The Last Story Has Chatty Companions

By Spencer . July 2, 2010 . 5:19am

The Last Story Has Chatty CompanionsNintendo updated The Last Story site with new art showing the male and female leads surrounded by comrades.

That’s the title of the post where the game’s unnamed producer says, “players are surrounded by conversation from comrades.” Characters talk while moving and during battle. “Often, conversations on the move are trivial. Drama exists in the middle of battle,” the director writes. In battles, allies talk at set intervals and during techniques.

While players may ignore these conversations at first, these are designed to flesh out each character’s personality and their relationships with each other.

Even when playing alone, the producer wants you to feel the “warmth of beings surrounded by companions”.

Oh cool, but the bad part is that when they add those kind of stuff i always miss them because im too focused fighting or running checking everyting, etc xD, still is fun.

But so far, the best way to understand and get along better with a game’s character, in my opinion, is the way tales of games series do, with skits, they are just perfect, with monologues for one character… or between the party…, i wish other games could use a system like this as well, even if they are “copying” this part of the tales of system, is no shame to use great ideas as base, to maybe create even something even better.

I dunno… characters talking almost all the time seems kind of fun. I’m definitely getting this game if it gets localized just for that.

Well, just like the last FF, the characters talk from time to time while playing, but it never was that worked up, it seems it will be here, i still prefer the tales of skits though

Super Mario RPG also did it very well, the text messages on top would sometimes crack me up in the middle of a boss.

I thought the way the characters talk on the journey in FFXIII was kind of boring (the lines were very sparse anyway), I love how it was handled in Nier though, the characters’ personalities were really fleshed out, they were always arguing and poking fun at each other :)Emil: “I like to camp out w/ Kaine, we have so much fun”Kaine: “Come on Emil, I have a f’ing image to maintain”

I was never a tales fan, but I don’t like constantly being stopped on the road and just listen to the dialogue, seems kind of off balance to me, even though the conversation is interesting.

I actually liked the characters talking in FF. The lines were sparse indeed, but at least they said something. I also liked that they moved of their own accord at times. It made them more then silent puppets that follow you around.

As for Tales of… well you can ignore the skits if you want. I like them though, many of them are hilarious too.

I didn’t dislike the talking in FFXIII, I meant they didn’t have nearly enough of those. I thought Nier did a much better job in actually using the conversation to flesh out the characters’ personalities, as you could really learn a lot about them, and the dialogue always make you laugh. I don’t want to skip anything either because I don’t want to miss out the details. I just meant by pressing a button prompt, stopping in the middle of the field, listen to the conversation, and then go on, repeat, feels like disrupting the flow. Like in Nier, when he was killing goats and sheeps, Grimoire Weiss and Nier would bicker about killing sheeps and taking on chores in the middle of the action, or in the middle of fishing, Nier would tell Weiss to shush and not to scare the fish away, it felt very natural and humorous as well. But yea, when they were riding the chocobos in Gran Pulse, depending on who you use as the leader, they say different things which are pretty funny, also when they were pulling the levers on the elevator, just the little grunts and such.. XIII never went very deep w/ the chars though unfortunately (the Episode Zero novel was an expansion of that).

Lol, its not really constantly though, im always happily waiting for some skits to appear, specially after some events to see whats the characters point of view of what happened, i even think there should be more xD

          • Aoshi00

I understand what you mean.. Nier does that too, after beating a boss, the characters would discuss among themselves what they think after an event, so you learn more about the story and the characters. But a stationary screen w/ talking heads w/in a square doesn’t feel as natural compared to just people talking when they are following you on the field.. I like the small chit chats though, it’s part of the script and insightful, fun to listen to, after all, it’s the small things that are the most memorable.

The music piece on the title page of the official site is wonderful… the other stuff sounds crap.

Reminds me of Star Ocean, a little.

The character design is gorgeous, I can’t wait to play this game! Pls come out this year.

    • http://several-hours-into-the-game.blogspot.com/ Nika

Yes, about the character design… *stares at picture*
Is the main character wearing a skin-tight shirt or is that a lace piercing? Either way I find it somewhat disturbing xD

      • Aoshi00

I didn’t pay much attention to the clothes, I just like the art style because I liked Drakengard.

        • http://several-hours-into-the-game.blogspot.com/ Nika

Haha, I like the style as well. It is just that hat particular point struck me as…. odd xD

  • jj984jj

So like SO’s Private Action and Xenoblade’s Kizuna Talk?

    • Aoshi00

But those are more like cutscenes though.. I think it’s more like Nier or FFXIII where people just talk naturally along the way, instead of needing to fulfill certain requirement in order for special scenes to happen which are missible. I like the conversation to flow more naturally instead of needing to stop like the skits in Tales.
