Vanquish Visuals Inspired By Casshern

Vanquish, the third person shooter from Shinji Mikami and Platinum Games, has sci-fi super suits and a space station that feels like a metropolis. While Mikami feels Vanquish has Western style, he was originally inspired by Casshern.

“I do think the visuals lean more towards a Western style, but the original inspiration was from Casshern, a Japanese animated show, and a lot of the game’s taste comes from that,” Mikami said to Gamasutra in an interview. I see some similarities between the main character design, but I’d say Vanquish looks more like the 2004 live action movie.

The Gamasutra interview delves into other neat details including why Mikami chose a third person perspective and cut quick time events.

  • I can see that. I love Casshan/Casshern, so that makes me happy.

I still have to see the 90s OVA, and I refuse to finish Sins on account of major dissapointment.

    Oh well.

    Flawed, but lovable.

You should watch Sins though, I loved Yamauchi Shigeyasu’s beautiful art direction and Furuya Tohru voicing Casshern, both are veterans, it has a Saint Seiya-esque element to it, very retro-ish.

Yeah I thought Sins was badass.

I knew it! I’m so glad that he got inspired by such awesomeness.

    Mikami + Awesomeness = ossim.

    • Aoshi00

So that’s where that kick came from, ossim indeed :)

  • I hope this isn’t under my mom’s facebook account but I want to add something to my comment:I don’t get why people are calling this generic by any stretch of the word. People don’t seem to get, from an outsiders view, all genres look mostly generic to each other.Shmups, I love them, but my brother will see it and he’ll say “Looks just like Raiden” but I’ll be playing it or watching a vid and it is totally different from Raiden! Same with shooters, I can spot the difference in plenty of them, since I like shooters, just like with brawlers (except Dynasty Warriors, those all look the same to me), and fighting games all look very different for me, but to some people they’ll just say “Street Fighter II?”

That makes sense after seeing the gameplay in motion. It still shots I thought everything looked pretty western, but in motion I thought of stuff like casshern.

I think this game will be bad ass.
