3) was another of those games that was good but never came over xD

I’d like an English Policenauts… thank you.

    • Aoshi00

Yeah, Policenauts would be great (I got it on the Jpn PSN for 600 yen though), it’s like Kojima’s City Hunter :)

Sengoku Blade shmup for Saturn! Better yet a remake..

      • http://photovoltaik.bandcamp.com/ Ujn Hunter

Yeah. I have the original Saturn Policenauts… I just don’t understand it. ;) I know there is an English patch for the Playstation version… but from what I understand the Saturn version is the definitive unedited version.

I’ve never played Sengoku Blade… but after seeing some screenshots it looks interesting! I’m tempted to buy the Saturn disc… but it’s more expensive than a new game! I’ll stick it on my list… thanks!

        • Aoshi00

Yea, it would be very cool if they finally translate it to English, such a gem from Kojima. I played it on the PSP when I got it from PSN, I wonder how much more contents were in the Saturn ver. I think you could use the lightgun during the shooting parts right? I got Sengoku Blade used from ebay for around $50, it’s a pretty fun horizontal shmup, I just don’t feel like hooking up the Saturn, so I hope it ends up on XBLA or PSN eventually w/ updated graphics. I really like the art too, the sexy Koyori was a very popular character :)

  • countupyoursins

    Panzer Dragoon games, please!

    • Moriken

Accompanied by NEW Panzer Dragoon games, please!
(another Panzer Dragoon Saga-type game would be so cool *.*)

  • puchinri

NiGHTS into Dreams for one. The Puyo Puyo games would be nice.
Shining Force III wouldn’t be bad to have.
And I know it’s not for Saturn… but getting a translated port of Napple Tale would be nice.

  • capristrider

Sega Saturn! Yes I love to relive/replay Saturn games(Panzar Dragoon Saga, Die Hard Arcade), even play games I missed out on (Policenauts) and games I heard/read about a lot (Shining games, Sakura Taisen – I know, hang head in shame)

I love it when Sega mentioned that Saturns games being considered and forums on the net light up and the sacred Panzer Dragon Saga name come up again.
Source code missing/lost/whatever, Sega needs to hear the fans request!

It was the Saturn that introduced me to “game importing” from Japan. I still regret selling my modded Saturn (60/50 hertz switch) and mint copies of various jap Capcom games like Vampire Saviour and Radient Silvergun!
